John Piper and Stained Glass

Excellent gathering of Piper's stained glass
The author places John Piper and his work into the historical continuum of stained glass so that we appreciate the great contribution he has made in design, creative advance and the fearless use of modern materials. She does not assume technical knowledge on the reader's part and so gives clear descriptions of processes and materials. The net outcome of the book is to give Piper the recognition he deserves not only as a stained-glass artist but also as one of the leading - if comparatively under-rated - English artists of the 20th century. The book is profusely illustrated in colour the only let-down being the quality of some of the photographs, too many are either not sharp or over-exposed. Thus a rating of 7.

Interesting, mostly for nebraska followers
Interesting self portrait of one of the most successfull coaches in college football. Written in response to his famous "going for two" decisiom in the 1984 Orange Bowl which cost him his first title, and by his subsequent diagnosis and treatment of heart disease the following year. Good insights into why the "go for two" decision was made, his early life, and entrance into coaching. Also covers his near decision to leave for Colorado in the 70's as well as a little bit about his relationship with some of the players including one time quarteback and now assistant coach Turner Gill. Finishes about 1985. Discusses his faith and how it gives him perspective on the vagaries of a coaching career. Suffers somewhat from his natural shyness and therefore is a little superficial and gives the impression that he lacks warmth and empathy, which if you read "On Solid Ground" is clearly not the case. Would have given 5 stars if it was of more general interest, or if it would have been more personal like "On Solid Ground".

Origin of German Tragic Drama
Published in Paperback by Verso (1996)
Authors: Walter Benjamin, John Osborne, and George Steiner
Amazon base price: $19.00
Used price: $41.17
Average review score:

Essential reading for students of critical theory
While it concerns baroque Trauerspiel (literally, "mourning play" or "lamentation play," not "tragic drama") this book is necessary reading for students of critical theory who don't have literature as a primary field of interest. In it, Benjamin develops his critique of allegory (which he later amended in his work on Baudelaire and would play a major role in The Arcades Project) as well as his method of philosphical history, which would decisively influence Theodor Adorno (see, for example, Adorno's book on Kierkegaard and his lecture "The Idea of Natural History"). Don't let the notoriously opaque prologue dissuade you from reading beyond the opening pages--the rest of the book has more stylistic and conceptual clarity (which doesn't mean it's easy!). In fact, you may want to skip the prologue and return to it after reading the body of the text. In any case, this book will give you a solid grounding for understanding the foundations of Benjamin's work--it should not be slighted. I deduct a star not because of Benjamin but because of the translation (less than sterling) and Steiner's introduction which, despite correcting the title's translation, restricts itself to literary concerns.

Fun afternoon read
He strikes an interesting balance between the various Luther mythologies: the "Oak of Saxony" of ideolized Protestantism, the "Devil's Spawn" of reactionary Catholicism, and the mentally disturbed creature of speculative psychology.

It doesn't break any new ground or make any brilliant points, but it's a fun read.

Not only read it, but performed it.
Not only have I read Luther, but I have performed in the play. I played the Role of John Tetzel, the Dominican monk who sells indulgences. I found the play rather boring. Tetzel's scene in Act 2 scene 1 is one of the few entertaining bits of the play though a 4 page monolouge is a lot to memorize.

Creating the Protestants
Osborne, the popular enfant terrible of British drama in the 1950's and 60's (then ignored once his politics became unfashionable in artistic circles) won several awards for this play, an interesting but hardly comprehensive portrait of Martin Luther's career. The title role (originally played by Albret Finney)is challenging for an actor, and intriguing for the reader. The second act--in which Luther fights the Catholic Church--is strong and well-written; the first is also dramatic in its attempt to explain why Luther did what he did; the third, however, by viewing Luther at the end of his life, disappoints because we are only TOLD about his accomplishments rather than sharing them.

The scope of the play is too large--it tries to cover too much time rather than concentrating on one (or a few) specific events. But it is a curious and fascinating play; few are written about religion any more, and for that alone it is engrossing.

Very pleased with this purchase
I agree that this book is very good at covering the topics that it sets out in the outline.

This covers the EJBs in great detail - both 1.1 and 2.0. The knowledge of the individual authors definitely does come through - I have not purchased a Wrox title before, but I rather like the idea of multiple authors working on a book - I find the different views and experiences very powerful.

I did find that at times it did gloss over topics - I would have liked more information on the different pieces of the J2EE architecture, but that may have lost the focus of the book I suppose.

All in all, this book has been able to help us considerably in our development - it gives more than just 'theoretical' scenarios and has significantly reduced the learning curve amongst our team.

I never give perfect marks - but this book is definitely one of the better books that I have purchased.

Great book even for the experienced!
This book does cover EJB2.0 extensively (the review below must be for a different book!). It not only covers the differences between 1.1 and 2.0 but it gives great illustrative examples.

Although I have been working with EJB for sometime, the book covers the topics that I don't have time to play around with - it provides very good coverage of topics such as Local interfaces and their uses, EjbQL, and home methods (finally!)

The only chapters 19-21 are the only ones that do not go into real depth - but they shouldn't since they relate to topics not necessarily meant for this book; however, they give a great examples to start from such as the wireless one.

I definitely recommend this book - I already have to the rest of my team!

Great coverage of EJB's and 2.0
I picked this up last summer as it was the only book at the time offering coverage of EJB 2.0.

In the tradition of Wrox books, it offers good coverage of the entire EJB API. While some topics weren't covered exhaustively, that is not what these books are for. This book does provide *effective* coverage of almost everything in EJB 2.0. There is also coverage of design, which is a nice addition!

It is GREAT for it's intended purpose. Highly recommended...
