American Academia and the Survival of Marxist Ideas
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (1996)
Author: Dario Fernandez-Morera
Amazon base price: $72.95
Used price: $42.50
Average review score:

Reveals much about the Marxist bent of American academics
Fernandez-Morera has written the "must read" book of the decade for anyone considering an unrestricted donation to almost any major American university. The author, an academic like Paul Hollander, is a brave soul, willing to risk being ostrasized by the entire radical-left contingent of American academia, in order to expose the degree to which the Church of Karl Marx has become established on American campuses. Quoting from the writings of marxist academics themselves, he makes the case that the university is a place where free and open discussion is welcome only if it attacks free markets and private property, where it is more acceptable to be a Marxist than it is to be a Republican, and where Hayek's prescient 1944 work on socialism, Road to Serfdom, is virtually unknown, even though read widely in many former marxist states in Eastern Europe. It is also essential reading for parents with pre-college children who are planning to spend over the next few years, a hundred thousand dollars or so on a unversity degree in either the social sciences or the humanities , in the mistaken belief that something of value is being purchased.

The Best Intro to Dario Fo
This book offers a fantastic introduction to Nobel Prize Winner Dario Fo's theatre, cultural context and roots. It's essays discuss his performance, his writing and the wonderfully controversial and comical elements of Fo's unique theatre. The essays are by Fo specialists all over the world and they are excellently introduced by the editors (Farell and Scuderi), both eminent Fo specialists themselves. "Stage, Text and Tradition" is a very clear, concise and illuminating presentation of one of the greatest actors/performers/authors of own time. If you are in to theatre and life, I strongly recommend this book!

Education: Intellectual, Moral, and Physical
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge Scholars Press (01 April, 2002)

A classic Victorian-era philosophy book
This volume concerns education of the physical, moral and spiritual nature, in addition to contemplating what knowledge is worth. Herbert Spencer was the pre-eminent philosopher and sociologist of the Victorian era in Britain; his views on "social Darwinism" are largely discredited today, but still latent. In his book SOCIAL STATICS, Spencer stressed the importance of individual freedom and the inevitability of human progress - with white males at the forefront of the vanguard of progress.

Elizabeth

Drag Queen Bess
This is a wonderful, witty play that deserves to be brought back in print immediately. Quite different from the recent romantic Elizabeths in _Elizabeth_ (directed by Shekar Kapur) and _Shakespeare in Love_ (directed by John Madden) ELizabeth I here appears in male drag throughout the play. (The play is subtitled "almost by chance a woman.") Represented as a grotesque figure, Elizabeth regularly goes out in London disguised as a man in order to spy on her subjects. Written in the early 1980s, the play is a Jean Genetesque satire directed at Margaret Thatcher and her Tory government. It is one of many instances wherein Elizabeth is represented in drag. In a 1980s management training video, John Cleese played a Thatcherian Elizabeth hectoring a restive Privy Council. And the last episode of The British sit-com _Blackadder II_ (Miranada Richardson of _The Crying Game_ fame plays Quen Besie), a Prince Ludwig masquerades as Elizabeth and kills the entire court. More recently, Labame houston's playlet _Elizabeth R_ also has Elizbeth in drag. And in Sally Potter's _Orlando_, an ageing Elizabeth is played by the famous drag queen Quentin Crisp. Perhaps Fo's play is not so far away from _Elizabeth_ and _Shakespeare in Love_ as one might think at first sight. For though she does not appear in these films in male drag, Elizabeth is the cause of drag in others. In _Elizabeth_, Anjou's marriage proposal is dismissed after Elizabeth discovers him relaxing in bed dressed in women's clothes, and in _Shakespeare in Love_, only Elizabeth can see through the corss-dressed disguises of both Shakespeare and Viola. Fo's _Elizabeth: Almost by Chance a Woman_ deserves a wide readership. I certainly hope to see in print again soon.

Really great stuff
This is a not too technical book, introducing you to evolutionary robotics. It covers a lot of interesting work done in the field over the last few years.

Using genetic algorithms it is possible to construct the brain of a robot ( Neural network ), and even (though harder) the hardware itself. The book gives an introduction to genetic algortihms & artificial neural networks, but the reader should still be somewhat familiar with these concepts before buying this book.

After reading this book, I did one of the experiments mentioned in the book. While I only did this with a freeware Kephara robot simulator, it was still fun.
