The real Colorado Cattle Barons
A cattle ranching history of the Thatcher Brothers and their brother in law Frank Bloom is long overdue. These businessmen were real people with the entreprenuerial spirt to recognize opportunities and the ability to act on their instincts. Their business acumen and ability to diversify their finances enabled them to promote the Hereford cattle industry despite numerous obstacles...limited water, the elements of weather, and vast rangelands amounting to 11 million acres. Patterson and Poole have done their homework and provided us with an authentic, well researched story on these early cattle ranches who rivalled other more well known operations such as the Prairie Land and Cattle Company from the Panhandle area. It is remarkable that Charlie Russell worked for the circle Diamond prior to becoming a western artist. The Thatcher and Bloom associations with Goodnight, Cresswell, Tony Day, Cap Mossman and the Iliff family of Denver are all indicative of their far reaching influence and successful longevity. Patterson's ability to turn a phrase which is filled with western jargon and cattle ranching terms reinforces his first hand knowledge of cattle ranching. The true history of these early cattle companies is a fascinating story of real people who worked hard to settle the American West.

THIS BOOK IS.....UM....OK, I GUESS
Okay. I read this book like 2 years ago, so this review may not be so "accurate" if you know what I mean. I'm a Beatles fan & Paul McCartney is my fave. I'm 15 so I didn't witness "Beatle Mania" but after I saw the Anthology on TV, I fell in love. Well, I heard about the rumors that Paul was dead over the internet & I didn't know it was a joke, so when I heard that this book was out, I just HAD to buy it. Well, let me tell ya. If you have the internet, you really don't need this book at all. There are tons of webpages w/the exact same info that you can get for free. Okay, so there may be 1 or 2 more clues, but not enough to buy the book. Now if you don't have the internet, then you should buy the book cuz it has all the clues plus some other stuff. All in all, the title pretty much describes the book.

P.S. I want you to know that I don't believe any of that "Paul is Dead" stuff, it's just fun to read about:)

YOU DECIDE
This is a very interesting book that I just had to have after I read about it. Because I'm such a big Beatles fan? No, because I've always been amused by all the "Paul Is Dead" speculation. No matter which side of the fence you are on, you have to admit some of this stuff is freaky, coincidential, and down right reaching for it. Either way, this is a good reference book to make up your own mind. Or just do what I do and read it like all the Roswell/UFO stuff - it makes for good fiction. If any of it turns ot to be true then you'll be up to speed (but entertained in the meantime). I really enjoyed Patterson's discussion on tying in the works of Lewis Carroll. Now go put on your headphones, dust off your turntable, and ruin another needle (or use a simple child's toy and use your cassettes). For the record, let me just state that I was never the Walrus. Goo goo g'joob.

Loved it!
As a former student of Mr. Patterson's...I learned all of this in Senior English class! I loved it then and I love it now!

Excellent.
I included a number of recipes from this book when I recently cooked an 8-course dinner. The recipes are challenging, but the process for each dish was explained clearly. In the end, the dinner was magnificent. This is a book that will find a prominent place on the shelf of any gourmand or Francophile.

Clear & attractive pictures of the inside of a B-17
This book is a good look into the inside of a B17. If you have never been inside a B17, you could find your way around after looking at this book. The use of re-enactors in authentic uniforms help you understand what it might have been like to fly into combat during WWII. The accompanying pictures from WWII support the contemporary pictures well. The text provides enough useful information to understand and appreciate the B17 and the air war of the 40's.

Cute little book
This is a cute little book for any Beatles fan, assuming you don't take the whole "paul is dead" thing seriously. There is some intresting Beatles history, and the book even talks a little about Charles Manson, which is on the subject of hidden messages.

As far as rating the book goes, I gave it 3 stars for two reasons. First of all, like I said, it's a cute little book. To rate more than 3 stars (for me anyway) a book needs to more than "cute" and more than 208 pages (which includes the bibliography). Second, I feel there should have been a few more pictures in the book. If you are going to talk about pictures on the cover of the Yellow Submarine, show what it is you are talking about.

Other than those two things, it's a good read for an airplane, a long afternoon, or something like that.

28IF...?
I remember being a little boy when my Mom told me all about the "Paul is dead" rumors, and I've always been fascinated by the odd clues in the songs and album art of The Beatles. The book is a brisk read, written in a fun, breezy style, and there's a color insert so you can see pictures of most of the visual clues described in the book.

It seems too coincidental to me that all of these clues were accidents or misinterpretations; I tend to believe that this was a big joke between John and Paul, and that after the Manson killings it was decided to just keep mum about it; After all, it did sell albums...

It was also fun to show my mom clues that she wasn't aware of. And just try to read the book and NOT go running out to buy some Beatles CD's.....

Great book!
This book was great. I saw my friend reading it in school, and me being a long-time Beatles fan asked her what it was about. When she told me, I was creeped out. I had never heard of the Paul is Dead hoax, and I belived it for a while, but then i bought another book on it while I was waiting to receive this one. The other book put too much disbelif into it. When I got this one, it wasn't as much fun as it could have been because I didnt beleive it as much anymore. I sugest if you want this book to be the best it could on the subject, read it before ant others. Other than the other book distroying most of the fun in it, It was an Awsome Book!!!

Great Technology, horrible content
This title is bad. The "Extra Smart Pages" Star Wars title is great, light years better than this one. It is elaborate and complex, whereas this title is mundane, barely a step above your basic "push this button, get a lame sound" type book. The cover says it features the voice of Meg Ryan, but it doesn't sound like her to me. Regardless, the vocal performance on this title is limp, no panache or quality at all. Ok, I'm a 40 year old technoid who enjoys excellence, so maybe this would be good for a 4 year old who loved the movie, but I can't see it. The "Smart Pages" are just your basic "press here, get a sound" type books. The "Extra Smart Pages" are much better, pressing any given button will give you different sounds or variations depending on what you are doing at the time. That is, if the content authors made the effort to use the "Extra" smart portion of the pages. These authors did not. Of the 4 I own, "Anasthasia" is the worst, "My School is Cool" is good, "Hercules" is very good, and "Star Wars" is excellent. Enjoy.

This book will keep 6-8 year olds happy on a long drive.
This is a great book for first & second graders. It talks to the kids and prompts them with questions about what is displayed on the page. The voices are from the movie, and the locations of the answers change each time the page activity is read. There are only 5 pages, but the book will still keep kids engaged during many, many sessions. This is a great value. Having seen the movie helps, but is not at all necessary. Overall, this is a keeper.

Northern Ireland 1921 1994 : Political Forces and Social Classes'

Almost incomprehensible. What is their point ?
A mismash of sociological, economic babble which doesn't seem to go anywhere. Are they trying to apologize for the shortcomings of the sectarian state or minimize them ? Their historical perspective is minimal. A complete waste of paper, ink and the readers time.

A critique of the authors's approach to partition
In this review, I will concentrate on the global approach of Bew, Gibbon and patterson on the Irish question. Their book itself is very good, especially their analyisis of contradictions within the unionist bloc. I recommend it to anyone interested in Northern Irish politics. But I think that what is highly contestable is their "red marxist" approach on the national question. in Ireland; they claim that the struggle for emancipation is opposed to the struggle for reuniting the country. They argue that "the democratic, that is to say the national stage of the Irish revolution seems to have been complete as it ever could in 1921." They claim elsewhere that recent "urbanisation and industrialization have relegated the national question to the margin of Irish politics" ; thus "there is nothing inherently reactionary about a national frontier which puts Protestants in a numerical majority". They even adavance that "Imperialism's real impact upon Irish society has not been a substantial one"!!! Thus, for them, the issue of partition has no substantial material basis, it divides catholic and protestant workers (thus hinders socialist struggle) they refuse to see it as a question of democracy and emancipation regarding it as an issue of "territorial completion". Socialists should work to democratize the two partition states and not concern themselves with national reunification as "reactionary nationalists" do. As to the mythical nature of the national question today, nothing could be further from the truth. Every single aspect of economic, political, and ideological life in the north of Ireland is overlaid, "overdetermined" by the national question. Until the national question is settled, there can be no "pure" class politics in Ireland. To presume that the left can organize solely on class issues is to judge that the national question will go away if we only ignore it. Or to presume that the working class in the north can forget about the national question and unite on social and economic isssues only is volontarism of the most crass kind. The conflict over territorial boundaries is not a question of some instinctual "territorial completion". It is not the struggle over the territorial extent of the NI state per se which, in an emancipatory perspective denies its legitimacy. The border is a geographical expression of the sectarian class relations through which the state operates, and on which its very existence depends. The border is the over-arching manifestation of the structural inequality between catholics and protestants. This is why socialists work to "smash the orange state", one of the main reasons being the irreformable caracter of the state. But, this is not to say that nationalism is suficient (or synonymous with) to bring socialism about. But, appart from their contestable views, it should be well stressed that the book is really worth reading, the authors are very rigorous in their analyses which attain a high level of quality, unfortunately abscent from most books relating to the questions relating to the north of Ireland.
