The Print and the Darkness
He was bound determined not to paint people reading and women knitting, but instead to show people who breathed emotions into his darkly suggestive prints. "Death in the sickroom" showed family members at the ages when they were painted, not when his sister Sophie died; it expressed unity in grief as one of death's longlasting effects by seemingly overlapping planes flowing together across bleakly empty areas, starkly B&W contrasts, and stiffly posed mourners frozen in misery. "The mirror" heads of a disembodied man and woman was his first woodcut to give up the Japanese method of printing each color with a separate woodblock; instead, he jigsawed blocks into pieces according to compositional design, linked each piece with a different color, and put everything back together into a multicolored print. He considered his "Sick child II" his most important print: his first color lithograph, it focused on the diseased upper chest and the head in profile facing right against a large pillow in order to gaze with tragically meditative resignation into the flatly patterned looming void on the far right. However, his "Scream" became the most compelling image for the late twentieth century: it expressed terror before the universe by powerfully decorative lines reverberating through the starkly opposed black lines and bleakly white voids of pulsing land and sky. Elizabeth Prelinger and Michael Parke-Taylor have applied reader-friendly illustrations and text to their catalog of the Vivian and David Campbell exhibition. Their SYMBOLIST PRINTS OF EDVARD MUNCH goes down good with PROGRESSIVE PRINTMAKERS by Warrington Colescott and Arthur Hove, PRINTS AND PRINTMAKING by Antony Griffiths, EDVARD MUNCH by Josef Paul Hodin, and THE PRINT IN THE WESTERN WORLD by Linda C Hults.

The Lost World should have stayed lost
This novel didn't appeal to me as much as the first Jurassic Park.Micheal Crihton should have left Ian Malcolm out of this story because any person who had suffered a life threatening experience like he had to face, would never go back to a similar place to Jurassic Park . The first novel had a plot which connected to everything in the story. This Novel was basically go to the Island, run from Dinosaurs, then escape from the Island. In the begining of the book Dinosaurs were being washed up on beaches in Costa Rica. The only reason they were going to go to the island was to see what was driving these creatures into the ocean. It never came out with why the dinosaurs were swimming from the island. There was some good action throughout the book . I was disappointed with this novel and that is why I only gave it 3 Stars.

Exciting Book; Keeps You Glued To Your Seat
The Lost World is even more exciting than Jurrasic Park. It has lots of twists and turns that should make you lose track of time and miss class. The main thing that made the book exciting is that it has missing links to the first book in the sequel.

I recomend this to anybody that likes blood and horrer.
Like i said before i recomend this book to anybody that likes blood and horrer,i saw the movie and it was scary but when i saw the book i was so amaized that i bought it and i read it over and over again and again.I think the book was better than the movie because they added more action and more of the scarry stuff and I know im going to read it again but i probibley wont right again but you can find another one of my coments in a book cald Desparete Persute,my name is JESSE GALINDO if you can find me.

Sizzle Spicy Smackaroo
Great cookbook! The recipes are easy to understand and even better tasting. Mr. Kerr has a flair for setting the mood for each of his recipes with anecdotal descriptions of how to serve and what to serve with the dish. The only drawback is sometimes the recipes call for ingredients that are not easily obtained (common grocery store), but he warns of that in the book! It's a good read and a great cookbook.

a great summer cookbook
I love the Kerr family thinking when it comes to food-- big, blowsy, can't-have-too-much-of-a-good-thing type thinking. I've used this cookbook for five years, and everything I make has great, authentic Tex-Mex taste. I'd take any advice Park Kerr is giving out.

Outstanding!
Every recipe that I have tried from this book is great! I use this cookbook more than any other!

Unleashing a Ceramic Art Movement
There have been other books and journal articles written about this remote Mexican village, but with the publication of "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz," a more comprehensive exposure is given to the talented artisans living there. No longer will Americans snub their noses at the Made in Mexico country of origin trademark. The incredible pottery of Mata Ortiz has done much to dispel the notion of Mexican art as being inferior to American art.People the world over can now appreciate the beauty of the works that are produced in the village since the book clearly shows the artists with full-size colored photographs of their creations. In addition, but not less important, the authors introduce us to the potters in such a personal way that we can't help but feel an attachment to them and to their lives. We also learn of the historical importance of the ancient Casas Grandes ruins from which Juan Quezada, the founder of the movement, first explored and experimented. This nearby pre-Columbian city was an important trading center from Mesoamerica to the Southwest and was noted in the 12th to the 15th centuries for its high quality pottery production. Now, people will have a greater understanding of the connection between the tribes of Mexico to the tribes of the Southwest. This book has it all and is most welcomed by experts and collectors alike.

The Many Faces Of Mata Ortiz
This is the best pottery book I have ever found! It is layed out in an informative, and beautiful manner. Not only is the pottery exquisite, but the photographs represent the pieces at their best. It is easy to understand, and gets one passionate about an art movement, that we can actually be a part of, in this twenty-first century. It is highly unsual to be living during a time when a new art movement is going on, and still striving for it's pinnacle. We see this with the unequalled workmanship of the Matiz Ortiz people in their Casas Grandes/Matiz Ortiz pottery. I really enjoyed getting to know each potter by name and photo, coupled with seeing their work, and feeling a part of their extended family. Juan Quesada, the founder of this artistic movement, is a highly spiritual individual, generous and gifted beyond belief. He is the reason that this wonderful pottery is being shown to the world. I am an artist that does pottery, and a retired teacher. I would recommend this book to all art teachers, and anyone who appreciates great art.

BeauBeautiful photography of sublime pottery and artisans
This book was my introduction to the world of the artisans of Mata Ortiz, Mexico, and their amazing ceramic creations. While the decorative motifs and other aspects of the pottery were familiar to me, I found that the photography, which I suspect was done with specialized "light painting" techniques, brought out the form, texture, and pattern of the pieces with wonderfully rich detail and nuance. The images were clearly created by a photographer who was very intent on rendering a physical, tactile sense of the objects she was recording. Coupled with other photographs of the artisans at work, and the surrounding Mexican landscape, the book is a compelling portrait of both the people who create the works of art and the art itself.

Read, Then go SEE the MAGIC...
My wife and I have been to Walt Disney World 3 times in the last 4 years and it's getting tough to explain to our friends and family just why it is we spend money and valuable vacation time at the same place. In a word, it's: MAGIC. Walt Disney World is so much more than an collection of amusement parks filled with thematic attractions interspersed with gift shops and restaurants. Walt Disney World is a study in customer service excellence. It is one man's dream come true. We go as much to be inspired as we do to relax and have fun. This book was an excellent companion to our visit providing insight into just how Disney consistently delivers a quality experience.

So why is Disney flat-lining? Well, this is off the book, but if Michael and the gang are listening- in a word it is "Saturation". In Disney's effort to "be everywhere" the magic wears off. Disney stores in the mall, all over radio and TV, and in many ways becoming omnipresent, they are going to pull a "Planet Hollywood". They need to keep a healthy distance- not chasing people everywhere for fear the competition vying for their time and attention will somehow win out. Just keep doing the basics well and let the customers come and find you.

Outstanding Book About Disney, By Disney
I highly recommend this easy-reading book for three reasons. First, it helped me understand and appreciate how Disney continues to deliver the highest quality products and services year-in and year-out. Secondly, it clearly described many proven ways and concepts to improve my organization's customer service. Lastly, this book gave me a lot of practical lessons that can and should be adapted to fit into most management or leadership situations.

I read a couple of outstanding books by Disney-outsiders ("Built to Last" by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras, and "The Disney Way" by Bill Capodagli and Lynn Jackson) about how and why they were so impressed with Disney. I wanted to read a book about a Disney-insider's perspectives on what Disney does to impress everyone and exceed all expectations. This book showed me the "what" of Disney's practical magic of customer service: a full-time business of shared values, enforced standards, focused work, self-discipline, and attention to detail that is virtually transparent to all Disney guests. I got all that I wanted and more from this outstanding book.

After I finished reading this book, I read through my highlights and realized that the following paragraph from the introduction perfectly previewed the book:

"In this book, we take you behind the scenes to discover Disney best practices and philosophies in action. We provide you with an insider's glimpse of quality service principles in action both at Walt Disney World, as told from the perspectives of cast members [Disney-speak for "employees"], and in other organizations, as told by executives who have participated in Disney Institute programs. Walt Disney's fundamentals for success still ring true. You build the best product you can. You give people effective training to support the delivery of exceptional service. You learn from your experiences. And you celebrate success. You never stop growing. You never stop believing."

Sharing the secrets behind Disney's 'practical magic' in this book is yet another example of Disney's commitment to exceptional guest [Disney-speak for "customer"] service. Read this book and enjoy being Disney's guest.

Great Teaching Tool
As the Director of an Entrepreneurship Program at a private University, I have found this book to be a valuable teaching tool. Students at all levels of learning enjoy the book because it connects practical stories that students can understand to important aspects of customer service as well as employee management. As recent visitors with our two young children, my wife and I enjoyed the book purely from a "guest" perspective. You can really appreciate all that goes into the magic of the Disney parks by reading this book.

Jurassic Review
When a person first reads the cover of Jurassic Park by Michale Crichton they might think it was just another dinosaur book. But that's where they would be wrong. The book Jurassic Park has a good reason for being the number one best selling book.

Alan Grant is a paleontologist that is invited to go stay at an old friend's resort he just built. When Alan goes he brings along his assistant Elie Sattler, he also meets Gennaro a lawyer, Ian Malcolm a mathematician, Denis Nedery a computer specialist and Tim and Lex Murphy to kids that are related to the Park owner John Hammond.

After Alan Grant finally gets to the island he sees strange creatures but it only takes him a second to realize that he's looking at dinosaurs, living breathing dinosaurs. The island has an advanced genetic research facility and has been creating dinosaurs for the main attraction of the park. Every thing in the park is perfect. But is there really such a thing as perfect, and what will happen if something major goes wrong.

The thing that mainly drives the characters is their will to stay alive. The power has gone out and now some of the most dangerous things to ever to walk the earth are out on the prowl. All the people wish to stay alive so they revert to the way people get in an extreme situation. They go to thinking survival of the fittest, they must find safety, and kill the things hunting them. Though in some people their fear consumes them, like Ed Regis who ran from a T-Rex and was sadly killed.

All the characters are changed through this no matter what they might think. No one can go through a life threatening experience and be just fine, and go back to the life the way it was before. It may be this experience that helped them have a different life and be able to see things more clearly.

The whole story is an adventure that will draw in your attention, and keep it there. Jurassic Park has the action combined with the right amount of suspense and mystery. Through out the book you will keep wondering what will happen next and who will live or die, I predict that most people that read this book will enjoy it and wish to read the two books that come after that.

A book that was ahead of its time
When this book came out in 1990, it introduced the general public to the concept of cloning. A decade before the whole cloning controversy took hold, Michael Crichton was ahead of the game, writing a novel about the negative consequences of tampering with nature. Sure, "Jurassic Park" is about cloning large dangerous animals who munch on humans, but the message is all the same.

I've read this book at least four times, and each time the book never ceases to thrill and amaze. It's a definite page-turner, and I would recommend setting aside a day or two so you won't have to put it down! :) If you like the movie, you'll like the book even more. It's like the movie to the tenth power. There is more action, more science, more everything. What is so compelling about the story is that it *could* happen. Scientists *could* find dinosaur blood preserved inside the bodies of prehistoric mosquitoes trapped in amber. They *could* extract enough DNA to recreate prehistoric life. As usual, Crichton's science is solid and well-researched, and always slightly ahead of the curve. Though some elements of the novel are outdated due to its age, the message about cloning and tampering with nature could not be more timely. All those scientists who want to clone humans should read this book and think twice about their actions.

JurassicPark
Hello my friends! How are you doing? I have a question for you. Have you ever wished dinosaurs were alive? In this book your wish comes true. InGen has started an extremely special park in Isla Nublar wich is20000 miles west of Costa Rica. By extracting DNA from mosquitoes caught in amber they have brought back to life the dinosaurs. Dr.Hammond (president of InGen) has hired Alan Grant and Dr.Elli (2 paleontologists) and the scientist Dr.Ian Malcolm to go and look at the park before it's open to public. He hopes they decide to endorse the park. But when they get there things go wrong, terribly wrong.

This book is filled with imagination and suspense. It will have you in the edge of your seat. Director Steven Spielberg made this book into a movie. This book is about how dangerous is for us, humans, to play with nature. If I could describe this book in 5 words they would be: Imaginative, suspenseful, amazing, intriguing, and clever. The author held my attention by showing me in detail each and every page of the book. This book was written by author Michael Crichton who also wrote its sequel: Jurassic Park: The Lost World. This book has different prices in different places but it is worth every penny, nickel, dime or quarter. And even if you don't want to read the book you can still go watch the movie. This book was fictious. The characters of this book are: Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Elli, Dr.Hammond, Dr.Ian Malcolm, Lex and Tim, and Dr.Hammond's lawyer. This book has a lot of action too. I give it five hearts, I recommend this book to teens, adults, seniors, and to anyone who likes to read amazing books. Although you could just watch the movie. The End and Thank You.

Must have for people with disabilities
Although this book is also useful for senior and families with young children, we use it to learn which areas in the national parks are accessible and were private vehicles are restricted. It also advises when special passes can be obtained.

Visitors to restricted areas of the parks must ride in busses, special provisions are often made for the disabled (usually requires a state diabled permit for your vehicle) allowing you to drive your private vehicle in these areas. This book gives you advance notice of when you need a special permit for this privilege. In some cases, the book has provided us with information that is not easily available from any other source. This makes the park much more accessible for the disabled.

The only reason this is not a 5 star book is that the book is 8 years old and does not cover the newer parks.

See the Parks
When you have a disability, traveling isn't easy. As the Disabilities Host on BellaOnline, I found this book to be very useful. It needs to be updated, but I think it is still beneficial and worth buying.

Respect The Canyon
I haven't been to the Canyon yet, but it's on my list of destinations to make in my lifetime. After reading "Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon" I'll know to be careful when I get there. I was unaware that the place is so hazardous--other than the obvious, that a fall off the edge is likely fatal. I read the book for the reason I assume the authors (and certainly the publisher) expect people to read it: morbid curiosity. And I suspected that was going to be the intellectual depth of their work. I was wrong.

The book is not highbrow literature by any stretch, but there is more research invested than I expected. The writers, Michael Ghiglieri and Thomas Myers, both experienced canyoneers, exert maximum effort to dissect the statistics and draw conclusions about the causes of death and what steps individuals and/or regulatory agencies might do to prevent more. This level of detail may be a turnoff to some readers, but I found it interesting and useful.

The authors can rest assured they've written an entertaining book that, through its popularity, might even help prevent an unnecessary death someday. ...

Gripping adventures
I loved this book! I found it exciting, gripping, fascinating and a book I just couldn't put down. Even though I have a busy life with a full-time job, I read it cover to cover in just a few days! I also have to say I loved the authors' sly humorous comments, and funny way of expressing themselves. Their relaxed, rather conversational style of writing made it that much more enjoyable.

Further, this book is very detailed, obviously shows careful research on the many tragedies, and is a great reference source.

Although I'm an avid reader, I don't read a lot of true adventure type books, but this is definitely one of the best I've read! It has even inspired me to go on the Internet and learn more about the Grand Canyon, and some of the true adventures.

I loved their comparison to Disneyland...so very true, that people assume since it's such a great tourist attraction, that nothing "bad" could ever happen! This book is not only a very exciting read, but as they state in the introduction, it's a good cautionary book on the very real dangers of being ill-prepared and/or overconfident in dealing with the Canyon! Hopefully people can read this and learn to use better sense whenever visiting the outdoors, anywhere.

I recommend it highly!

Nature Will Always Win If You Let It
This is a MUST-READ for anyone attempting to hike Grand Canyon. So much has been written about its grandeur and beauty. It surely is all of that, but we needed to have a book describing, in vivid detail, the "wrongs" that occur there every year because people just can't comprehend that NATURE is in control if you don't heed the warnings posted by the park service. It is so easy to think that the warnings won't affect you. I have hiked through the Canyon several times knowing about its dangers, and I have seen people suffer on route of well-marked, common trails, but you truly are on your own out there and must do the most necessary to assure a safe and fun hike. You must know your limits. This book is not meant to "scare" people because Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular places in the world to visit and surely should be experienced from below the rim, but it is vital that people know about its potential dangers. This book illustrates that many people who suffered and died had the same attitudes that many of us have when we don't know what we're getting into. "Oh, I think I have enough water", or "Let me just step out on this rock for the perfect photo", or "I'm a good swimmer, I just want to wet my body in the Colorado", and so much more!! Grand Canyon is NOT a casual "walk in the park". It remains as nature designed it, and you will surely have a rewarding experience IF you take precautions. This book is well organized and has a good summary of all the mishaps at the end of each section. So interesting to read. You'll find yourself wanting to read it at every free moment. It could, however, have used photos where they were available to really drive the message home. Still, this is a serious and gripping book, and I like the amount of detail utilized in describing each situation. This book is necessary in a world that's become a place where we depend on others to think for us and to be at our every bek and call. This book brings the message home that "nature will always win if you let it".
