Does Abel Get Home?
Abel's Island is an adventurous and intense book. It has a good message about how you are on the inside and not just the outside. The story begins when Abel (a mouse) and his wife Amanda are out on a picnic. A hurricane starts and they have to find shelter. They find shelter and Amandas scarf blows away and Abel runs after it. He tumbles and falls and the next thing he knows he is stranded on an island. He fails in all his attemps to get off the island. Then one day a frog named Gower comes along. They become great friends. Then Gower leaves promising to bring back help, will he? This book will glue to your hands when you pick it up and you will want to read on!

A must-read for kids AND their parents
Pet overpopulation is such a huge problem, and this book handles the major solution to that problem--spay/neuter--through the eyes of a child in a sensitive, warm manner. Parents should read this to their child...and vice versa! The fact that the book is bilingual (English/Spanish) broadens its audience even further. Every school and public library, every Humane Society education department, every children's storyhour should use this book.

Valenzuela's Argentina is terror personified
This novel is amazing- a deeply disturbing often sadist romp into the netherworld of post-Peronist Argentina where a derranged minister of Juan Peron's second wife (not Evita) runs the show and choke-holds the Argentinian people with his "powers" and his psychosis. Very trippy- fun, in a sick, sick way. Expert craftsmanship and exciting narrative voice. Buy it and read it right away- then pass it on to a friend who can handle it.

A touching, funny, and powerful book
I'm on my third copy of this book now, having lost my two others to careless borrowers. Alegria's ability to combine prose and poetry, personal insights and political and social commentary, and sadness and laughter is extraordinary. You don't need to know Salvadoran politics to enter into the experiences of a girl and woman changed forever by the society she lives in, and to relate to them.

Excellent Training Resource
I bought this book to learn Publisher 2000 from ground-zero (I had no previous experience). I found it to be clear and flow logically, and build upon the concepts learned. A feature I really liked was how the author actually anticipates the reader's questions, and answers them in the side margins on each page. I also appreciated how Ms. Simone addresses artistic concepts and the elements of good layout design. After reading this book, I composed my annual Christmas newsletter, designed and published an advertisement for my employer, and posted my personal web page on the Internet - all from the knowledge I gained from this book.

An intuitive, well designed approach to using MS-Publisher.
As a long-time user of Microsoft Publisher, I was hesitant to pick up a copy of this book; I should not have hesistated at all. Luisa Simone's book on MS-Publisher 97, Microsoft Publisher by Design, not only is an excellent guide to the technical aspects of the software but a guide to content and design as well. Ms. Simone makes excellent use of screen shots and real-life applications to take readers through the step-by-step creation of 13 different projects, all without relying on templates or software "wizards". Her keen insight to publication design and her ability to anticipate the need for "hand-holding" makes this an invaluable guide for new and experienced users alike. For anyone that is thinking of purchasing MS-Publisher 97, as well as for those who are "hardened veterans" of the program, this is a definitive guide; a must-have in your library. Microsoft would have done well to have made this the manual that came with the program
My First Missal
Published in Paperback by Alba House (1995)
Amazon base price: $3.50
Average review score:
The Mass nicely explained for children
"My First Missal" is one of those little books that is so inexpensive, you might not immediately see its usefulness... "My First Missal" tracks the entire Mass (with pastel-colored drawings along the way), explaining why we do the things we do in simple-to-read detail, following the pattern of the Mass in Ordinary time. It is easier for kids to follow along with than it is for them to use the missalette in the pew. There's also a nice part at the end which explains the Sacrament of Reconciliation and teaches children how to examine the conscience. We keep copies of this little book on our church's book table and my children each have their own copy.

A mirror into the heart of many girls . . .
Shannon's Mirror is the story a teenage girl who goes on a diet with a friend. But a diet is not where it ends. Soon, Shannon's eating gets out of control. No matter what her weight is, she always feels fat and self-conscious. Shannon realizes she is getting weaker and she finds it hard to keep up with her daily activities. But she will do anything to be thin. Shannon runs to keep thin. She even goes out in the middle of the night so her parents don't realize how obsessed she is with her weight. Eventually, Shannon is too weak to do her daily tasks and she is put in the hospital where she is monitored. There is a shocking ending that is unexpected. It's a sad but a true to life story that we see all the time. This book provides us with a window to see into the hearts of many girls with the same battle that Shannon had.
