Gesta Regum Anglorum: The History of the English Kings (Oxford Medieval Texts)

Comprehensive study -- but not full text
Any medievalist will undoubtedly find William of Malmesbury's Gesta cited throughout the footnotes of other studies. This volume provides a comprehensive commentary and analysis of the Malmesbury manuscripts, equal in every respect to the high standard expected from Oxford Medieval Texts.
Be forwarned, however, that this volume contains only the commentary. Those interested in reading the excellent full-text English translation, or making their own interpretation from the Latin will require the companion Volume I, which for some reason, Amazon does not include in its catalogue listings.

Dated 1/2000
I bought this book recently because I wanted to eat healthier, and I don't make good salads. This book has easy to follow instructions, and the results are suprisingly good. I ate 3 servings of my first chopped salad. This is a good book to put healthy meals in the works. I rated it 4 stars, instead of 5, due to the time it takes to put togeather all the ingredients. However, the salads/meals rate much higher than any iceberg lettuce and store bought dressings. This book makes it easy to impress friends/dates with a great salad.

An interesting book about Russian emigres
This book is about "the Russian dustmen of Cannes", the Russians who fled during and after the Russian revolutions in 1918-1919 and tried to carve out a new life for themselves and their families in the West. The book is made up of 61 chapters, each by a different emigre. Mostly they are extracts from interviews by the book's authors with the emigres; a few are from written sources. A few of the emigres are whiners (the Bolsheviks "took all our lovely horses", one Countess complains) but most have interesting things to say. For royalty watchers, there is the account of Dowager Empress Maria Fyodorovna's lady-in-waiting of their captivity in the Crimea, and tales of Grand Duchess Ksenia in exile. There are tales of pogroms under imperial Russia, life during the revolution, escape from Russia in multitudes of ways, life in exile, life under the Soviet regime... The book's format makes it easy to skip around, and boring or annoying accounts are easily skipped over. The accounts seem to be weighted in favor of members of the nobility and bourgeoisie. A good book for anyone who is interested in how they lived during the revolution and after.

Best for the Novice
The strength of this book is the number of topics it covers. Its main weakness, though, is the same. By including so many topics, the reader actually learns very little. Even a child doing a class paper on a subject in this book would have to draw upon other resources. The book is best suited for people who have little or no knowledge of deserts. Unfortunately, that means kids. But most kids would never pick this book up since there isn't one colored photograph in the book. Even the black and white photos are not the greatest quality. For its size and price, the book was a disappointment. But then, I live in the desert so maybe I was hoping for something a bit more useful and informative.

Deserts are Cool
This book seems to have everything there is about deserts. I learned that deserts have lions, penguins, kangaroos, many spiders, scorpions and other animals, even fish and frogs. There are also many plants, with strange things like cactus and boojum trees. Even elephants live in the desert. I think the book is like an exploring trip from one desert to the other. I wish it had more pictures but it is easy to understand and has great maps. The book helped me write a report on deserts. I got an A. I would like to visit a desert to see what it is like to live there. I never knew deserts would be so interesting. They are too cool.

Some of the formulas are not correct
Page 421 Formula #15-27 Formula #15-27b (?) originally published by Joshi are WRONG! A book that costs more than US$300 should at least be checked for correct equations!

Petroleum Well Construction
Excellent in-depth treatment of core processes involved in modern well construction ... these processes are examined theoretically and pragmatically ... and each topic is extensively documented ... very complete and compressed without losing detail ... a great work!

Poor Learning Tool
I was asked to review this text by a group of EMTs at the teaching hospital where I am employed as an ER physician and surgeon. The text contains conflicting information and is not well organized. I would not recommed this text for teaching new EMTs. It could be useful as a review for experienced technicians or paramedics.

A worthwhile text and great reference
While the information can, at times, be repetitive or confusing, overall the book stresses those skills and topics which are important for prehospital emergency providers. The book is easy to use as a reference, reads at a slightly higher level than many introductory texts, and can be a valuable resource even for an EMT-P. This book does require, however, some direction and sometimes elaboration from from a knowledgeable and organized "Basic" instructor.

Worth owning and using.

AN EMT-B TO BE
THIS IS A EXCELLENT BOOK TO USE FOR LEARNING THE BASIC EMT. THIS BOOK WAS USED BY MY PROFESSOR AND 16 OUT OF A CLASS OF 19 PASS THE STATE TEST. SO ADVICE IF YOU GOING TO STUDY TO BE AN EMT USE MOSBY IS THE BEST

Overpriced Shovelware
Read the Microsoft documentation instead. This book is a thinly disguised rip-off of the Microsoft documentation padded with examples of dubious value. In 590 pages this book manages to add no value or information beyond the original documentation. That's quite an achievement.

If you like pain, ISAPI is for you
If you want to learn ISAPI...think again. This was "hot" 2 years ago...now it is all but dead.

ISAPI's big promise was better performance and memory usage...ironic that it has now fallen in favor to the biggest performance pig of all web applications...ASP. In an age of fast machines and small web apps, rapid development and ease of use wins out over performance.

ISAPI is hard to learn, harder to get right, unstable, bug ridden (if written in MFC) and surprisingly inflexible.

Look, you're a smart person. You want to do the right thing. You don't need to subject yourself to the torture of learning ISAPI. Only hard-core programmers who are tasked with writing a custom web app that is going to get some VERY heavy traffic should even bother with ISAPI.

So why did I give this book 4 stars? There are no good ISAPI books out there. This one has the most information in it and will allow you the best chance to actually develop something that works. Get this book and hit Genusa's (now dusty) ISAPI site. Also spend a lot of time in the Microsoft knowledge base...there are plenty of workarounds and bugs to learn about too.

Keep in mind that with ISAPI you had better be a damn good programmer. If your DLL ever crashes...bye bye web server. This is harder than you think if you are doing "serious" web programming which includes database access.

Smart managers will not allow mission-critical web apps to be developed in ISAPI by a web punk who has never done this before. Do everyone a favor and get a clue. There is a reason why nobody is doing this stuff anymore!

Game over. Go home and don't look back. Go off and learn ASP and Cold Fusion like a good little web programmer. You will have a marketable skill and will actually get things done.

Best of the available ISAPI books, has reasonable examples
ISAPI is Microsoft's approach to adding capabilities to web serving. There are only a few books that describe how to use ISAPI. This book is the best of them, because the author: 1) provides examples in both C and C++, and 2) compares ISAPI with CGI solutions. Unfortunately, ISAPI is a complicated subject, so more and shorter examples would help elucidate the reader.

too contrived
this is one book i regret reading with its contrived tale of a shipwrecked sailor in a harem and the stories of the inmates and little or no characterisation. i strongly suggest giviing this book a go by.

Victorian Erotica in Graphic Novel Form
Illustrated by six different artists: three black and white illustrators who do okay, one crayon scrawl quality color chapter, one okay colored chapter, and one colored chapter that's cleanly drawn but seems amateurish (art school student - some skill but no flavor). George Herbert's book is an 1890s era (or so) Victorian Erotica peice; which means explicit sex was it's only real interest. The ladies recount their "first times" and "first loves" - and five are Eurpoean dolls. Indeed, it's a selection of women from around the world, not a moorish Harem in itself. And they come across as ordinary women with unusual tales to tell. My main interest was the quality of artwork, and the lower quality of some of it (the colored versions were even amateurish in places) left me wondering if the second edition would be decent - and is probably why I've never seen a repeat of the concept. Besides the limited scope of the subject matter. Rather than grossly graphic, the sex is often staid and somewhat more classically illustrated.
