Excellent explanation of a tough subject
I have found Elements of a Christian Worldview to be an insightful piece of literature. With such a rare topic, this should be on every person's list who is trying to find their "place in this world." I bought for a class and decided to make it part of my permanent library. I have taken classes with Dr. Michael Palmer and he is an insightful man full of knowledge.

Underriver : Samuel Palmer's Golden Valley

Tolkien's Shire before Tolkien
Samuel Palmer, disciple of William Blake, created his visionary masterpieces in his twenties -- see the Colin Harrison book for some of these glimpses of an earthly Paradise. In his later years in Shoreham, his artwork is more Tolkienian than Paradisal. See if you don't think some of these pictures are visual correlates of Tolkien's descriptions. The booklet is, I am sure, a work of love by admirers of Palmer's work who live in or near the Kent where Palmer created so many wonderful works in so few years.

Good Choice
As an experienced instructor, I caution use of this book by colleges who are utilizing instructors not completely familiar with the material.

There are numerous question and answer sets that are incorrect, and these incorrect answers may be passed on to the students. There are several technical descriptions which are inaccurate as well.

At this point in the game, many of the third party "Microsoft Approved Study Guides" contain technically incorrect material. Of all those I have used and reviewed however, the Course Technology series is the best currently available.

Easy To Read and Very Informative
I haven't taken the exam yet, but I used this book for self study. I knew nothing about networks until I read this book. I learned a lot from it.

Great book.
Great book. Easy to underdstand. Has subnotes and pointers. This book is used at my school and it is by far the best book I've read yet. I highly suggest it. Certain things may be slightly out of date, but the ideas are right.

This Is For General Microsoft Knowledge
I originally meant to buy Exam Cram not Exam Prep. When using Exam Prep I thought it did not prepare me for the tests. I have used one of the Exam Cram books for TCP/IP and thought it prepared me quite well. If your looking to take your MCSE test buy EXAM CRAM not Exam Prep.

Excellent !!!
I've been teaching the MCSE courses and on of my students brought the Exam Crams and Exam Prep books in the class, asked me to read and rate them. After reading through these books, I found these books are just excellent. They are full of technical stuffs, written in real English, and in a readable manner. I have even "talked" to one of the authors of the book as well (and his name is Ed). Ed was expert in the field and he was very fun to" talk" to. I definitely would recommend the books to all my students, friends.

shallow coverage - 700+ pages should have done a better job
This book covers a lot of topics - but lacks in-depth explanation on many important stuffs. I tried to reference the book to help me with some Excel automation. However, the 40 Excel pages in the book helps only a little. Not a single word on 'charts', poor presentation on 'Range', no mention of Excel built-in functions... MS user's guide or online help is much better. The coverage on other parts look just like the Excel.

Gives you a taste of what you can do with VBA
This book shows at a very high-level, what you can do with VBA in all of those MS Office applications.

The only problem with this book is that every piece of information can be gathered from MSDN.

If you are not sure what VBA is, or how you can use other Microsoft Products in you Visual Basic projects, then get this book. It will be a real eye-opener.

Not Bad for a broad overview
This book is a good starting point before you go out and buy that 2 inch thick book on your individual office component. This book does not go into advanced concepts, it is moreover a guide to Office's object model. I felt that it left many important concepts out. The selection of what was important in Excel was sporadically helpful. I started out with this book, but needed additional references to drill into the specifics. I've *never* accessed data the way they say to in Access, nor would I. There is a discussion section in the back with suggestions on how to use the Office suite to solve problems, but no specifics.

Still typos and bad screen prints in 2nd edition!
The screen prints in this book are so poorly reproduced as to be completely unreadable and there are many, many typos. I am taking a class using this book as a text, and I spend more time trying to figure out what the typos are in the commands than I do learning how to use the software. I sent an email to the publisher regarding the fact that the screen prints, which are white characters of low resolution on a dark background, are nearly invisible; I received a reply that said they were sorry I was having trouble reading the graphics - nothing else - no apology - no statement that this is a recognized problem they would correct in a subsequent edition.

My advice - find a book you can read that you won't have to waste your time proofreading and leave this one on the shelf!

Revised Edition .... Much Better
I too was leery of using this textbook in a Unix workshop that I sometimes teach for a graduate program at IUPUI. After reading the negative comments I contacted Course Technology and tracked down the editor for this title. She admitted that there were some serious typos which made the exercises difficult to complete successfully. She told me that they had hired a Linux expert to re-edit the book and it would hopefully be available in time for my class the summer of 2001. It was ready in time and it worked very well for my class. BE AWARE that the ISBN number wasn't changed and the only indication that you have the revised version is the word UPDATED in a gold star in the upper right side of the text cover. Instructors can get a CD with solution files, Powerpoint slides, Test Manager, and an Electronic Instructors Manual. I would agree that perhaps less GUI content and more of the omitted topics noted in other reviews would make this a 5-star textbook.

Good place to start
For users who need to get a good fundamental base of UNIX on limted resources, this is an excellent book. Because LINUX is free and can run on any intel-based machine, it is an excellent platform for students to discover the basics and learn to appreciate UNIX. This book follows a logical sequence to that end and hits on all fundamental skills, explaining things without assuming nor over-explaining.

This guide will not lead to certification on it's own, but it will provide a solid foundation to build upon. After completing this guide, I consider myself a competent and confident UNIX user.

The Danish Notebook
Published in Paperback by Avec Books (2000)
Authors: Michael Palmer and Jens Birkemose
Amazon base price: $9.95
Used price: $8.95

Nice, but slight.
Holding The Danish Notebook in your hands, it feels so slight, like it will turn, at any second, into dust. The contents do not counter this impression. As always, Palmer (perhaps my favorite living poet) delights and concerns, dazzles and disrupts, but this feels like an early draft of something that may or may not cohere into something "weightier" later. I'd be much more interested in a big ol' collection of his journal entries to drown in, as opposed to this (admittedly interesting) puddle.

Excellent on Freud, Not so hot on Jung
The book provides a very informative overview of Freud's psychology.

The philosophical discussion is hardly in depth, for instance, the debate about how empirical Freud is was hardly touched upon.

He does examine in detail Freud's criticisms of religion. The author's reply to Freud's criticisms is devastating.

I found it interesting to learn that Freud was a Lamarckian. According to this book, Freud felt that the genetic theory of inheritance hadn't caught up to his theories. Science knew then and it certainly knows now that psychic trauma cannot be inherited. Freud's theory of iherited guilt feelings resembles in a way Augustine's theory of inherited Original Sin.

The Jung section was interesting but ultimately unsatisfying. He views Jung as a Berkleyian or Kantian idealist reducing everything to experience. I don't think this is fair to Jung. Jung's thought is not so one-dimensional.

My take on Jung is that the spiritual quest is fundamental and that the quest is mythic in scope. The occasional Berkelyian or Kantian window dressing Jung gives his quest are inconsequential and not important to Jung's thoughts. I can understand why those who would like to pigeon-hole Jung latch on to this aspect of his thought, but it is like dwelling on the frame of the Mona Lisa and forgetting about the content of the picture.

Jung regarded himself as trying to pursue a middle way in spirtual matters, not literal like the fundamentalists or reductionist like Freud or 19th century materialists. The author's arguments that Jung failed in this endeavor are not entirely convincing.

There are books that are more sympathetic to Jung and also better books in my opinion. I highly recommend -- Transformation of the God-Image by Edward F. Edinger and Jung and Christianity: the Challenge of Reconciliation by Wallace B. Clift. Wallace B. Clift is very critical of Jung's views that God has a dark side but is also very informative.

Having said all this; I must say Palmer's book was a very enjoyable read, a real page-turner in fact which is rare for a philosophy book, written extremely well and with great clarity.

yuk.
One of the worst. . . a big waste of your time. We convinced our dept. to drop both this book and Ed Tittel's.

Straight-forward answers
This was a very comprehensive book. It was easy to follow and the answers to the chapter reviews were easy to pull from the chapter. I did not have to read, and reread, and reread the chapter looking for a non-existent answer, as I have had to do in some books in the MCSE track. I only wish the textbooks that are being used at my school were all written by this author.

Students have loved it for Two Years Now!
I have been an Administrator in this industry for several years and have used various books for very tasks. I have been teaching for three years and my students and I have found this book to be the best written for the classroom. My students have said "thank you" for choosing this book for two years running now. I look forward to the series on 2000 Server.
