Handbook of Radical Vinyl Polymerization (Plastics Engineering)
Published in Hardcover by Marcel Dekker (12 May, 1998)
Authors: Munmaya K. Mishra and Yusuf Yagci
Amazon base price: $185.00
Used price: $140.00

Free radical polymerization is an important industrial process. Both editors have written extensively in the field of polymer science, Dr. Mishra as an industrial research scientist and Dr. Yagci as an academic researcher.

The Handbook of Radical Vinyl Polymerization provides information on the physical and organic chemistry of radical vinyl polymerization. The first three chapters are an introduction to the basic principles of radical vinyl polymerization. Chapters four through ten discuss the radical initiators and mechanisms including recent advances in the field such as living polymerization. Chapter eleven describes a number of the major industrial processes that utilize radical vinyl polymerization. The final chapter provides data and structures for the industrial researcher. The book contains nearly1,500 references and numerous tables and drawings.

The Handbook of Radical Vinyl Polymerization should be useful for organic chemists and researchers working in the area of polymer science. It is a good combination of the practical information used by industrial researchers and the more theoretical knowledge needed by members of the academic community. It can serve as reference work for researchers or as an overview of radical vinyl polymerization. It is recommended

The Holy Qur'an

Two different versions of this translation
Reviewing this book is difficult because there aretwo distinguishable versions. The hardcover version from International Book Center in Troy, MI, could be the version that uses the word God to translate the Arabic word Allah (as Ali intended) and retainsAli's balanced treatment of various Islamic sects. The other version of this book contains the phrase"revised and edited" on the cover, and, more than a review, this is a suggestion that if these words appear on the cover or title page, book buyers ought to be toldbecause it may alter their interest in the book. Ali's book is not one of the best, it is the best English translation of the Quran

Islamic Awakening Between Rejection and Extremism (Issues of Islamic Thought Ser .: No. 2)
Published in Paperback by United Arab Bureau (1987)
Author: Yusuf Al Qaradawi
Amazon base price: $6.50

Balanced view for the current Islamic movement.
This is an excellent book. It explains the state of the current islamic movement and shows two different reactions to it, rejection and extremism. Both reactions come from misunderstandings of the basic principles of Islam, like Jihad for example. It is a must-read book for anyone who is interested in understanding the Islamic movements or who have decided to work for Islam.

A must if you're interested in the medieval Middle East
I read this in a university library and found it so engrossing and useful that I needed a copy of my own. An almanac initally sounds very dull, but Varisco's extensive commentary provides so many details on so many subjects, its simply amazing. It's not simply about science or even agriculture, it also contains a great deal of anthropolgical data that you don't find in other similar works. All too frequently, books dealing with the past dwell on the history, rather than the reality of the time. This work really captures the feel of the time period with its lavish details and research. Much of it could really qualify as trivia, but that's really what makes it such a wonderful piece of work, as it isn't just concerned with the big issues of the time, but with what every man knew. If you're at all interested in what the period was like, beyond simple history, this is a great book. It's largely concerned with things related to agriculture as it's a very protracted translation and explanation of an almanac, so covers crops, the weather (a topic everyone's always discussed, past or present), health, astronomy, sex, the environmental, and many things in between. This presents a real portrait of the time period beyond what the title implies. This is a very thorough yet wide ranging work. It's very light on religion, but there's scores of books on medieval Islam, so this is not a great flaw. This is not quite like any other book you'll find on the period and thus why it is so great.

Translation
I found this translation to be the best in content, presentation and understanding for those who are of the Islamic Faith and those who are studying Islam. Being written in English on one side and Arabic on the other side of each page, it is easy to follow the structure with clarity. It is written in clear, consise, and lovely letterings and includes a vast amount of knowledge in the footnotes etc. The book presents itself beautifully as a spiritual submission to society as a whole and exudes a certain devotion that the writer must have had when completing this labor of love.

Perfect for the beginner
As a non-Muslim who teaches courses in world religions and mysticism, I find this translation of the Qur'an the most helpful to those persons who want to read the holy book of Islam. 'Abdullah Yusuf 'Ali's translation is both clear and beautiful, and his near verse-by-verse commentary is nonintrusive and extremely useful to the beginner. The commentary not only explains the context of individual verses but also serves as a concordance. Moreover, each surah (chapter) is prefaced by an informative summary that helps orient the reader. Finally, the whole has an extremely comprehensive index of almost thirty pages.

I can't recommend a better edition of the Qur'an to those of us who are non-Muslims but who wish to know more about Islam.

Incredibly useful and educational
This book is valuable for anyone who wants to know more about the Qur'an. This text will give Muslims a deeper knowledge of their scripture, and it will give non-Muslims like myself a more informed introduction to the Qur'an. Abdullah Yusuf Ali did a marvellous work: the prefaces are informative, the translation is far more poetic than most English versions, and the commentary notes are practical and enlightening. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand the Qur'an.

fascinating social commentary
"The Cheapest Nights" is a collection of short stories written by the famous Yussuf Idriss. The stories deal with various aspects of Egyptian life in primarily rural communities. One of the main themes is greed and the way it distorts individuals. While some of his stories dwell on cruelty and weakness, Idriss also has stories that illustrate the human capacity for tenderness and forgiveness. Overall, the short stories in this book provide a kaleidoscope of images and characters that left me wanting to read more.

Lives To Care About
With a few short lines or several words, Yusuf Idris creates people that we recognize and people we care about. Right at the beginning of each story, you immediatly are concerned about each of the well rounded characters, their lives and future. They are strugling with life. These are people who have faults, goodness, dispare and hope. I have recommended this book to many people and everyone has enjoyed it. Yusuf Idris is a great storyteller deserving a wider audience. His tales are human tales told/drawn with a greater skill than many of the well known authors writing today.

War in the Land of Egypt

Author: Yusuf Al-Qaid
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

A sad tale of of a nation and of despair
A beautifully crafted fiction that illustrates in a vivid way much of Egypt social ills and its charms. Yusuf Al-Qa'id uses a very creative approach and highly unusual one in Egyptian novels to tell the story of a substitution of a poor peasant for the wealthy son of the village mayor. The story takes place in 1973, at a time when conscription lasted for indefinite periods of time and only few years after humiliation of the Egyptian military in 1967. Six different storytellers reveal the details of the story to us from very different perspectives with highly varying levels of empathy with the main character.

Al Quid uses extensive symbolism in the story; none of the characters have names except for the main character who was given an unusual generic first name "the Egyptian". Oppressive social pressures, slaving for family status and appearances, corruption a patriarchal tyranny, city indifference, rich vs poor, gap of opportunity, oppression of authority, helplessness of the common and indeed of all Egyptians are all the strong and recurring themes throughout the book. The symbolism is generally not subtle and at times it feels like the author has tried to cover more social ills than anyone story can do justice. The story is too gripping to lose the reader in the midst of the litany of Egypt's social ills.

While the six different story tellers help round out a more complete picture of the central sad tale as a whole, much of the story and many of the characters came across one dimensional, too cardboard like the good, the bad, the greedy, the conscientious, the helpless and so forth. Somehow, to me, it felt something was lacking despite the six different perspectives. All six storytellers painted the one vision the Al Qaid had, they told us different parts of the story, only in few cases did they really show us very different perspectives. While I have immensely enjoyed this novel, this one missing aspect detracted from it for me. The multiple storytellers is such an ideal way to portray more well rounded characters but was not fully utilized.

An Outstanding Writer and a Novel Worth Reading
After I read this book to an "unknown" author, it became clear to me why it was selected by the "Emerging Voices International Book Series" to be translated and introduced to the American reader. This novel takes place in Egypt during the 1973 war, where the son of a poor watch-man was coerced to send his son to the front instead of the son of a rich 'umda' or village chief. Although it takes place in a rural Egyptian village, yet it touches on issues that have no borders. It stimulates the reader to think deep inside about one's own beliefs on issues such as justice, social class and differences between the rich and the poor, the "haves" and the "have-nots". I was quite impressed by the innovative technique that the author has chosen to write his novel. The characters of the novel are also the narrators of the story. They are telling their sides of the story by talking directly to the reader, yet in a manner that maintains the fluency and continuity of the events without any repetition. The author deliberately omitted giving names to any of the characters, with the exception of the main character, a young man named "Masri" or the Egyptian, which symbolized the (Egyptian) people. This book cannot be described in a brief review effortlessly, somehow you must read it to get its full effect and meaning. Although it is written in a simple manner, yet I perceive it to be rather sophisticated invloving deep thought from the writer to reflect deeper meanings. Ther were a few typos in the text, but these did not take away from this wonderful novel, but clearly would have been better without. I believe that anyone who will read this book will appreciate an outstanding writer and an innovative novel.
