Ira Peck's book The Battle of Midway is a slam- bang true-life adventure story. It has everything a good novel has--suspense, action, strong narrative, and everything a nonfiction book has-- like two sections of photographs. The first chapter's an overview of the Battle of Midway, which like the Battle of Britain two years earlier, was a David-and-Goliath battle. Although on paper, the remnants of the Seventh Fleet, and the Japanese carrier force, were evenly matched. We had three carriers: The Enterprise, the Hornet, and the Yorktown, which had been repaired in a time that would have made it into the Guiness Book of World Records if it had been around then. Nimitz asked the dock workers how long it would take to repair her. They told him two weeks. He ordered them to make it three days. They did and she sailed from Pearl Harbor on May 29th. Yamamoto thought that we wouldn't be ready in time. He thought he still had the element of surprise. He was wrong. Unbeknownst to him, we were to his west. The Battle of Midway wasn't as big a surprise as he had hoped.We only lost one carrier at Midway. That carrier was the Yorktown. The Japanese lost all four of their carriers. The Shokaku and Zuikaku didn't participate because they'd been damaged in the Battle of the Coral Sea.
