Pershing and His Generals : Command and Staff in the AEF
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (1997)
Author: James J. Cooke
Amazon base price: $64.95
Average review score:

Important study of the AEF.
The Great War found the United States unprepared, as is our custom. Excluding the Spanish American War debacle, we had never really fought overseas, and there was no one in the American military in 1917with any experience in the command or management of large formations. Fortunately there was John J. Pershing, who not only had the organizational skills but the political strength to build and hold together the new armies. Pershing's Herculean tasks of finding new leadership and eliminating deadwood, training the troops (and their leaders!), tapping civilian talent for special skills, organizing new staff functions and assimilating new technologies, so reminiscent of World War II, are well described here in Cooke's usual clear and workmanlike narrative; in a work essential for the World War I bookshelf and of interest to the general reader as well.

A great book to understanding Donne
Donne is probably the most misunderstood poet. Now analyzing his works we can begin to see the depth of this man and the affects of history on his writings--and of his writings on history. This book will definitely help you understand the difficult poetry without explaining every little boring detail, since you are the one studying it, you should find out on your own.

An incredible spiritual journey with Francis
Are you interested in Francis and his spirituality? Do you want to learn more about him? This book is a superb way to explore the spiritual life either individually or with a group. I've used it again and again. In fact I've worn out my first copy and had to get another! Organized into 15 topics by chapter the book includes prayers, editorial introductions, the words of Francis, opportunity for reflection and action, and relevent scriptures for each topic. Topics covered are: The Central Place of the Gospels, Holy Poverty, The Good Sense of Foolishness, Blessed Peace, Coutesy, Right Action, Simplicity, Serving Our Neighbors, Littleness, Glorious Nature, Humility, The Church, Struggle, Worship, and Joy. I am a minister. I have used the book personally and in groups. When used with 7th grade boys and with adults all were moved toward Christian maturity following in the footsteps of Francis their guide.

A Guide for the Serious Tourist
The authors present this book as a preparatory guide for those wishing to make the most of a visit to Amish settlements. They succeed admirably. In a mere 131 pages of very readable text (plus recipes) they present the history, faith and life style of the Amish, with an emphasis on understanding their values.

Many books centre on the Lancaster County (PA) Amish. This book centres on the Amish of Ohio, which has the most Amish of any state, without forgetting the other regions. This is not a guide detailing the specific sites of interest, however it does offer very useful information for the serious tourist. For example, if the store sign says ÒAmishÓ you can be sure the operator is not Amish. The book also reminds us that the details of Amish clothing and practice vary somewhat from district to district, thus avoiding the error of oversimplification often found in other books.

Those looking for a picture book should look elsewhere. The pictures (b/w) are interesting and useful, but often not of exceptional quality (the cover photos are excellent). With respect to the Amish sensitivity, there are no facial close-ups of Amish people. Perhaps this is another indication as to how serious tourists should behave as well.

Despite the easy read, there is a surprising amount of information in this book. The authors obviously know their sociology and the Amish but, thankfully, the book remains a guide for the general public and not a sociological study.

I am a Roman Catholic priest in rural TŽmiscamingue (N-W QuŽbec, Canada) with a particular interest in community. I cannot pretend any direct contact with the Amish though I have shared with a Mennonite group. Other authors I would recommend : John A Hostetler and Randy-Michael Testa as well as Menno Simons for the founding theology.

Some of the most controversial issues of spirituality
A Rebel To His Last Breath provides the first biography of one Joseph McCabe, a former Catholic priest who became a champion of free thought and rationalism in the first half of the 20th century. Why chart the life of a man largely forgotten today? Because he tackled some of the most controversial issues of spirituality and social issues of modern times, and his efforts and writings continue to influence.
