reads like an "info-mercial",
i liked the book and found the information in it very interesting but i felt as if the author was trying to "sell" melatonin as opposed to "selling" his research. this made me feel uncomfortable and suspicious much the same way an info-mercial does when over excited people try and convince you about "revolutionary" discoveries

Based on research
I read this work, the original medical research on which it was based (much of it available on links through the National Library of Medicine and Medline), and other works on this topic. The authors are clearly informed advocates who believe passionately in their work--work supported by research significant in its depth and scope. Please do not let "tone" issues deter you from reading a substantive and highly accessible medical work.

The Miracle
"The Melatonin Miracle" is such a fantastic book that I read it in one night only. Despite my fatigue I just couldn't stop reading until I reached the last page. The discovery of our aging clock and how melatonine can influence it, is undoubtedly a breakthrough, which will lead to many more. An uncle of mine, who is 65, started to take Melatonin and his skin became smoother and softer that I was flabbergasted, his sleep was more profound and relaxed and he stopped going to the toilet during the night. I can only say that this book was worth its money !

Not recommended
Not recommended for purchase, especially by academic libraries (this suggestion is from a holder of a 1985 Master of Library Science degree, University of Illinois). I admit that I'd have really enjoyed browsing in this book when I was a junior high school student, though.

Many readers who know a bit about the Inklings, and, certainly, scholars, will not find the book to be satisfactory, whether as regards style or as regards content. There are various usage and even spelling errors that should have been caught in the editing process. There are curious inclusions -- satanist Aleister Crowley? John Macgowan(1726-80), a Baptist minister, who wrote a book the authors think resembles Lewis's The Screwtape Letters -- though they don't think Lewis ever read it? It's weird to include entries such as these, and then leave out people such as Pauline Baynes, whose artwork won raves from Tolkien (she illustrated three of his books in his lifetime) and Lewis (she illustrated all seven of the Chronicles of Narnia)!

The authors really deserve censure for neglecting to discuss the major controversy in Lewis scholarship of the last fifteen years, the possibility of forgeries being offered as unpublished works by CSL. No responsible scholar would "stonewall" such an issue! One cannot understand why their bibliography, while listing some items twice, omits some very important books, such as Scull and Hammond's book on Tolkien's artwork, or Charles Williams's Outlines of Romantic Theology.

I wouldn't have bought this book if I'd known how unsatisfactory it would prove to be when I'd got it.

Highy Recommended
I gave this Colin Duriez and David Porter's book a five because it does exactly what it set out to do: give readers an excellent overview of The Inklings relationship.
I have collected, read and studied the works of C. S. Lewis for the past 30 years. This book filled an empty niche in my collection as it is a clear and concise handbook of the most fascinating group of friends known as The Inklings and the complex elements of the lives they brought to their relationship.
I have been pleased to know and enjoy the work David Porter, one of the authors. His research and that of Colin Duriez is meticulous. They have included an excellent bibiography, including Charles Williams' _Outline of Romantic Theology_ and other important works of The Inklings which will keep you reading and learning about The Inklings for a lifetime. At the end of each article further reading is listed. Pauline Baines, the great illustrator, is mentioned in the Narnia chapter. The entry on Aleister Crowley is much appreciated by those Lewis lovers who also read and enjoy the works of Charles Williams. The style of the book is delighful as authors often include interesting anecdotes and quotes. The book is not overly pedantic, or ostentatiously intellectual. _The Inklings Handbook_ is a must read for those who would begin to learn about the amazing alchemy of The Inklings.
You will find in this book much that is relevant in the 21st century about the spirited exchange of ideas- The Inklings as a model for living with great enthusiasm and vitality.

Plato: The Great Philosophers (The Great Philosophers Series)

A Succinct and Useful Introduction to Plato
Alfred North Whitehead, if he is remembered for nothing else, will always be remembered for his oft-quoted statement that the history of Western philosophy consists of nothing more than "a series of footnotes to Plato." In this small book (it has only fifty-seven pages of text, including footnotes and bibliography), Bernard Williams provides a succinct and useful introduction to Plato's thought and philosophical method.

Plato is the earliest Western philosopher for whom we have a complete set of texts. Plato is also, perhaps, the earliest philosopher to examine the full range of philosophical questions. Using the dialogic method, Plato explored questions of truth, beauty, immortality, ethics, and love. He contemplated the "mind-body" problem and, in his master work, "The Republic", sought to establish a sound foundation for the Greek polis. However, while Plato's range was extensive, his dialogic method created open texts, sometimes internally contradictory and always subject to interpretation. Plato adumbrated, in other words, a set of philosophic questions and a method which provided a fertile beginning for Western metaphysics.

Professor Williams effectively uses snippets of Plato's dialogues to illustrate Plato's philosophical method, as well as the uncertain conclusions, the "openness", of Plato's texts. Rather than approaching Plato as a systematic philosopher with fixed views, Williams quite accurately notes that "Plato seems to have thought that the final significance of philosophy for one's life does not lie in anything that could be embodied in its findings, but emerges, rather, from its activities." Adhering to that notion, this little book provides a wonderful way, particularly for the initiate to Plato (I think, here, particularly of the high school student exploring Philosophy for the first time), to begin grappling with timeless questions.

Intro to Plato
This book comes in at a little under 50 pages (45), and like Anthony Gottlieb with "Socrates," Bernard Williams is able to cover quite a lot of ground in that short space. Because of the limits imposed by its brevity, there is not much focus on Plato's personal life, or the context within which his ideas were born. Instead there is an excellent exploration of Plato's writings that weaves through his texts and gives the reader an idea for how to approach his works. It is not meant to be a complete and thorough analysis, but as an introduction or accompaniment to Plato's dialogues, it is a valuable book(let).

Pretty good, but watch out for the errors
I read this book cover to cover and found that it only provided me with 80% of what I need to know for the exam. The chapters on ActiveX technology were poorly written. The other chapters were better. I guess having multiple authors will lead to the inconsistency. These guys should have proof read each other's work. The test CD was soooooo disappointing. Some test questions were poorly worded and about 20% of the answers were incorrect. i'm sure that you'll be frustrated when you work with the practice test. Don't forget to download the errata.txt file. My final advice is to supplement this book with something else. Aside from the CD, it's still a decent book with good information. However, you need other references to fill the gap. I was able to use the Mastering VB5 CD from Microsoft and the VB Online Help file. Well, the good news is that i was able to pass the exam this morning with a score of 915. Good luck to you!

Easy to learn
It is a good book to passing the exam and i feel good by taking this book and i am looking for other books from new riders

Good book with cool computer graded practice test.
The best thing about this book is the CD that comes with it. The computer graded test are great and help you locate your trouble areas. It's not going to show the exact questions that will be on your particular test (i.e. cheat). The practice exams (and flashcard test)will test your readiness to take the MCSD Visual Basic 5 certification exam offered by ICCP. Even if your not going to take the test the book and computer aided testing software give all Visual Basic programmers strict coding guidlines. You won't just learn how to pass the test you'll also learn good coding techniques. I wouldn't rely solely on just this book as your only source/means to pass the test, you'll have to work very hard to become certified in any worthwhile field. If more books came with test like these you can mark me down as a potential buyer.

Still just a piece of the picture
This book has been informative in that I have learned a great deal about the political and militaristic problems Washington endured during America's push for independence. I have a feeling that, without Washington's sacrifice, America as we know it probably wouldn't occur. However, I also think of the famous quote attributed to Napoleon that "History is the myth men choose to believe." While Thomas Paine wrote about independence for the colonies, he also tore into the concept of slavery as immoral, so it wasn't as if no one was talking about this issue. If Washington would have "stepped up" and abolished slavery then and there, so that all men (and women) were truly created equal, as I said before, America might not be here. It was a politically divided and bankrupt country. I don't consider those reasons justification for sacrificing another person's human rights. The racial problems we face today stem from a lack of identity stolen from a stolen people

who did much of the work to build this country in its early days and, while the opprtunity was there, given nothing in return. "Patriot Sage" is an excellent insight into many aspects of Washington's life of which I was ignorant (like his influence on the Constitutional Convention) Sadly, some of its essays are too right-wing, to the point of Clinton bashing. What modern era president could really live up to the accomplishments of the one who defined the job's parameters ? One essay focuses on the moral symbolism of Washington now devoid in today's presidents, while another openly admits he gambled and sought prostitutes. To be read overall with some perspective.

Fair review of material
This book is a good supplement to other study guides but it is by no means complete. Overall, it covers a lot of different points, sometimes in detail, but never thoroughly. The questions are more difficult and detailed than many study guide practice test. The main problem with the book is that it wastes a lot of paper on so-called explanations. For the most part, the explanation of a test question/answer is a restatement of the question and answer into a declarative sentence with no futher explanation. The format of short tests followed by review really helps to point to where more study is needed and to reinforce concepts. But the explanation section either needs to be expanded to include actual explanations, or be removed from the book altogether.

Good but not good enough
This book helps review concepts for the exam but does not help AT ALL with the scenario based questions which form most of the test. It certainly doesn't hurt, but it won't get you through without other sources to practice with

Good for exam prep
I just pass 70-176. This book help me prepare for the test. It was a good idea to combine in the same book two exams (70-175 & 70-176). This way I discover that the two exams seems to cover the same objectives (like 60% of both exams is dealing with the same stuff - COM & ActiveX, configure VB6 IDE, package&deployment, logical&physical design, creating data services and testing the solution).

This is not a book for learning but is a good prepare book for the exam even if I didn't find any question from book in the real test.

Mistakes and Mistakes everywhere
I wonder how Microsoft approved this book. This book consists of Errors everywhere. There are number of errors in text too not to mention about errors in practise Tests. In short this book is a compilation of errors.

Great guide to help you review and pass the exam!
There are some errors in the answers to the questions, but it really keeps you sharp and on your toes. The text really helps you review each section needed to pass the exam, then quizzes you on the section. Use as a supplement to review and prepare for the exam or as an additional reference for learning SQL.

Gives a direction buty not the destination
Good in the sense that it covers all the subjects in a proper manner but full of errors and wrong match of answers

This is beyond doubt the worst written book I have ever read. An eleven year old essayist could be expected to have a more coherent thought pattern.
