Excellent learning resource
I bought my children this book, and they *love* it! Join Big Bob as he takes a visit into town, shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, and help him correct the calamitous spelling and grammatical errors he finds on his journey. From the "Donna" Kebab shop, to the "Fish and Chip's" shop, it's fun every step of the way. Laugh as he tries to rent "Fried Green Tomatos at the Whistle Stop Cafe" from the "DVD's and Video's" shop, wince as he reads a "Smile, your on camera!" sign above the till, and grin, as he ultimately ends up at the "grocerys store" to buy his "Thanksgiving Potatos". I just hope that the author's middle name isn't a spelling mistake as well!
Well worth a "reed".

It's a calculus book for Christ's sake!
This book is so good I never did any of the homework for the class it was for, only studied the night before each test, and pulled an honest-to-God straight A in the class. But this is calculus. If the text weren't so damn expensive I would have burned it in effigy. The book has nice pictures and the business-based questions are mind-numbingly easy. The science questions blow. If you don't like science, this will re-affirm your feelings. And don't forget that the answers to the odd problems are in the back. Just the answers though, but they still help. Supposedly this book has a suppliment and a CD to it, but I never monkeyed around with that. Didn't even purchase it, come to think of it...

Chicago Days/Hoboken Nights
Daniel Pinkwater is noteworthy in many respects, but what fascinates me most is the way in which he manages to be brilliant, moving, and profound without ever accentuating the negative. This autobiographical collection of brief, bite-size narratives (perfect for bedtime, the bathroom, or the ten-minute break at work) chronicles Pinkwater's development as an artist/writer, and gives the reader the opportunity to enjoy the world through the eyes of a funny, intelligent man who truly loves life. This is a non-fiction, non-children's book by a children's author.

If you can possibly get a copy of this book, do it!
I do a national radio show and I keep a copy of Ducks in my office thinking, that, someday, if some story drops out right before we go on the air, I can always read Ducks! to the audience. Plot: boy buys stuffed duck from a candy store. Turns out to be a real duck. That talks. The duck tells the boy to make a wish. Then tells him what to wish for. Namely, a big chariot with lots of cool looking stones and a really neat paint job. He wishes for it. The sky opens. Two big ducks bring him the chariot. The story continues through other twists and turns. At one point, the Duck takes the boy to a place where there's fleecy clouds and ducks everywhere. The boy asks where they are. "Heaven." says the duck. "Doesn't look like heaven to me," says the kid. "For one thing, everyone here looks like a duck except me." The duck looks him over. "You look like a duck to me." The parents in the story are always telling the kid "Don't ducks usually lie?" At one point, the kid says something to the duck and the duck asks, "where you ever hear that?" And the kid says he heard it from his parents and the duck says "Parents usually lie." Remember, this is a kids book. What other kids book includes THAT sentence? I mean, a real kids book, wiht pictures, a picture book. I found a copy in a used book store. No one comes to my home without eventually reading it, or having me read it to them. This book is a national treasure. But a hidden one. Find your copy. Do whatever it takes. You won't be sorry. Ira Glass, producer, "This American Life."

Hilarious, moving essays and stories, well read
If you can get a copy of this audiobook, BUY IT.

This two-tape set contains readings, by the author, from his essay collection _Fishwhistle._ These in turn are transcriptions of his NPR essays. They cover a wide variety of topics, from Zen to raising malemute dogs to children's literacy.

It's hard to describe Pinkwater's style. Suffice to say that I've seen friends that I've played these for laugh unto injuring themselves.

Eat pudding.

Cool cool cool
Lawrence Talbot turns into a werewolf and nobody notices! Still, he had a pretty good time, staying up all night and howling at the moon. Perfect second grade stuff. I re-read it all the time.

This is the story of a real dockside dog in Hoboken. Hisadventures--perhaps made up--are the stuff of legend. His origins; hisrise to fame and glory; it's all here. Along with a happy ending. Bitsof the real Hoboken show up now and again--it's a story you will enjoy reading yourself as much as reading to your kids. And mine sneak it off the shelf behind my back.

Funny and imaginative
I heard Daniel Pinkwater reading this book on NPR and going to recommend it to friends with children aged 7-12, it's truly a book children and adults can enjoy together. Seymour's travels with the goose, recipes for Corn Flake Soup, all memories I'm going to have for a while.

Great book for storytelling!
The Terrible Roar by Manus Pinkwater is wonderful for storytelling. A lion's roar causes things to disappear. Each roar is illustrated as a color ful spiral, alerting children to roar at the appropriate time. Fanciful, colorful & exciting, it is a fun and easy book for any storyteller, just reading the book or using a flannelboard technique. Lots of fun!

ROTFL
This is a really really really funny book. Really. There are not that many books that will make an adult and a child snort milk out their noses, but this is one.

It is also a very useful book to defuse any bedtime terror left over from inappropriate television viewing. If your child is scared of vampires, this book will make it better.
