Doesn't Cover Everyone
My problem with this otherwise good reference book is that while those born between 1958 and 1964 are also considered baby boomers, no actors born during those years are included. Therefore, you will not see biographies of Tom Cruise, Eddie Murphy, Darryl Hannah, Cathy Moriaty, Michael J. Fox, etc. However, the ones that are included are just as interesting. Nice addition to a film buff's library.

Here is a book that tries to wrestle with our contemporary culture in light of religious faith and practical discernment. It is well researched yet accessible to lay persons. This book should be in every seminary and every pastor's library.

Hitting The Nail On The Head
This collection of messages complied by James L. Snyder on A.W. Tozer's theme of "Rut, Rot, or Revial: The Problem of Change and Breaking Out of the Status Quo", is a challenge to all Christians. Tozer presents to us the present condition of the church universal even though it was written more than 35 years ago. The message within this book is timeless as Tozer uses a wide variety scripture to support the decayed portion of the church. Tozer challenges all of us who label ourselves as Christian to wake up from our long sleep, or rut as he called it and press on to the higher calling of God. He makes it clear that change is the most difficult thing a church does and it comes at a price. He also shares the importance of the individual in the body of Christ and change is dependent on all the individuals changing so the church can change. The book flows well considering it is a compilation of sermons preached on this specific topic. If there is a downside, it would be some of the illustrations are outdated. Keeping in mind the messages were given back in the early 60s and it is sometimes hard for the modern reader to get the point. However, it is excellent reading for any Christian who wishes to deepen their spiritual life

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON JOAN DAVIS OR...
If you are looking for information on 5 great comedic attresses who haven't always gotten their due, then this book is for you. It has information and photos on Joan Davis, Martha Raye, Marjorie Main, Judy Canova and Phyllis Diller. I particularly got this book for the information about Joan Davis. I've found very little information about her or her "I Married Joan" series. Although, it didn't have too many details about that program, it did have a lot of information about her and her films, as well as 33 pages of photos of her. The rest of them are covered the same. If you can still get this book, if you are a fan of any of these "Slapstick Queens" you won't be disappointed in this book.

Excellent advice on pastoral leadership!
The title page describes this book's subject as "Church management" and "church work," but "leadership" is really the content of this book. It ought to be required reading for every seminary student, as the last book they read befre graduating. Seminaries today already tend to be poor at training leadership skills (as compared to research skills, preaching skills, theological skills, etc.), and the Bushfield's put down on paper some of the practical in's and out's of being a good pastor-leader. I don't know why this book hasn't gotten wider circulation (it was written in 1994, and in 2000 I am writing the first customer to review it), especially with the recent proliferation of leadership books in Christian bookstores. Long-time pastors may already know some of the content in this book from experience, and even new pastors may already intuitively grasp some of the principles contained herein. Nevertheless, it never hurts to see what is intuitively suspected written down on paper in black and white. The title is true: this book has nothing to do with theology or preaching but everything to do with maintaining a sound and effective relationship with your church. The advice is excellent, on such topics as "How much change to implement in your first year at a chruch," "When and when not to respond to a midnight telephone call," "When it's better to implement change without seeking congregational approval" (sometimes it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission), and the always important "How to avoid an affair with someone in your congregation, and what to do if you've already slipped." The book consists of sound advice on these and a variety of other topics, offering practical suggestions and case-studies to illustrate the potential dilemmas into which pastors can get themselves, if they're not careful. If you are a pastor who is iterested in knowing how to handle some of the "gray areas" of congregational life, this is an excellent read.

A wonderful genealogical and historical reference!!
Mr. Oubre has included over 700 pages of family lines, census records, militia rolls, histories and legends of the people who settled and built the original town known as Vacherie, Louisiana. It is a monumental work that has added considerably to my passion to learn from whom and where I come. The book includes (among many others) histories of the Amedee, Becnel, Brazen, Falgoust, Folse, Gravois, Loup, Ockman, Oubre, Remondet, Sevin, Simon, Stein and Webre families of the German Coast area of Louisiana.

Dive into the Divas
Marvelous, darling. That's not a diva talking, but this reviewer giving his assessment of Hollywood Diva's: The Good, the Bad and the Fabulous, the latest from the industrious James Robert Parish. We learn that Tallulah once slept with the bride and the groom, Whitney's thoughts on being a star, and Lucille's problems with Desi, among many things. There's also fascinating material on Sharon, Jennifer, Clara and many more of the ladies we love to love and love to ridicule. As usual, Parish has an uncanny knack for selecting just the right information and the right amount of information to keep the reader enthralled. His brief bios are packed with fascinating and telling material. I was struck by the number of divas that escaped a miserable upbringing by heading to Hollywood. Once there, they achieved fame and glory, but often at a steep price. Did they bring on their disasters themselves? In many cases, yes, but we adore them anyway. Even casual followers of the world of film will find it hard to put down this book. You will want to read about all these women, not just the really big stars. The stories resonate with all of us, whether we are divas, whether we adore divas, or whether we want nothing to do with divas.

Diva101
For those of you who've always wondered what made some female performers stars, and others divas, there's no better way to learn than to read the latest book by James Robert Parish, "Hollywood Divas." In it, you'll learn that often, success leads to excess, whether in matters of conspicuous consumption, outrageous public behavior, or in Hollywood's favorite game, musical beds. A wittily wicked book by a veteran
show business chronicler, it is definitely for those with enquiring minds who want to know.

Good and Fabulous -- no "Bad" here
James Robert Parish, the author of The RKO Gals and The Fox Girls, has now written a witty and remarkably informative new book about 70 major "Divas" of the entertainment world. The most surprising thing about this book is that it contains not only current idols like Madonna and Jennifer Lopez, and perennial idols like Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland, but also some rather obscure (in terms of early 21sts century) idols, including Kay Francis, Mae Murray, and Greer Garson. Yes, this book covers the whole gamut, from Theda Bara to Britney Spears. The quotes are fantastic, the photos are great, and the information is fabulous. Highly recommended.

Packs A Punch
For 30 years, Parish has been a film historian extraordinaire. . . and he just keeps getting better. Except for hardcore fans, Jet Li remains a martial artist about whom little is really known in this country, but Parish, as always, delivers the goods - from Li's humble beinnings to his status as a reigning and legitimate international film star. Along the way, Parish examines the infrastructure of the Hong Kong, Chinese, and Hollywood film industries, illustrating how each has impacted the ascendancy of Li, both as a star and as a man. A must read for any fan. . . and a good, informative read for anyone else.

Not Just Another Kung fu Star
This is a fascinating look at, not just an action star, but at the prolific Chinese and Hong Kong film industries. Through the life of Jet Li, we see his rise through this colorful industry. There is also a fascinating look at his boyhood in a China dominated by Mae Zedong. Even if you are not a martial arts movie fan, this is an enjoyable book. It is very well researched, including a background on Wushu, the form of martial arts practiced by Jet Li. There are many excellent photos and a complete filmograghy. So read the book, then hit the video store and see some movies that are often overlooked or relegated to the b-movie bins.

New Li bio has something for everyone
In typical Parish fashion, a well researched bio of film star Jet Li. The narrative traces the young Li from his humble childhood that was focused on wushu training, through the emerging Hong Kong martial arts film industry, and ending with the international star status Li has attained. The book also provides keen insight into the growth of the martial arts film genre and Li's personal and professional growth as an actor. A good read for anyone interested in Jet Li's career, or the history of the martial arts film in general.
