it's a great read about one of the best players in baseball.
High 5 is a good book that explains all about one of the most exciting players in baseball today. Through text and pictures it gives a complete story on who Nomar is and why he plays the game he loves so much.

Nomar is Awesome!
Nomar is awesome. I'm a HUGE fan and when I got this book I didn't think I'd be learning too much more than I already knew, but I did. This is a great fact book and I'm looking forward to many more Nomar books. GO SOX!

best player today
This book gives an interesting look into Nomar Garciaparra. From his superstitions to his quick rise up through the Boston organization. Nomar is on \e of the best players today, and also one of the most humble who is quick to praise his teammates before himself. He truely plays for the love of the game.

Curt Schilling in the Hot Seat
Curt Schilling is a GREAT PITCHER. It is nice to see that he is also such a giving person. I did not realize he donates money each game to the Lou Gehrig's Foundation. I would like to be a pitcher someday too, and follow in his footsteps.

Clinton Miller age:8

Very impressive reading!
Some times the size of a book is deceiving, case in point Curt Schilling: Phillie Phire. Eighty-two pages give a world of information on one of today's premier pitchers in major league baseball.

Take a trip with Paul Hagan as he explores the life and baseball time of Curt Schilling, from the years in Alaska to Class A ball in Greensboro, North Carolina to his near career ending shoulder injury.

What we read in the papers and hear in the news about Curt Schilling can't even begin to scratch the surface what this book to the readers. This book in number 17 in the baseball superstar collection.

, here's a perfect gift for young ballplayer in your life. I was also amazed to find out how much time and effort Curt has spent working for a cure for ALS.

Underwhelming
Picking up the autobiography of legendary baseball announcer Jack Buck, you'd think you're in for a light summer read full of good-natured homilies, humorous anecdotes, and "I was there" accounts of great games and players. That doesn't set the bar very high but would make for a good baseball book. "That's A Winner" doesn't deliver on even these modest expectations. First, Buck himself doesn't come across as a very likeable guy. Free with his back-handed criticisms, judgmental of others, once slamming the door in the face of a desperate pregnant woman, and generally keeping his head down as the inveterate corporate guy trying to keep his job. Second, he doesn't really have much to offer. Less than half the book is about baseball, so the reader has to wade through chapters on Buck's youth aboard a boat, in World War II, going to school, reciting names of family and friends as though reading a phone book. There are futile discussions of Castro and the death penalty and Vietnam, issues to which Buck brings no insight and that merely serve to distract the reader looking for some sports. Third, when the baseball finally comes, it's feeble and fleeting. A few thoughts on drugs use in the late 1970s, praise for Whitey Herzog and Ozzie Smith, and that's about it. For a guy who's been around some of the greatest players in the history of the game and become famous for his steady deep-voiced announcing, Buck has written a book that manages to suck the life out of the games and players. No stories, no funny anecdotes, nothing to interest a fan. If you're researching Buck's life and need to know about his military service, this is the book for you. If you want to pass a weekend with a good baseball book, pick up Roger Angell instead.

The voice of St. Louis
What an inspiration Jack Buck is to all of St. Louis. Wouldn't we all like to be remembered as a truly happy person, just a nice guy? That is who and what Jack Buck was. We are richer for having known him in our lives, and thankful he shared this essay with all of us. Jack Buck loved St. Louis, but that love is returned 100 fold to Jack Buck. He's a winner!

Jack Buck--Hall of Famer
If you want to read about the St. Louis Cardinals any book written by either Jack Buck or Bob Broeg is sure to provide you with solid reporting. Buck has been announcing for the Cardinals since the mid-1950's and spent many of those years with another hall-of-famer named Harry Caray. Jack provides the reader with insights into his army career prior to entering baseball, his many years as an announcer for KMOX radio in St. Louis, and those glorious years with the Cardinals of the 1960's and 1980's. He also provides us with his opinions on the changes that have taken place in both baseball and the world from what it used to be. You don't have to be a Cardinals' fan to enjoy this book. If you enjoy baseball history, reading a book written by the much-respected Jack Buck is an enviable treat.

Good Book, Two Much McGwire
Mark McGwire was the contemporary Cardinal everyone loves. But he is a small blip on the wonderful sports history that is the Cardinals. If McGwire is worth 11 pages, Musial, Gibson, Medwick, Dean and Hornsby are worth hundreds.

More needed to be said of Curt Flood and the ground-breaking efforts to free players from the reserve clause. As it is, Flood receives barely a mention. Dizzy Dean is a far more prominent figure in Cardinal history than the book suggests.

What I suspect has happened is that the book relies on the vivid warmth of color photography to capture the reader's imagination -- completely overlooking the artistic beauty of much of the black and white photography of earlier eras. While the book is interesting, it is far from the definitive history of the Cardinals.

It also is too bad that the publishers decided to focus on one unfortunate brawl between the Cardinals and Cubs or McGwire/Sosa as the penultimate moment in this rivalry. There's so much more here too!

A must have for Cards fans
A great book full of photographs stories from the history of the team. It contains pictures and short descriptions of the different stadiums the team has called home, the 10 greatest moments, the 10 greatest performances, of all the WS the team has played in so far and much more.

A special book for Cardinals fans
Unlike most other baseball biographies, A Special Season focuses for the most part on everyday players, instead of super-stars. The majority of entries in the journal-style collection are from the team's thoughtful and intelligent Gold Glove catcher, Mike Matheny, often described as the team's spiritual leader. Pitching ace Matt Morris also has several segments, along with Fernando Vina, Kerry Robinson, Jason Isringhausen, Andy Benes and Miguel Cairo. Going beyond the cliched responses heard in most post-game interviews, the observations of the Cardinals players give fans an inside look at how players made it through the long, trying season. Although some entries deal with the tragedies the team endured in 2002, they don't dwell on them constantly. Starting with Opening Day and going through the last game of the National League Championship Series, the "diary" gives fans a look at the inner thoughts of the players. I would have liked a longer book, with commentary from more players and from coaches, but the chosen excerpts from these players were all insightful and interesting. Accompanied by a few black and white photographs with scrapbook-like captions and a list of results of every game of the 2002 season, paragraph-long biographies of the final 25 man roster, and team statistics, the book makes a nice keepsake for Cardinals fans who also endured that special and difficult season. Suitable for baseball fans of any age, the book is absolutely G-rated.

Saving the rainforest
Grady is a very smart kid and because of it he is asked to spend a couple of weeks with a famous botanist. They are planing to save the forest with special trees. Grady discovers away to speak with the trees with different sounds. He finds out that the trees aren't helping the environment, they're killing it. When people figure out what grady is doing, he runs away. He camps with some indians. Grady teams up with the indians to try to save the rainforest. Can they do it, or will they fail?

GREEN THUMB!!!
2-time national science fair winner, 13 year-old Grady Jacobs is kind of a nerd in school because he is "smart," but doesn't seem to care too much about it. He is going to spend the summer with a famous botanist, Dr. Phillip Carter, in the Amazon rain forest. They have to try to save the rain forest with some new type of "super tree," before it dies out. His job is mostly to cook, but he discovers something amazing, a system of sounds that lets him to control the trees, kind of like a language. He then discovers that Carters "super trees" aren't helping the Amazon, they're hurting it. Hurting it to the point where they're killing it. When some one finds out about what Grady is doing, and the experiments he is taking, he runs away from Carter's camp, and camps with the Urah-wau Indian tribe. Can he stop Carter from using his "super trees" in the rainforest?

Environmental fiction mixed with Sci-fi
This book is a new twist from Rob Thomas, who dabbles in the sci-fi aspect. The story is straight forward...and continues the running themes of "fitting in" and not being singled out for teenagers. Grady uses his mind and is a very pro-active character willing to do what is needed to be done, and Grady's subtle humor will appeal to most of Thomas's fans. Grady is a wonderful character and I was very glad to get to know him...despite the "childish" cover it is worth your time and effort, especially for the visual descriptions of the rainforest.

This is a book you want to read over and over.
This book tells you what a man Mark Mcgwire is and also tells you about his past.

good book, but a few pages short of the record
This book is a great history of McGwires baseball career, but I think in the interest to speed up the production of this book it end too quickly. By the time it is published the record was broken but it's not in the book. Nice to read about what leads up to the record however. All baseball players should read this to see the kind of man a professional should be. McGwire is a true roll modle not just a " Home Run Hero"

GREAT player, great biography -HIGHLY RECOMENDED
I have never actually finished a book over 100 pages EXCEPT for this one. That has to say something. Not only that i LOVE Mark McGwire and almost everything he does but that the author, Rob Rains must know what hes talking about. It is a pretty well detailed book the chapters could be a little shorter but otherwise a very interesting book!
