Cool Aunt Nancy
The Aunt Nancy in this book is my kind of old lady -- spunky! When Old Man Trouble comes a-knockin' on her door, she doesn't let him get the best of her; no sir! She uses a little reverse psychology on him and the next thing you know, Old Man Trouble is leaving town. It is no fun causing people trouble if they appear to be enjoying it. This is one of my two most favorite children's books...My 6 and 9 year-old children love Aunt Nancy.... It is a great book for any child or child at heart!

This is a really cool book.
This book is great because whenever Old Man Trouble brings trouble to Aunt Nancy, she makes something good out of it.

Charming character who will make you smile!
Aunt Nancy is a bright and clever character who outsmarts Old Man Trouble every step of the way. She is a shining example of getting lemons in life and making lemonade. One of the funniest scenes is when Old Man Trouble causes Aunt Nancy to drop a glass which shatters in all directions only to have her respond by thanking him since the glass already had a crack! When Old Man Trouble finally learns that he cannot outwit this sunny dispositioned lady, he heads off for greener pastures to cause trouble elsewhere. The wonderful illustrations and whimsical dialog clearly enhance the readers' enjoyment of each character. I look forward to revisiting the charming Aunt Nancy in her next adventure with "Cousin Lazybones."

An icon of the unobtainable desires of our hearts
Poor old Prowlpuss. A sweetheart at the core, yet driven by hormones, he can't help himself. He indulges himself in his passions with abandon: alley fights and prowling, yowling for the love of a distant desire. The world conspires to keep him where he is, in the beloved company of his old Nellie Smith. Prowlpuss is an icon in our home, a beloved imaginary part of the childhood of our two girls, ages 6 and 5. We have read this book in the evenings on the big bed for several years now, and can nearly recite it from cover to cover. For us, hearing the words "Prowlpuss is cunning and wily and sly, a king size cat with one ear and one eye," evokes images of our family snuggled up together. Highly recommended for its look at forlorn resignation in the face of unquenched desire, and its quiet acceptance of all the good things we already have. Children with big ol' boy cats at home will especially enjoy a visit to this tom's world.

Prowlpuss is for all ages!
I bought this book for the little girl I babysit for's third birthday. I was attracted by the rich colours of the cover illustration, the roll-off-your-tongue title and being a cat person, the subject. When I opened and read the T.S. Eliotesque rhymes, I knew I had to have it. I read it aloud in the car. My eight year-old brother loved it. My forty year-old mother loved it. Thirteen year-old me adored it and didn't want to give it up. Now, more than a year later, ordering a copy as a Christmas present for my two year-old cousin Emily, I'm also getting a copy for myself.

The Anthropology of Evil

Another Excellent Contribution From David Parkin
Prof David Parkin (Prof of Anthropology, University of Oxford) once again displays his incredibly broad range of interests and impressive erudition in this edited volume, a cross-cultural anthropological examination of 'evil'.

Parkin's introduction is more than that, since he draws broadly on past scholarship and the contributions in this volume to investigate historically and cross culturally the notion of 'evil'. Rightly, he and the other contributors do not shy from theology. Thus, Mark Hobart's chapter is entitled 'Is God Evil?', and Donald Taylor's examination of evil in the Hebrew context is entitled 'Theological thoughts about evil'. Other contributions include, among others: 'Buddhism and evil' (Martin Southwold), 'Confucian confusion' (Brian Moeran), Parkin's own contribution on Muslims and non-Muslims Kenya.

This is an important work on the subject, not diminished in value by its age (about 15 years) and worthy of consideration by religious studies scholars and culturally conscious theologians. It represents good anthropology, i.e. that which looks beyond the sometimes too narrow confines of the discipline to broader topics such as this.

My kids LOVE this book!
Aunt Nancy and Cousin Lazybones was a BIG hit with my 4-year-old and my 3-year-old! Every page kept their attention with great illustrations, instantly developed characters, and a VERY funny story full of cute little phrases. "I'd be pleased as petunias to help," said Cousin Lazybones. They love to pretend they have a "hitch in their gitalongs" like good old Cousin Lazybones did!

I also stopped after every lazy thing Cousin Lazybones did and asked my children what SHOULD he have done? They knew right away! They really enjoyed this book, and I REALLY enjoyed reading aloud to them OVER and OVER!

A House Inside Out

Finding Extraordinary Wonders in an Ordinary House
At 54 Pavillion Road, home of the Dixon family, great adventurers lie underfoot and hidden in the walls. The deftly-drawn characters of Willy the earnest but short-sighted terrier, Nat the intrepid Pill Bug, his friend the spider, and Sam the show-off mouse and his long-suffering wife, Doris, their all-too human foibles and mishaps made me and my ten year old laugh out loud. Each chapter tells a different, but beguiling tale about one of the inhabitants of the inside-out house; major dramas of which the Dixons remain blithely unaware. Ostensibly a child's book, but one which relies refreshingly on everyday life for its subject and teaches no greater moral than, aren't we all silly, it makes for delightful inter-generational reading.

Great illustrations & story!
This children's book is fabulous! The illustrations are cute & kid friendly, but very ellaborate. The story is one that you won't mind reading over and over. And it teaches a moral as well. Check it out!

The best there is on Postmodernity
Trying to explain Postmodernity/Postmodernism is a tricky issue at the best of times. David Lyons makes it easy to understand and makes the very complex issues surrounding Postmodernity and Postmodernism very accessible and understandable. In Postmodernity, David Lyon provides an easy to grasp introduction to this highly controversial body of work and situates thinkers within and throughout the - excuse the pun - discourse of Postmodernity. My understanding of the Postmodern has grown in leaps and bounds has benefited greatly thanks to this book. I recommend it highly.

Sophie's Review
My Niece loved it. She wants to go onto reading all of the "Sopie's" series. She chose Sopie over the more recognized books like Pokeman and Mary Kate and Ashley series which she had been reading. Sophie seems to be a real person to her, a friend.

nice book series for reluctant readers
I bought these books on the recommendation of our book store. My second grader is a 'somewhat' reluctant reader yet she wanted to read chapter books. Many of the chapter book series were too difficult for her abilities but these books about Sophie are great!! And, my daughter especially enjoys reading them because they involve animals in the stories. I would like to see more chapter books like these available for young readers who are not quite up to the challenge of more difficult reading.

Highly recommend these books for any young reader!
