My thanks to Gordon Padwick. Integrated Office Application lifted the veil from my eyes and I finally understood how to control one MS Office application from another. It has great, practical examples of how to control Excel from Access, Access from Excel, Excel from Word, etc. Learning about CopyFromRecordset (an Excel Range method) was enough to justify purchase of this book! I grok it now.

I ordered this book expecting a lot of computer jargon that I would not understand. I am new to programming and this book really helped me learn a few things about VB5 and web development. The instructions were very informative and really explained how everything works. There were lessons to follow that made everything easier for me. The CD that comes with the book was very helpful and made the location of the code in the book easily accessible for reference. I would recommend this book to anyone learning VB5 and web development.

Jackson - Fielder 1870 - 2000 is a comparison of photographs of Colorado, showing the changes that have occurred geographically and developmentally over the past century. William Henry Jackson took pictures at the end of the 19th century. John Fielder returned to the exact locations a hundred years later to capture the similarities and differences that have taken place. The book is fascinating and nostalgic not only to Coloradans, but to historians, geologists, environmentalists, as well as anyone who just loves to view the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains and the surrounding foothills. I highly recommend this book for hours of enjoyment.

This is a spectacular book! Being a Colorado native I was facinated with the concept of "then and now" photos, looking closely for all changes in natural and man made landscape. I had hoped for a little more front range material, but totally enjoyed the wonderful photo art work Fielder is known for in our beautiful state. My entire family has spent hours viewing the pages. I own several other similar books on Colorado. This is most definitely a star addition to the collection.

A fourth generation Coloradoan, I can appreciate the time and patience it must have taken for John Fielder to assemble this photo archive. Who knows if Jackson left exact notes as to where he was standing when he composed his shots? It looks as if Fielder had taken great pains to get the shot from the same or similar vantage point as Jackson. It was great to see that some aspects remained the same, and the changes were interesting too. My sister had her name on a waiting list for three months before she was able to purchase this book for me, and I'm very glad she did. If the publisher ever gets more, the next one is for my sis. It's a great book for our public libraries, too. What's with the shortage?

The synopsis reads:

"This book is a developer's handbook designed to take the intermediate to advanced level Visual FoxPro developer right to the heart of developing a real live application."

I wish I had read these words more carefully before my purchase. Unfortunately, I bought the book on another's advice. If you are "intermediate to advanced level," you have probably already developed a "real live application." And having done so, you have already learned just about everything in this book.

The book is really a standard text on VFP's basic features. As such, it is decent, certainly better than the Microsoft documentation. The foundation classes included perhaps take it a step higher; they are good learning tools for a beginner or intermediate who has never put together a complete application in FoxPro. I found nothing in the text, however (and I read through most of it) that I would say is distinctive to the topic of "enterprise development". If you have an application or two under your belt, even in VFP 3.0, and you're looking to go to the next level, this book has nothing for you.

Contents of the book are purely from Visual Foxpro programmer's perspective and experiences. I am using the book whenever I do Visual Foxpro training on our company because it has comprehensive examples i.e. API routines, OLE connectivity, and Basic Foundation Classes. I also like the Client/Server application development the way it was discussed.

I liked their approach and examples. It includes VFP Foundation Classes in the CD-ROM that can get you working right away.

It is not a basic book for the very beginner. You should at least be a little familiar with the previous (pre Visual) Foxpro way of doing things. It contains the following Sections:

- Analysis and Design. Establishing development standards.
- Object and Coding Development. OOP. Debugging. Multi-User development.
- Database Development. Creating a database and SQL.
- Application Deployment. Clients/Server. VFP and Internet applications. Distributing VFP applications.


I highly recommend this book for any serious VFP5 programmer

The opening paragraph of chapter 1 reads as follows:

"There are many ways to distinguish a good software development project from a mediocre one. You can look at the appearance of the screens, the way the application behaves, the structure of the underlying tables, or the source code itself. Each of these items tells you something about the developers who built it."

The finished application, World Wide Shoes, which is included on the CD and purported to be the end result of working through the exercises in this book, speaks volumes about the author and the publisher. The application is amateurish and of poor quality. It represents few of the development standards outlined in the book.

I get the feeling the author has studied programming theory, but has done very little application development.

Not since the days when Mike Brachman was writing on integrating FoxPro and the Windows API has there been such a clear and concise text. This book as loads of great examples, and most importantly, discusses how to pass structures to Windows API functions that require those type of parameters.

This book is a must for any serious Visual FoxPro Developer. Hopefully, the tradition of excellence will continue with a version 7.0 of this book in the future.

This is a great book for people that are already familiar with the Visual FoxPro environment. It provides a no bull approach to using Visual FoxPro for real. It has great coverage of the Windows API and a great set of libraries for Microsoft Office. If you want to learn how to use the advanced features of VFP quickly then this book is for you.

For a book to be called VB6 for Web Developement I would have thought it would have extensive coverage of the new VB6 IIS application project. If your looking for information on IIS apps look elswhere.

This is the book I was looking for. A walk thru example is the way I like to learn. The book walks you through four major projects with database connections via the Web.

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I think it went too much into discussing development methodology.

Compliments to the authors. I've looked long for a practical book that links VB to web site development. This one fills the bill. I recommend it highly. Thanks to the authors for an accessible book that is not micky-mouse.
