The editor of this book abandoned his own children.
The editor of this book, Andre C. Willis walked out on his two african american sons when they could not walk or talk. He left his wife with an infant and a newborn to fend for herself by herself. He has been in contepmt of court regarding child support, a deadbeat dad as they are called now. He is the last person who should talk about fatherhood, espicially concerning faith. The excerpts from the men in the book are viable, but under the circumstances questionable. Did they not care that their editor willingly failed and gave up as a father?

It is like writing an excerpt in a book edited by Ike Turner condemning spouse abuse and wife beating! Most of the men who participated in the book knew of the editors personal life, how and why they overlooked this is a shame. Some were even character witnesses at trial. Making the conscious decision to disregard the responsibility to your wife and children, then editing a book like this seems hypocritical.

Everyone must read this book!
Andre Willis delivers a magnificant compilation of leading intellectuals sharing their advice on parenting. While the essays assembled in this text are reflections on African-American fatherhood the lessons shared are applicable to anyone who has loved a child. The tales told by each writer are touching, humorous and profound, offering a seldom-seen and moving view into the deeply personal interactions between generations of men.

The phrase, "it takes a village" may be trite but the principle of the substantial effect a community has in the upbringing of each child cannot be disputed. For that reason, it doesn't matter if you are male or female, with children or without, african-american or any other race, everyone should read this book.

This is the most important text on fatherhood available.
this is a wonderful text, a tour-de-force about the power and trouble of intimacy, love and vulnerability. these narratives, collected from black men, are poignant and moving - particularly the last essay. i recommend this profound text to those who are in the least interested in good writing and at best in wisdom, faith and an examined life.
