Midwest Book Review - engaging story, well told
North of Nowhere is a coming of age story with a twist. What distinguishes it from others of its type is the author's ability as writer. William Reid is a VERY good writer who tells a story in engaging style.

Darren Freeman is 17 years old and heading down a destructive path. The product of an upper middle class family, Darren is a "pot head" who doesn't seem to give a damn about anything but smoking dope and defying or embarrassing his social climbing parents.

Carrie Spears is main "caretaker" of irresponsible, alcoholic parents. At 17, all she can remember is cleaning up vomit and the messes created by the adults in her world. Life has not been pretty or easy for Carrie, and she trusts no one but herself. Life at home and on the streets has hardened her to everything and everyone.

As a last ditch effort to change their outlooks, Darren and Carrie's parents send them to the Grizzly Bear Adventure Outings in the Alaskan wilderness. Camp Counselor Gary Cornwall is a military wannabe who uses shock tactics as a means of bringing rebellious teenagers to heel. He is not a man Darren and Carrie find easy to like or respect, and Cornwall soon finds he's bitten off more than he can chew with these two strong-willed teens. When Darren and Carrie escape the camp and strike out on their own, Cornwall fails to track them down and they are left on their own to survive the Alaskan wilderness.

The tale this author spins is an exciting one, about two fearless teens who work together as a team to survive and finally thrive as human beings. Their respect for each other's strengths and weaknesses is touching and uplifting. Whatever nature throws at them - bears and freezing blizzards, near mortal wounds or icy rivers - these two young people take in stride and face together. Love blooms, but is mutually put on hold because survival is their foremost common goal. From Alaskan natives who befriend them, they discover universal truths that give their lives fuller meaning:
1. Alaska and the world have become a zoo the white man left by accident.
2. The killing of animals is not glorious but a necessity to feed humans. It leaves the hunter sad and shaken.

How Darren and Carrie come to a richer understanding of themselves and the world over time is the beauty of this story. I highly recommend it to all ages.

A good study text for those who work with or on tugs
This book provides new or experienced pilots, tugmen, or masters (or sailors aspiring to those positions) a concise and well authored manual on the use of tugs. Ample illustrations help clarify points brought up in the reading. The end of chapter questions bring together the key points which were covered in the text and can be used to ensure comprehension of important material.

I am sure this book will find a place in many seabags over the years!

Virginian Railway

Best RR History
The Virginian Railway is an excellent introduction to the VGN, or to anyone interested in how a railroad starts up and operates. In addition to the text, it gives timetables, a chronological history with details, a complete loco roster with specifications, and a b&w photo section. More than facts and figures (there are plenty), Mr. Reid gives the human side of this relatively small company. Several officers and employees are introduced to the reader and there are many interesting or humorous stories from the line. Also good overview of the history of the Virginian's area of southern West Virginia and southern Virginia. It is a classic railroad text and I don't think that it could be any better.

The Family of Black America
This book had very detailed pictures. Just by looking at the pictures you could feel them. The pictures are just unspoken for. It goes right along with any other black family. NOT that i'm not already proud of my color but see these pictures really make me proud to be black. I like to thank the authors for the idea of this book. The pictures could't be more real.

A great overview of towing and light salvage.
I am a tugboat operators working out of New York harbor, and I am trying to read as many books about the maritime industery as posible. I one day hope to own a company of my own, and books such as this one are a great help. This book shows you that you don't need a million dollars to start out in the maritime tug and salvage trade, as well as having a great list of equipment suppliers in the last chapter. I read this book in one sitting and I think I learned a lot.

Rewarding. Provides thought-provoking information.
Architects of the Web helps you make sense of the big-picture changes wrought by the Web. Reid is a great story teller. His work gives you in-depth interviews that take you behind the scenes to learn how a few early Web innovators pioneered through this domain. This book will intrigue new comers on the Net while true Netizens may find the information dated

MUST READ -- Great industry insight and storytelling!
I would highly recommend Architects of the Web for anyone that is interested in the Internet phenomenon and it's increasingly monumental impact on modern business and society. The author successfully combines a keen industry insider's view with cogent business insight and compelling storytelling. While framed as the stories of the people that made the commercial Web happen, the book provides a fascinating history of how the Web developed into the medium we know today, as well as ample vision for where it's going. With it's combination of personality, anthropology, storytelling, and insight -- Architects is a "must read" for anyone that surfs!

Facts, intrigue, inspiration

A great story - even better since its true. Perfect for students, entrepreneurs and web surfers.

Other books that come along later will be jaded by knowing too much. Only this book can tell it how it happened, since it was written at the same time; giving the reader a real-time perspective, not revisionist.

Reid gives his book the same kind of drive and intensity that the early web architects must have had!
