Pierre et Gilles are exquisite interpreters of campy glamour.Their sexy saints,their innocently looking yet sizzyingly sexy boys and girls, are like a sumptous glittering candy. I've savoured their work.

This beautiful produced book , accompanying a major exhibition at the new Museum of Contemporary Art, in New York, is a wonderful introduction for anyone to Pierre & Gilles beautiful & unique combination of photography and painting. I have been a fan of Pierre & Gilles for many years, and have enjoyed all of the wonderful collection of books published about them over the years, but this book was indeed welcomed because it has a lot of their new unpublished photographic paintings. Art critic & curator, Dan Cameron, gives a great overview & history of Pierre & Gille's photographic paintings as well as a complete explanation of all of the images presented in this book. It's very insightful and I learned a lot more than I knew before.

So if you are a true fan of Pierre & Gilles work you definitely should have this beautiful book in your collection, or if their work is new to you this is one of the best introductions to their talented and very unique photography.

These two artist are some of the most avantgard and ambicouis photographers of our time. With their representations of saints and their homoerotic pieces they have something for jsut about anybody. I recommmend this book to anyone who is looking to add a very different type of art to their home library!

The book, as well as the exhibit, works equally well as a history text, and would be a valuable asset to any high school history classroom. The book's aesthetic appeal makes it perfect for display on any bookshelf of coffee table--which is a shame. Sadly, many people might neglect the actual text, which is as detailed and valuable synopsis of American history in the twentieth century as any other printed to date.

This catalogue has excellent photographs that gives one a sense of the attitude of the Beat Generation. Everyone is familiar with the writers of the period, but not everyone knows about art generated during those years. This catalogue gives a review of art, film, and writing being created at the time. Not only that but it devotes a chapter to women and a chapter to minorites working during the time period. A good source of information for anyone interested in the 1950's to the early 1960's.

An interesting and comprehensive survey of Ray's work throughout the 70's, 80's, and into the 90's. The interview with the artist is funny and informative and the reproductions of his work here are beautiful.

I strongly recomend this book for someone who wants a "Who's Who" of the American fine arts scene. I have spent many hours scanning the names and pictures, aborbing the exciting 50 years of American contempoary arts.

I cannot recommend this book as an especially well-written commentary on that scene, however. Some sentences contain refrences to handfulls of artists with little direction or explanation. Of course the authors were required to give fair coverage to thousands of artists who had their 15 minutes of fame in US art galleries. I follow this scene pretty closely professionally. I can report that I did not find any glaring ommissions from their collection of artists. As you might expect, regional artists received barely a nod and little is said about "outside" art.

If you are looking for a great explanation of "modern" art, try "The Shock of the New" by Robert Hughes, which Amazon indicates is still in print (and rated 5 stars, almost).

But if you are interested in the "Sears Catalog" of the fine arts in the past 50 years, this is the book you want.

So after 2000 years of history, someone claims to have proven that John didn't write his own Gospel?

The author claims that, not only is there no proof in the Bible that the apostle John wrote the Gospel of John, but there is "proof" in the Bible that it was written by someone else. The operative term here being "in the Bible", because that is all he's willing to use - no evidence can come from anywhere else - and the KJV Bible at that. It's like the author is using the Bible as his own personal game of "Clue" and he will bend and break rules of scriptural interpretation, historical document interpretation and simple rules of logic to try to show that it was Colonel Lazurus in the town of Bethany with the pen.

For example, Phillips claims in the introduction that the three disciples at Jesus' transfiguration were SUPPOSED TO tell people about it after His resurection and gives three verses to support it. Why would John keep quiet about it and leave it out of his gospel?, he says. But a quick glance at the verses will show that Jesus said NOT to tell anyone until after that time. Obviously, it would be a good thing to tell after the time alloted by Jesus. But, there's a difference between "don't tell anyone until a point" and "you must tell after a point". These two statements cannot mean the same thing and is tantamount to twisting Jesus' words. This kind of shoddy detective work permeates the book.

The author has pulled together only the passages that seem to support his cause and does not tackle the texts that presents problems for it. Otherwise, the book is easy to read, but be prepared to shake your head alot. And it helps if you enjoy exclamation points and bold type. It takes a lot of extra punctuation and fonts to try to hide the paper thin structure that this book is built on.
