Not Just Another Sam Spade in Space...
M. Gil Sivart, the protagonist in The Digital Effect, is a sensitive yet tough ex-engineer turned micro-carbon-sculptor -- a hard-boiled detective with a Zen attitude. The action begins when M. Sivart is presented with an investigation of a suicide that smells more of murder. The reader is lead on a fast paced tour of the scene of the crime and it's limited surrounds on the Robert E. Lee, one of the Wheelworlds in orbit around late 21st century Earth. Possible suspects are examined and clues revealed with a bit of assistance from Ray El-Sayed, a sympathetic station police investigator who has been officially warned off the case, and from the victim's significant other -- an exotic dancer with a most interesting love of her work. Additional assistance, and a humorous subplot are provided by Base Alicante, a doctor whose attraction to Gil Sivart is over ruled by his desire to make his young male lover jealous and more amorous. In this late 21st century setting, there are no tough challenges of learning heavy duty scientific or sociological concepts as the author has skillfully created a convincing backdrop for his story in plausible extensions forward of today's technologies. Fans of Steve Perry's SPINDOC and THE FOREVER DRUG novels -- or his MATADOR series -- will not be disappointed. And newcomers will find this a satisfying blend of the Mystery and Science Fiction genres. (EAG

A triumph of canine literature.
Steve Eltinge and company have put together the finest book (or dare I say, bible)of Staffords in exsistance. The photography perfectly illustrates the brilliance of this breed only to be complemented by equally crafty writing. I recommend scratching and clawing to get your hands on a copy. It is priceless!

HISTORICAL CHOOSE-YOUR-OWN-ADVENTURE
As a kid, I was a huge fan of the Time Machine series. They were like the Choose Your Own Adventure series, but so much better because of the following reasons: 1- Almost all of them are based on FACT. This book mentions A BOOK OF FIVE RINGS by famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. As it turns out, that book actually exists, as did the author. This book also mentions how Musashi died in a cave towards the end of his life--also true. 2- Instead of CYOA, you get to pick one or two of several items to take with you on your quest. Depending what you took with you will determine what action you have to take later on. 3- The books are illustrated. 4- To add more educational value, timelines and other neat stuff are enclosed towards the beginning. 5- Basically, the storyline to this books is this: You go back in time to accomplish the following mission: bring back Miyamoto Musashi's sword. You can try and steal it or just ask for it. It sounds easy, but it's not. I highly recommend not just this book, but this whole series for its wholesomeness, fun, and educational value. Many books try and be accurate, enjoyable, and educational, but this book SUCCEEDS.

I-Bots was a fun book to read.
I-Bots was a fun book to read. It stayed within the boundaries of the Asimov universe. It was an exceptionally action oriented book which sets it apart from other books in the Asimov universe. I found it to be a quick and enjoyable read. I liked it so much, I read it in one night. The book has well developed characters. The plot was well thought out with many exciting twists and turns.

Rate this book XXX for explicit sex scenes
I found this book not only boring, but absolutely not suitable for anyone under 18 because of the (to me) gratuitis and explicit sex scenes involving, woman/woman, man/woman threesome, etc. I absolutely had no expectation of this when I began reading. Also, the book is very boring, very little in the way of any "action", mostly a lot of (I presume) the author's philosophy. I skimmed through to the end, in hopes of something interesting occuring, but to no avail. I will not buy any of his books in the future!!

Book two in one of the best SF series of all time.
I'm really giving all 3 books in the series the same rating (not just Matadora)since the storyline and quality are pretty seamless across all 3. I simply cannot believe that these books are no longer in print! Martial arts, meditation, gizmos, weapons, revolution, politics, spirituality & sex. What more could you ask for in a series? Steve Perry writes tight, fast, action-packed science fiction. Yet the characters never suffer. The Matadora series gets my highest recommendation.

HELP ! Where's the third book in the series
what a read the man who never misses and matadora absorbing and entertaining .Rowie ktrow@bigpond.com

Good story turned bad
Ok, I loved this book. It was excellent. But the unnecessary swearing about 8 times on every page through me off. Plus, it strays from the movie(which I havn't seen, seeing it dosn't come out till friday). I won't reveal too many movie parts but I'll just point out one part. When Cale is having his little checkup on the Valkyrie, the book says he is totally naked and just laying there...no. Plus, the book likes to introduce a character and then take 5 pages to explain the histroy of their previous day, which isn't exactly a bad thing. This is a kids movie and the book is not. From Cale's thoughts on Akima, to the Drej Queen cutting the heads off of her drohehs(drones), to the severe swearing...I wouldn't recommend it for anyone under 13. It is a very quick read. I read it in 3 hours. For someone who wants a wonderful sci-fi fic to read, get this. It is probably the best book you'll read in a long time.

Absolutely Amazing
I cannot describe how good this book was. I thought nothing could be better than the movie and I was right, but this book is the closest thing out there. I feel that Titan A.E. is actually BETTER than Star Wars. The way that Cale's and Akima's stories tie in together is very intuitive and well planned out. I recommend this book to sci fi lovers and people who just like to listen to cool stuff happen.

Perhaps /better/ than the movie..?
I first bought this book after seeing the movie back in June 2000. Titan AE really captured my heart as a movie, I just felt it was so well done and had such an interesting (and hardly seen) plot and characters, perhaps one of the best science fiction stories I've ever read or watched, and I felt really inspired me as a writer and an artist.

I raided the book store after seeing the movie and picked out this book along with both Cale and Akima's stories, and this one was, perhaps, one of my favorites. I think it's great that they did an adult novelization of it, because not all of us are ten year old boys whose only interests are the lasers and the big bad aliens. I haven't read the book in a long time now, being caught up in other books since I discovered the fantasy genre (Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings in particular), but in a way, I felt the novelization was /better/ than the movie, just in the extra depth it put into the stories and the characters. The novelization is based on the earlier version of the film, so it has some scenes that didn't appear in the movie, which are interesting to read.

I really enjoyed reading a novelization more on an adult reading level, and for sure I'd recommend this to anyone, even people who have not seen Titan AE yet, and if you haven't, I highly encourage you to. Don't let the box office fool you; this movie, for sure, was one of those small gems that just got out at the wrong time. It is highly unfortunate this movie didn't get the attention and credit it deserved (Disney exactly a year after Titan AE's theatrical release brought out the movie Atlantis, which I felt was like their imitation of Titan AE in both quality and style, though it didn't live up). For sure seeing this movie was one of the best things I've ever done, but it's all a matter of opinion. Find out for yourself.

Surprisingly good
Earth Hive, the beginning of Steve Perry's Aliens saga, is a surprisingly action packed read that carries the themes from the first two Alien films very nicely. The story centers around two survivors from a Xenomorph onslaught, Wilks and Billie (as one reviewer previously stated, this was originally based on further adventures of Hicks and Newt from Aliens, but when both characters were killed off in the Alien 3 film, Perry was forced to make some changes) and both are re-united as The Company once again attempts to bring the life form to Earth to use as a weapon. The action is nicely paced, but sometimes Perry's storytelling becomes uneven and blurred as if he is trying to keep a certain pace with himself. Other than that Earth Hive is a great read for fans of the Alien films and is full of shocks and plenty of surprises (including a twist climatic ending) that would lead into the next books in the series; Nightmare Asylum and Female War.

Pretty solid, what Alien coulda been
I remember reading this book many years ago when it originally came out along with many of Perry's other "Aliens" based novels. From what I recall this was definitely one of the better ones. Pick it up if you were a big fan of Aliens and not Alien 3.

Ok, just to clear up a little confusion. The reason the characters Billie and Wilks seem so similiar to Newt and Hicks is because they are the same characters. This novel was adapted from a series of Dark Horse comics that came out before Newt and Hicks were killed off in Alien 3. Obviously this posed a problem when they decided to release this novel in '92. So basically they just changed the names and left the story alone. So to all the people who think the characthers in this book are unoriginal, think again. This was originally a continuation of Newt and Hicks from Aliens.

This book is the first in three thrilling novels.
This is truly the best book I have ever read. Wilks, a space marine, is removed from his cell to discover that the alien species he thought he destroyed over twenty years ago is linked to the destruction of a space freighter. He finds out the child he saved has had a brainwipe and is now trapped in a mental hospital haunted by the dreams of the horrid beasts. When Wayland-Yutani Corp wants a speciman of the alien species, Wilks is first pick to be the partal leader of a spacecraft sent to the alien planet. On the planet questions are answered as a new spieces helps them destroy the aliens. A speciman currently on earth breaks free with the aid of several religious fanatics, all hell breaks loose. Earth is introduced to two new spieces that will leed to it's destruction.

A shallow, corporate effort
While I liked parts of this book (especially the beginning) and felt Xizor to be a decent villain, this book can't compare to the better Star Wars novels published. Many parts of this book were included only because the committee overseeing the entire "Shadows of the Empire" project (the book, video game, comic, toys, etc ...) told Perry to do so. It is obvious that certain chapters were written to justify part of a video game or a new plastic vehicle to sell in the toy stores. This is an intolerable way to tell a story and probably the reason "The Phantom Menace" disappointed so many as well.

As for specific elements of the story, I agree that Dash Rendar is a shallow version of Han Solo and his insertion into the Battle of Hoth was anything but seamless. Guri was fairly interesting but the huge disappointment was the ending. The battle scene finale could not have been more unrealistic or poorly written.

I'm guessing the great number of positive reviews posted earlier are from children who have read the book after playing the video game. They seemed to have found it entertaining but after having their minds numbed by am simplistic, arcade-style game, I would guess that nearly anything would seem thoughtful by comparison.

Excellent Story, Great Bridge between epsiodes 5 & 6
Known as episode 5.5, Shadows of the Empire delves deeply into the characters who fight during the final Battle of Endor. Perry writes an excellent story, perfectly capturing the personalities of all the best Star Wars characters. Luke, Lando, Leia, Chewie and the droids are all written magnificently. The inclusion of Dash Rendar as a more mercenary and sarcastic Han Solo is another strong addition to this book. The backstory involving the Death Star is great, although Xizor though craft and evil is not one of the best Star Wars villains. While its nice to see an enemy who has no force skills, Guri is the more interesting character from the Black Sun crime syndicate. It was also interesting to see the conflicting sides of Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker. The conflict between good and evil plays out on a smaller scale in this case, but that makes it no less intriguing. The little hints about the conncection between Luke and Leia make the story stronger, while the inclusion of Luke's flying skill in an X-Wing coupled with Vader's return to a TIE fighter make for an interesting parallel between father and son. Overall, Shadows of the Empire is among the top stories of the expanded Star Wars universe, an execellent read for any Star Wars fan.

The Force is with this novel!
"Shadows" was by far one of the best "Star Wars" books I have ever read. It gives great insight into the once mysterious period between the movies "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." Many questions are answered such as: Where did Luke get a new lightsaber, How Han Solo was "delivered" to Jabba on Tatooine, Where Leia found her Boussh disguise, and why Chewbacca's hair is a bit more stream-lined in "Jedi." But this book is not only an explanation of events, but also delivers an excellent story line with flowing plots, new villains, and explosive space battles. My favorite character would have to be Prince Xizor. Not to spoil the book, but he is basically out to kill Luke Skywalker to dishonor Darth Vader. Again, this is a great book, in my opinion, because of its vast array of new characters, its depth of interest, and its exciting space battles

Content is good but disjointed in many places
The content is probably good but it is very disjointed in many places. Large print is good. Mitchell Parry's book "The Road to Optimism: Change Your Language, Change Your Life" is less disjointed. I think that the content could be written better if only one author was writing it. I found the first half of the book was much better in content and flow than the last half of the book. It didn't flow for easy understanding. I find that a good book makes me want to read it again. I have little interest in reading this one a second time. NOTE: I only read non-fiction books.

Everything you want it to be
The basic idea of this book is to look at your business from the same perspective you may have looked at sports. Sports are fun, why isn't business fun?

This book tells you how to systematically and consistantly put yourself in a peak state. I used to be a very competetive cross country runner, and this helped me translate the things I did instinctively to put myself in the best mental state for competition to the sales setting that I've been in in the last five years. I've read it several times, and I'll probably read it several more. It's just good stuff.

Just one caveat: This book does assume that you have the technical competency to perform your task. I've given this book to new salespeople who still weren't totally clear on exactly what to do, and by virtue of that fact the book was pretty useless.

So, assuming that you know the rules to your game, this book will help you get in the best mental state to play it. And it will teach you how to have fun doing it.
