A Bushwhacker's View of the Adirondacks

Beautiful Photos of Rare Places
The author has hiked to some incredibly out-of-the-way places and taken gorgeous photos. The pictures show the incredible variety of scenery in the Adirondacks as the seasons change. They also show the fun that can be had from venturing to some of these places. An example is Gooseberry Mountain, in the middle of the Adirondack High Peaks. By scaling this seldom-visited mountain, the author obtained a great view of nearby Basin Mountain, a popular hiking destination. Moreover, he waited until just the right time to take a perfect picture. This is an exhilerating book - the best nature photography book I have ever seen, and the author didn't even have to leave New York State!

Nothing Better Than This For Hard-Core Hikers!
Winkler has done what so many other Adirondack High-Peak enthusiasts want to do - and then some. Not only has he climbed and documented dozens of unmarked highpeaks, but he has supplemented them with gorgeous and uniquely viewed photographs. These give a completely new perspective for any Adirondack hiker and is written with a practical approach.

If you want a 'jump-start' on taking on some of these 'tougher' climbs, read some of Winklers stories and get going. Be one of those few that reach these remote peaks and discover the magical seclusion that Winkler shares. Great reading year round!

Good tutorial/reference combo for beginner/intermediate
I use this book as a combo tutorial/reference guide. It's not a total beginner's guide. But if you have some experience with command-line Windows, DOS or any Unix at all, this book should prove adequate in guiding you through the 80-90% of Red Hat-specific Linux you'll want to learn. I like the book's conversational tone, the short tutorials, and some of the Web links that are sprinkled throughout the text. The book was written about the time RH 6.2 came out, so it's missing info on the latest features, but it's still useful to me as I am now running RH 7.2.

Good ref for beginner/intermediate RH Iinux user
I think this book covers a large part of the typical kinds of tasks that a begining to intermediate Red Hat user will need to know in an adequate way. It's not a "Dummies" book, because it has more depth and includes a lot of useful references for further study. But you don't have to be an experienced Linux user, either.

Experts will moan that it's not a typical O'Reilly "Nutshell" book. But this book is for those who need more tutorials and a mild hand-holding for the hard stuff. I think it hits the "middle ground" in a useful way.

The book was written about the time RH 6.2 shipped. I am running RH 7.2 now and there is still a lot of info in this book is that is applicable.

I don't think the publisher updated it for RH 7+, but I don't know why. I have this book and older "Linux Unleashed" on my small shelf and find both of them are handy references.

Well... it's a novel...of the film
Based on the new James Bond film, Raymond Benson takes up on Bond once again. This time, the story really stays pretty straight with the movie, only providing a bit more than the film. It contains some background information of Elektra/Renard, and what happens in the past, etc., but it isn't too much. Unlike Tomorrow Never Dies:A Novel, TWINE is not adding much to the film. Basically, if you saw the film and you are a little wishy-washy on reading a Bond book or having to read the what you saw on film, you probably don't need to buy this. However, if you're an avid Bond fan or would still want to take up on a Bond book, it's still a good read. If you see the movie first, it becomes easier to imagine the scenes. Raymond Benson has written better Bond novels than this, however, so make your choice more warily.

Let's all hope the movie is this terrific!
I am on record as trashing High Time to Kill (see reviews for that book) along with vowing to wait for the Benson novels in paperback (if not used papaerback). Well, I bought this paperback new and would have paid for a hard cover of this story's quality. Benson is terrific on this novelization. I'm sure there is a lot of extra info that will clarify parts of the movie when I see it. The rumored "airhead" personality of Christmas Jones does not come through in the book and I was afraid that the return to "sexpot" Bond girls would send the modernized Bond into a tailspin. One especially bright point is the meatier role for M. I think Benson likes writing her and it shows. For fans who haven't followed every plot point posted on the web, I'm sure there will be more than a few surprises. The plot-Bond is assigned to bodyguard Elektra King, the daughter of a recently-assassinated oil magnate. Elektra has already been the target of kidnappers led by the villainous Renard, a terrorist who has no pain center. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a "painless" killer was written into the Tomorrow Never Dies plot, but was scrapped after the novelizatioon had already been written) Great gadgets, great plot, great girls,a surprise development with M, and an atomic bomb stolen from a foremer Soviet Republic make for an exciting and riveting thriller.

One of the Best
I read the novelization of "Tomorrow Never Dies" before reading this. The thing I noticed with Benson is that in his novelizations he writes in third-person omniscent, allowing the reader to not only visualize everything, but know what the characters are thinking, which can obviously not be done in the movies. I had some of the movie before reading the book. After I read the book, however, I saw the movie and it made a lot more sense.

A poorly edited and schizophrenic organization style
The ONLY reason you should ever buy this book is if it's a required text book.

A Better-Than-Average Textbook
I wouldn't normally rate this textbook, but I was very surprised at one reviewer's very negative review of the text (see below me), and thought I should clarify a few points. First of all, I am not sure why any grad course would use this text, as it is clearly intended as an introductory text for undergraduates. (I used it for a 3rd year course). I can't imagine a grad student finding this text interesting (it's way too basic), but I think most 3rd year students-- even those with a good background in psychology-- would find this text interesting and informative. Secondly, I didn't find the layout of the text at all "schizophrenic" (whatever he/she means by that...). Each chapter begins with an overview of the disorders to be studied, followed by 1. information on specific disorders 2. information on the putative etiologies for these disorders, and 3. information on treatment strategies for these disorders. As a result, the "psychodynamic" explanations behind depression might be discussed at one point (along with biological explanations, etc.), and later in the same chapter psychodynamic treatments for depression will be discussed (along with biological treatments, etc.). I didn't find this confusing, and I certainly didn't find it needlessly repetitious. One thing that I especially liked is the way in which the authors incorporate case studies into the chapters, the detailed references to important and influential psychological studies, and the up-to-date studies that are cited. Unlike many abnormal psych books I've looked at, this one really focuses on research, and the result is that it is much easier to understand what the true issues are. I also found the book refreshingly free from the condescension that is often prominent in undergrad textbooks. The one "caveat", if any, is that is is very clear that the authors of the text adhere to a CBT paradigm of psychological illness, so it is wise to be aware of this bias beforehand. (Although I think they generally avoid being particularly biased in their discussions...).

For a required textbook..Pretty good
Easy to read & understand. Full of information, and easy to navigate. I had to buy this for an abnormal psych class, and honestly am glad that it wasnt one of those dry boring texts!
