Fine Place to Start
"Discover the Internet" is the simplest, least expensive way to learn about exploring the Internet, this book teaches readers not only the most enjoyable places to visit in cyberspace, but also the most important functions the Net can serve. This book has lots of useable information and I would recommend it to anyone using the Internet. This guide is both fun to read and lists many useful sights and places to go. You will learn how to navigate the web, join in chats, visit you ancestors, and zillions of cyberspace information and activities. This is a great place to start.

Great Book for Beginners

This book quickly gets beginners up to speed. But at the same time, doesn't attempt to overwhelm them with techno-garble. It even includes lots of screen shots, including one of Amazon.com.

Working in the industry it has the answers to commonly asked questions. How to block web sites from children? How to protect from Viruses? How to download? How to e-mail? Where are some of the best sites? Working with Favorites or Bookmarks? How to SUCCESSFULLY search?

I carry it around like a Bible for people to look at. It is a must buy for anybody who wants to web-savvy without being a techno-genius

A 'precious' book
Services Marketing in Asia is extremely well-written and a rare gem. The base text on Service Marketing teaching is great - vintage Lovelock and team you could say - but what stood out for me was the wealth of case studies.

I have been through a couple of similar books in the past. But coming from Singapore, I have found most of the examples and case studies to be American or Euro-centric in nature, and not always readily applicable to the Asian context.

Not to say that non-Asians would not benefit for this book, for I have found the insights in these case studies applicable across culture and industries.

I highly recommend this. This is definitely one book I would keep within an arm's length for ready reference.

Finally, a textbook on Services Marketing in Asia!
This book helps me in understanding the services marketing landscape in Asia. Filled with Asian examples and cases, it's really a gift from the god for the Asian students.

Excellent Bilingual Reference
For those who are trying to teach or learn computers, this reference gives terms in English and definitions in Spanish. It is detailed enough for advanced users, as well as easy to use for beginners. It's a must have for those who are serious about learning computers. It is a little outdated, but the basic concepts and definitions are still relative.

Makes Netspeak make sense!
This excellent resource will be invaluable to "newbies" (those new to the internet). Experienced users will also find it handy. Whether you're getting started, or need just a bit of help, you can find what you need here, in unintimidating language. Excellent cross-referencing. No home or office with internet access should be without this book

Informative and enjoyable
I would recommend this book to people who have browsed the web and now want to get involved in writing their own web pages. I love the fact its Macintosh oriented! Also, this book takes you through a (brief) history of hypertext, html, etc. and explains (briefly) the controversies between purists and standardizers - I have a better understanding of where all this came from. Pfaffenberger is an excellent and entertaining writer - maybe a little tiny bit simplistic in some ways but not condescendingly patronizing and very thorough. After having looked through several books including "HTML for Dummies" (definitely condescending) and another thick book professing to give you everything you need to know on running a website (which was written by a compendium of people and assumed you understood all sorts of things) - I would say this is a great starting point. (I rated a 9 because I feel there is ALWAYS room for improvement...)

Interview with the Explorer
Cable modem, ISDN or LAN connections all give FM radio quality to web audio. But putting shielded speakers next to the monitor will protect screen images against electromagnetic fields. Browsing web world class design and graphics is pretty in a 17" monitor with 1280 x 1024 resolution and 24 bit true color depth. But browsing entire web sites offline will need drives with 8 gigabytes of storage. The software regularly works with 16 megabytes of random access memory, but running 2+ programs at once will need 32 or 64 megabytes. Tempting though it may be, with all the quality web sites like Amazon, to get into RUNNING MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER 5 for 14+ hours every day, the service contract print probably frowns on it and you may get an excessive use warning if you internet 10-12+ hours at a stretch. Author Bryan Pfaffenberger also warns that explorers should check in with the Windows Update each month: the latest software version will always be the safest and most stable programs against any bugs or security risks lurking out in the web. As usual the author has come up with a superbly illustrated and organized book. It is useful to pool all his information with Steven A Schwartz's INTERNET EXPLORER 5 FOR WINDOWS.

Indispensable and reasonably price directory book
As anyone who's gone on the on-line search knows the sheer abundance of the websites can make it difficult to find the information that you're looking for. Provides with completely revised information that reflects the latest web directory based on interests, subjects, catagories, and many more, this book can super-change your on-line search.

So, bid farewell to the futile and frustrating web excursions. Whether you're looking for vital information or just want to know a place to hang out and kill a little time, this book helps you get where you want to go. It will be a wonderful value to many readers. I recommend it.

Good reference
I am a college student studying Web Design, so I bought this book to help me get through reading that has technology terms that I'm not familiar with. Most of the time, this book has the term that I'm looking for, and gives a basic definition. It's a quick, handy reference and it's very easy to use.

Equally useful for the tech-savvy and the casual user
In our world today technology seems to be the driver behind just about everything: entertainment, communication, and even getting your job/homework done. In such a technical environment, techno-lingo is unescapable: bits, bytes, digital, DSL, cable modem... Let's face it! Our lives are surrounded by terms we sometimes understand, but other times don't have a clue about.

This is where this dictionay comes into play. It's the perfect companion for both the casual user who just wants to understand what X technical term heard over the newscast, or read in the technology column of the newspaper means; or for the tech-savvy who wants a quick answer to a term he/she's faced with for the first time, as a starter, or a quick refresher of something not seen in a while.

Fantastic resource
As far as research books, the newer the better. This one was published in 2000, and since I'm writing in Sept. 2000, you can't ask for more than that. As an editor for an online high-tech news publication, I find the dictionary indispensible. I keep trying to test the book by looking up terms I think it won't include, but it hasn't let me down yet.

Linux Command: Instant Reference
This valuable little book has saved my sanity numerous times. It has quick and easy to understand answers and gives common examples of how to use various commands. It is like a linux cheatsheet. Anyone can use the Linux GUI, but only a master knows the command line.

This is the most useful Linux command reference book!
I have bought many Linux books in an effort to learn how
to use Linux commands. Well, after months of use, I can
confidently recommend this one above the others. It covers
just about everything there is to know to use Linux commands.
The arrangement of the book is good and it offers many examples.
Also, it covers commands and utilities glossed over by competing
books. For instance, check the make command page for its usage. The ZIP utility, safedelete and others are covered as well. This is the book I find most useful for command reference.
Highly recommended! If you choose only one command reference book, this is the one to buy for the newbie and experienced user alike.

A good reference of Linux commands
There are several books like this one available, but I think this one is the best. It is easy to read, documents the commands and switches pretty thoroughly, and has several examples for each command that demonstrate the use of the command with its switches.

This book won't teach you Linux, but once you have Linux installed and running, this book will be invaluable.
