This is one of the single greatest books that I have ever had the privelage of reading. The writer describes in clear and concise terms the price of liberty, how we won it, and how we are losing it. You wont find this information in any government school or college.
Delightfully this book is an easy read. The author wrote this book with the common man in mind. Splendidly I tore through this book in no time at all without having to read a single sentence twice.
Patriots, students, and anybody dedicated to preseving liberty and economic freedom should definately read this masterpiece. Its amazing that the information in this book is surpressed from our schools. Everybody should read this book twice and buy copies for all your family and friends.

The author doesn't woo you with complex legal citings, boggle your mind with twists in logical and fanciful leaps.

This book is an absolute "must have" for obstetrical practitioners and expectant parents who are looking for a way back into normal childbirth. This book is an invaluable reference tool for anyone involved in childbirth, including educators, doulas, midwives, nurses and doctors. It provides reviews of the current literature regarding just about any procedure of standard care that a pregnant woman is likely to encounter in the American medical system. This book provides important information, especially for anyone who is trying to convince an OB that "standard procedures" (like limiting food for a laboring woman) may not be supported by research

This book is well worth buying. I had the pleasure of learning from these gentlemen in dental school and highly reccomend there book. It is concise and easy to read, it provides a solid foundation in periodontics.

This is a wonderful book for everyone who has ever dreamed of living abroad. The author describes his experiences of living in several European capitals in practical terms -- how to rent an apartment for a short stay, how to forward mail, where to find other Americans abroad. Also included is information about sightseeing in the city and daytrips to nearby attractions. But, what I found most enjoyable is that each chapter is a wonderful travel memoir of the authors' time in each city, excellently written by one author and brilliantly illustrated with the drawings of the other.

This book is a standard source on scales and temeraments, and their history. It compares and contrasts Pythagorean tuning, just intonation, meantone, irregular temperaments, and finally equal temperament. Barbour displays a strong predisposition towards twelve tone equal temperament in this work, and interprets the history of scales and temperaments as an inexorable march towards equal temperament.

If you are a publishing company looking for something to reprint, this is a classic.

Elisabeth Murray writes a wonderful and highly detailed biography of her grandfather, James Murray. Simon Winchester reintroduced many in this country to Mr. Murray in his book The Professor and the Madman, which told the story of Murray and an American living in an English asylum named W. C. Minor. This book was highly readable, but not comprehensive as a true biography of Murray.

James Murray, the first editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, was a gentle man of words who dedicated his life to the study of the English Language. His efforts are best understood in this book by the descriptions Elisabeth gives of his scriptorum, where Murray spent the majority of his life, and where Elisabeth worked as a young lady.

In reading about this man's life and the effort that was required to undertake the construction of this dictionary, one really gets a sense of the vastness and complexity of the English Language, the historical richness and the regional diversity. One also sees in florid detail the life of one of the great late-Victorian pedants.

This is really two books in one: the life story of James Murray, first editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, and the tale of the dictionary itself. Both are lovingly told. It's a must read for anyone interested in dictionaries or linguistics.

Elizabeth Murray, the granddaughter of James Murray, who was the chief editor of the huge Oxford English Dictionary on which every serious scholar of English continues to depend, has written an excellent biography of the greatest English lexicographer, and done more: she has also given an insight into his personality, and, yet more importantly, into the whole scholarly world of philology, lexicography etc. in Victorian England, and the difficulties which beset the creators of the dictionary. I recommend the biography most highly, and feel that all fans of *The Surgeon of Crowthorne* (chiefly on Dr W.C. Many reviews here are about the old edition of Mathematical Biology (the softcover one volume, 2nd ed). Recently J.D. Murray split the second edition in two hardcover volumes. Volume 1 discusses mainly models that use Ordinary Differential Equation, while slightly more complicated Math is required for Volume 2. These new books have added topics (modelling of marital interaction, temperature-dependent sex determination, wolf territoriality, etc). While sometimes the model is still very simple and in its inital stages (e.g. marital interaction model), the books show how much biology and applied mathematics intersect, and they make very interesting read.
There is a certain lack of analysis of the nonlinear cases, so for those who need examples of amplitude equations, different ways of perturbing a linear model, these books are not so good. These books might be too complicated for a bio person with not much mathematical background, but it is very accessible to those with some math background, and are certainly easy for Math or Physics people who want to know more applications to biology.

A few decades ago mathematical biology consisted mostly of evolutionary and predator-prey models. This has changed dramatically in recent years with the advent of computational biology and gene sequencing projects. The applications of mathematics to biology are now exploding and this book is an excellent example of that. The book could best be described as the application of nonlinear dynamical systems and reaction-diffusion partial differential equations to biology structures and processes. Readers with background in these areas of mathematics will find their ideas applied beautifully in this book. The best sections of the book for me were the discussions of synchronized insect emergence, models of testosterone secretion control, insect dispersal models, calcium waves on amphibian eggs, mammalian coat patterns, models of hallucination patterns in the brain, and modeling the transmission dynamics of HIV. Numerous exercises end each chapter, and the mathematical algorithms can easily be coded in Mathematica or some other high level language. This is a fine addition to the literature on mathematical biology and for the price it is a real bargain.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although a tough read, it is well worth your time and effort. The sections on spots and stripe formation are excellent and quite interesting. An excellent book!

The Father and the Son is a true and complicated story. Matt has done an extraordinary job sharing his father's singular life, portraying a loving but lonely man evolving over time. The writing is unique, blending a reporter's precision with a collection of voices, ranging from compassionate to sarcastic. Matt traces his father's path from childhood to priesthood, following him through a series of families. The story is often sad and poignant, as a loving son watches his father move on to a new, monastic family. The story is also uplifting, as we gradually appreciate that his father made the right choice, finding fulfillment and peace after a long journey.

As an atheist, I was not prepared to appreciate Father James' calling. However, no religious conviction is required - the author himself has wavering beliefs. The portrayal of his father's struggle is compelling, and the resolution of his journey is gratifying, regardless of the reader's (or the author's) personal views. The final chapter is touching and remarkable.

I believe this book will appeal to many people, regardless of faith or family history. However, it had special meaning for me. Matt and I became best friends in second grade, and we remain close today. For over a decade, I spent most every day (and many nights) in Jim Murray's house. He took us to countless movies, to amusement parks, and to far-away places. He took me on my first plane trip (to Disney World). He took us to Niagara Falls.

I loved Jim Murray like my own father, and later found him equally baffling. Matt and I were best friends during his slow conversion. When Jim sold the house, I spent the day helping them move to a new apartment. When Matt was alone for his first Thanksgiving in college, I went to Evanston. We drove to the monastery to see his dad. The day that Matt's column appeared in the Wall Street Journal, first describing his father's life, Matt was an usher in my wedding. For me, this book was a bittersweet memoir. For other readers, I believe it will be a fascinating and moving story.

I'm writing through tears brought forth by Matt Murray's moving (and funny) exploration of his relationship with his father and of his father's decision to become a priest and enter a monastery. The inquiry is honest and direct and the writing is clear, precise, and witty. Anyone who wants to know how to approach a relationship with an adult parent can learn from this book. I know, because I am Matt's brother, and in reading this book, I discovered a whole new family for myself.

I could not put the book down. It was a great story, well written, and fascinating. Matt's writing is cameralike and I felt like I was there in many of the episodes he describes. I loved his honest portrayal of his bratty self as an adolescent, and his parlay back and forth of his take on things, and then the opinions of others. I liked it as a story alone, but it is a great study of family life, religious conversion, and the relationships of parent and child. I am a mother of four sons and I was especially moved by the journal entrys of Michele, and the person they evoked.
