An incredible adventure story that actually happened!
This book is extremely well written. It's filled with wit, adventure, and courageous characters. It's about a teen-age prince who goes on an incredible journey from a prison in Dublin where he was being held, to his home in Donegal, to save his province from Engish envaders.Set in a time of war and hatred, this book is so action-packed it's hard to believe it's a true story!

Exciting and inspiring story from Ireland's history.
Red Hugh Roe O'Donnell, with the help of the MacSweeny, O'Neill and O'Toole clans fights for the freedom of Ireland in the late 1500s. This true episode (one of the greatest in Irish history) is recounted with verve and wit. Even though billed as a "young adult" book, I believe everyone will enjoy this exciting and inspiring tale. If you are looking for a way to interest anyone (young or old) in European history, give them this book -- I guarantee it will whet their appetites. Excellent all around!

Funny and full of nonsense
I'll never forget receiving this nonsense book written by Prince Charles. I read it and read it and had it read to me over and over again. It still has a spot on my formal bookcase in the living room.

Perfect appetizer for a Highland visit
One of the things I love about traveling is getting a good sense of the history of a place I'm visiting. I bought "Flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie" in anticipation of a trip to Scotland, and it was perfect for that purpose. Although it provides an excellent history, it seems designed for the visitor; it's equal parts travel and history.

This book gives a day-by-day description of the Prince's 5 months in hiding from the British before he was able to escape to France. He trekked hundreds of miles on foot, in disguise (once, famously, as a ladies' maid!), sometimes passing within earshot of the soldiers hunting him. The book is liberally illustrated with modern photographs of the particular glens and mountains Charlie passed by, as well as reproductions of painted portraits, etc. of the main participants.

Even better, each part of Charlie's escape is accompanied by a detailed map showing where he was on almost a night-by-night basis. In the appendix there are even driving directions and a list of relevant places for tourists to visit.

If you don't know the story behind Charlie's daring escape, you could not start at a better place.

All the information you need, in an attractive package
The authors manage to tell the story of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's flight from the disaster that was the Battle of Culloden in vivid detail without including so much detail as to become tedious. Coupled with the inclusion of wonderful photography and maps, this book leaves the reader with a full grasp of what the pleasant Prince and his various protectors, guides and benefactors went through during his fve months as a fugitive in the Scottish countryside.

The authors also gave great detail, without undue romanticism, of young Flora MacDonald's role in the Princes escape.

Murder in the Middle Ages
Fans who have exhausted the chronicles of Ellis Peter's Brother Cadfael but but are hungry for more medieval murder, mystery and mahem should do themselves a favor and pick up a copy P.C. Dogherty's The Prince of Darkness.

Based on the legendary conflict between England's King Edward and his profligate son Philip, The Prince of Darkness sweeps you back to the 1300's where royal mistresses languish imprisoned in convents; royal clerks are royal spies, benign substances turn deadly, and political, sexual and religious intrigue lurks around every treacherous, torch-lit corner.

When The Prince of Wales' rejected, convent-bound mistress is found dead at the bottom of the priory stairs, Lady Amelia is ready to write it off as an accident. King Edward, however, has other ideas; and when dark rumors start to spread, hinting that either the Prince of Wales' new, male lover, the Warlock Gaveston-or even the Prince himself, may have murdered Lady Eleanor, he despatches his most trusted clerk, Hugh Courbett to uncover the truth.

What transpires is a wild ride through an age of poisoners, hell-hounds, sinister assassins and dissolute nobility. As the body count mounts, Courbett discovers that there is far more than an Anglo/French alliance resting on the outcome of his increasingly hazardous investigation.

P.C. Douherty has a clear, expedient style that manages to convey the day to day realities of medieval life without dawdling on unnecessary detail. Dougherty sets the pace, and then accelerates, interweaving believable characters and an intriguing, historically accurate plot in this entertaining, engaging and exciting thriller.
