A must read for any serious handicapper
If you are serious about horseracing and want to beat the public, this is the book for you. Tom Brohamer introduction to the reader of Dr. Howard Sartin's methodology on pace handicapping will change the way you look at horse racing forever. After reading this book you may want to find out more about Sartin methodology, and eventually obtain an easy to use computer program to make your handicapping job much easier and more effective. I hit a $2400 trifecta using this method last month.

Does "Pace make the race"?
Whether you subscribe to one handicapping theory or many, Tom Brohemer's explanation of modern pace handicapping is the best I've read.

Brohamer clearly and succintly outlines his tenents of pace handicapping and makes it easy to convert running times into meaningful handicapping information. He uses charts from actual races to illustrate his theories. The book is easy to follow and understand for semi-experienced handicapper, but takes a bit of practice to convert 1st and 2nd call fractions into pace numbers. The book covers modern tenents of pace handicapping, including running style, class drops, energy distribution. Even if you chose not to do the arithmetic, Brohamer's explanation of pace will increase your profit.

Pace handicapping is very important in horse racing
This book tells you how important pace handicapping is in horse racing. According to this book, pace handicapping is particularly important and accurate in 5 and 6 furlongs races.

I am a serious horseplayer in Hong Kong. This book is of course talking about horse racing in the United States in which dirt racing is the main stream of racing. However, I still find this book useful for horse racing in Hong Kong in which turf racing is the main stream of racing. I also find pace handicapping important and useful even in route races and races of longer distance in Hong Kong (i.e. over 6 furlongs). This may be because of the fact that the quality and power of each horse in each race are very tight in Hong Kong and hence pace plays an important part in a race.

This book also tells you a scientific (mathematical) way of pace handicapping by assigning a score to each horse. This method is new and adds value to me. I highly recommend this book.

Quinn is the man
To win at the races you need to eliminate the losers. This book gives the serious handicapper the tools to choose the horses that are really in contention for todays race. With the help of this book and some reasonable handicapping skills, one can see a difference at the betting windows. The only criticsm is that there is not any great insight on money management, which was not the purpose of this book but would have been a nice bonus.

must have!!
A great book that fully explains class differentials and what horses to look for to win certain classes...Must read for any player

Quinn is the MAN!!
This was truly an eye opener for me, a casual Thoroughbred bettor. James Quinn has positively showed me the light! This book is an up to date, complete analysis of modern formulas to understand how eligible horses qualify for certain races and how to spot the probable winner. 100 stars!!!!

Details about the Middlefork handbook
This book is detailed (sometimes too much) but overall a timeless guide to the Middlefork. Descriptions and places to visit are still true to the book.

A great book to read when running the Middlefork.

Managing Professional Intellect: Making the Most of the Best

How to manage knowledge within knowledge organizations
James Brian Quinn is Professor of Management, Emeritus; Philip Anderson is an Associate Professor of Business Administration; and Sydney Finkelstein is an Associate Professor of Business Administration at the Amos Tuck School of Business. This Harvard Business Review article was published in March-April 1996.

In the modern knowledge-economy, the capacity to manage human intellect - and to convert it into a useful products and services - is essential. But according to the authors little attention has been given to managing professional intellect. So what is professional intellect? The professional intellect of an organization operates on four levels: cognitive knowledge (know-what); advanced skills (know-how); systems understanding (know-why); and self-motivated creativity (care-why). Intellect resies in the brains of professionals, but the authors argue that the first three levels can also exist in the organization's systems, databases, or operating technologies. The authors then continue to describe how to develop and leverage professional intellect, whereby they mostly use management consulting firms as examples. They then turn to the change from traditional hierarchical organizations to invert organizations (where field experts are control), and spider's webs (where specialists team up to solve specific challenges). The type of forms used within each organization depends on the type of purpose, where each form requires specific cultural norms supported by software and tailored performance-measurement and reward systems.

This article discusses an important issue in the modern knowledge economy. They introduce an useful definition of professional intellect, but I believe that the solutions for developing and leveraging this intellect are somewhat too simple. I also believe that the authors put too much emphasis on the use of information systems, which sounds too much like a salesprogram from management consulting firms. Still, an interesting article. The authors use business US-English.

Readings in the Strategy Process

Great Nuggets of Information--Just Hard to Get To
Mintzberg is a brilliant strategist, and due to the extensive knowledge, it is hard at times to get to point of the concept. In some cases, the information is provided in almost elementary style, which is not bad, but most of the writings are very hard to digest. I did learn a great deal from this book, but I admit, I will have to reengage it again to get the full benefit.

Solid reading, but hard work
Don't expect a textbook on how to develop strategy (although, expect a similar result). Well thought-out and structured set of readings that provide insight into the process of developing strategy, from SWOT and Rumelt analysis (Conistency, Consonance, Feasibility, Advantage) through organizational structure and Entrepeneurship.

However, I found the readings extremely hard work to read. It may be inexperience, but (especially in the early chapters), the readings simply take a LONG time to do (and I'm not a slow reader). A nice addition might be a more comprehensive summary of the readings at the start or end of each chapter.

Overall, I go with a 3-star, mainly because of the reading difficulty more than the actual content.

Great book for a business student
Great book and "great" price

Depicts the events, does not not explain why things happened
Having just visited Loreto BCS where the very first mission was erected, I read this book in hope of gaining further historical insights about the colonilzation of Baja California. I was hoping it would tell me why missions were built where they were built, what mission life was like, and how if affected the native population.

This book instead is merely a narrative of the events that took place.

Some historical facts about funding and support from the Spanish government is included.

Good reading but I was left unsatisfied.
