Great Pirate book, but not really a book about Henry Morgan
This book was easy to read and packed with information. If you have an interest in pirates, this book will give you a fantastic overview.

If you are looking for specific, down-and-dirty details about Henry Morgan, however, this book might not be your best pick.

In essence, the author does an admirable job of showing what life, and especially life as a pirate, would have been like during the 1600s. In addition, there are detailed notes and a wonderful section of additional sources at the end of the book.

If you already have a good basic understanding of pirate life and want to know everything about Henry Morgan, however, consider yourself forewarned: I kept waiting for the specifics about Henry Morgan to show up. When they finally did begin to show up half-way through the book I found them to be of the "We don't really know for sure but this is a good guess of what he might have experienced" variety.

To be fair, for such a prominent historical figure, Morgan left few records, especially of his early years. I did find the information about his Uncles new, interesting and thought-provoking but felt the title suggested a more thorough treatment of the man himself.

Change the title and it would be a GREAT pirate book or pack it with EVERY detail you can find about Morgan and this would be the perfect pirate book. However, with Morgan figuring so prominently in the title I was a little disappointed to find the book contained so little new information about him.

Fascinating, educating, and highly readable
I had heard of Henry Morgan and the buccaneers, but did not know much about them before I read this book. "Terror of the Spanish Main" presents a wealth of information in an entertaining and understanding way. Some of the parts that I found most interesting include the following:

1. What was London really like in the 17th century? (Marrin pulls no punches in describing the sights and odors that more sterile histories omit.
2. The democratic way in which the buccaneers and pirates organized their expeditions. The pirates were a "floating democracy."
3. The horrific tortures...described vividly in the book...that were "acceptable" more than 300 years ago.
4. How Morgan's life ended.

Numerous illustrations accompany the well-documented text. The book far exceeded my expectations, and I will read other books by this author.

A Great Biography
This is a great book about one of the most famous buccaneers of all time. This is a great book, I couldn't put it down. If you like good books, buccaneers, ineresting information, or all of the above, you will love this book.

Bloody Season

Medium Rare and Juicy!
Tombstone 1881. A brief clash of wills, commonly known as the gunfight at the OK Corral, became indelibly etched in the American imagination. Loren D. Estleman takes this familiar story and fleshes it out into a whopping good yarn. But beware! You don't gulp "Bloody Season" like a hastily eaten meal; you savor every bite of this well-written tale. From the opening page of Doc Holliday hacking over a sink on a crisp October morning to the closing narrative regarding the outcome of "Season's" principal players, you'll be hooked by Estleman's exceptionally well-penned, descriptive prose. If you think you've been to Tombstone, think again. You've yet to relive its graphic past until you've been there during the "Bloody Season."

Replaces fiction with fascinating reality
The first sentence of Bloody Season grabs you and the book won't let you go: He was dying faster than usual that morning . . . Estleman introduces Doc Holiday with those painful words.

Then with careful detail, he dismantles the fiction of the OK Corral, replacing it with fascinating reality. I used to sip well whisky in saloons in Tombstone back in the early 70s. How I wish I had Estleman's vision when I was there.

Good, Solid, Fast, and Informative Read
I have been privileged to read many books on the Troubles in Tombstone from S. Lake's larger than life treatment to A. Barra's recent offering. I found Estleman's treatment, the novelization, to be refreshing while very informative. He gives a certain life to the principals of the ever popular 1881 incident rather than the stiff renditions of the facts.

Agfhan Bound
It's not a bad book if you are into this type of slave thing. I thought the first two wives he "tutored" seemed to enjoy it lot more than a normal person would. It's just humiliating to women but I am sure men would enjoy it. But in the end it is a woman who turns the tables on him and I enjoyed that very much. As slave books go it is kind of mild.

An incredibly modern Victorian style erotic story ...
that I have ever read, and, trust me I've read a lot of them. The author, Henry Morgan, manages to spin a tale of adventure, torture, S/M, dominance and submission using modern day Afganistan, Pakistan and the UK, and injects the erotic spiciness of the region into a full fledged novel ....

Our hero, David, meets up with a long lost schoolmate, Justin, in the UK, and Justin is then very very surprised to learn that David has set up a very successfull school, of course in a mansion in the hinterlands of London, where he takes posession of wives and daughters and teaches them the wonderfull art of total and utter submission to their husbands or furture husbands.

The book then details the events in Afganistan and the middle East that led to David starting his special school. After graduating as a doctor, our hero went to Afganistan to help the poor where he was captured by rebels, tribal chieftans and even the Russians with the task of keeping the female prisoners alive while they were being 'tortured' into full submission. In the midst of battle David manages to escape to Pakistan where he meets up with a married banker who soon tells him that the submission tortures were not to be frowned upon but rather considered a necessity in the training of the women folk in their part of the world.

Although David has morals and scruples, from the beginning to the end of the book the reader certainly enjoys his plight as hed bends, twists and shreds those nasty morals to be able to enjoy the moment.

Generally when I hear S/M, torture, dominance etc etc in a book I usually run, anot walk, away from the purchase, but on this book tha author has produced and absolutlely fabulous piece of work mainaining eroticism of the scenes without overdoing the violence etc etc .... I got the distinct feeling that I was reading a Vicorian erotic novel set into the events of was and burkhas today .... what a fabulous book and a must have for our little erotic book library .....

PS. I don't imagine this book will remain in stock for long like all the great erotics sold on Amazon ....

A book for everyone who interacts with Children
Subtitled "A Mom's Guide to Letting Dad be Dad," this is a MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) book. Elisa Morgan is president and CEO of MOPS International and Carol Kuykendall is director of communications for MOPS as well as a free lance writer and speaker.

Written in an informal conversational style the book is an encouragement to mothers, and fathers, especially young parents. The stories told help readers feel that the authors have walked the same road they are on. The difference between the roles filled by mothers and fathers is explained without making one superior to the other. Children need two parents working together in harmony. The authors help parents work toward that goal which in turn makes the husband and wife relationship healthier and happier. This is an excellent book to put into the hands of first time parents especially but is helpful for everyone who interacts with children, even grandparents and other relatives.

CaptMorgan1670
Outrageously expensive for such a small book. It does provide a good couple of points that vindicate Morgan's reputation. For the hard core fan this is an ok read. (...)

Informative reading for the scholar or advanced student
This work is not intended for the armchair historian, although it boasts a reader friendly approach. Henry Morgan's raid on Panama has been treated rarely in the scholarly world, and certainly not with a focus on geopolitics. The work gives an important look at England-French-Spanish politics in the New World during an uneasy time. This work is scholalry, uses some excellent primary documents, and gives a useful and refreshing examination of privateers-buccaneers in the Seventeenth Century.

Cup of gold : a life of Sir Henry Morgan, buccaneer, with occasional reference to history

The Importance of Writing The First One
Cup of Gold is important in that it was Steinbeck's first novel. If you look closely you can see the kind of *heart* that would characterize Steinbeck's humanity in later works. His sensitivity, if you will. But that kind of sensitivity is at its best when balanced with Steinbeck's wit and satirical edge. Here, though, in Cup of Gold was a young Steinbeck without the momentum -- nor the boldness -- to balance a sense of humanity with cutting satire, and the novel ultimately sounds too sentimental and limp. In my opinion, Steinbeck really came into his own with Tortilla Flat (1935). Pastures of Gold (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933) were both closer to Cup of Gold in their romantic tendancies. But Tortilla Flat is the first novel where Steinbeck really enjoyed writing a novel, and the result was a comedy. Cup of Gold provides a window into a young writer's mind (Steinbeck published it at 27) -- a writer trying to find his calling -- and ultimately, a writer who would go on the write better novels with maturity and the development of his craft.

His first novel... common themes
I love just about everything Steinbeck wrote. I rated it against his other novels, not just in general. Four stars because Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row, etc are 5 stars... This is his only historical novel (I believe). It's an easy read and forshadows his common themes like disalutionment (sp?) or like the U2 song "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." It reminded me a lot of his later novel, East of Eden, and the whole "thou mayest" theme. It's not a pirate/adventure story. Yes, Henry Morgan was a pirate, but if you're looking for "ahoy matey, walk the plank," try "Treasure Island" or even "Peter Pan." This book was very enjoyable to read.

Nihilism and the Denial of Teleology
Perhaps one of the finest works of fiction ever created by the humans. This is the story of "being human", a tale lived authentically for all eternity, by all humanity: human consciousness smashing its head against the seen and unseen forces that blind our eyes and minds to our eventual fate-the Void.
Our dreams, desires, goals, pains, pleasures, and our vanity-all but sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Blind "genes", groping forth in the darkness, propagating for no purpose...

Read on! Time is short.

For a book on torture in the frozen Russian north it's OK
but, for eroticism it does not really cut it.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed 'Afgan Bound' by Henry Morgan I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book is a continuation of the trials and tribulations David, the master of the discipline school in the UK, Sabrina, the sultry daughter from the mid East that was sent for training, and, Justin, a
friend from David's regular school days.

Sabrina and Justin turn the tables on David, make him the sex slave and then travel to Russia to deliver him to a well paying customer when David escapes.

Ok so we start 'Nordic Bound' with David on the run with two barely pubescent teenage girls from Lapland (ok you guessed it, the pun was intended in the book) hiding in the frozen Russian hinterland buying and trading a semi precious stones, ambar. Of course Sabrina considers it a professional assault that David escaped and she and Justin embark on a seach for her property, escaped slave David.

Justin meets up with Catherin a young Russian druggie and she introduces him into the scene in Murmansk and lets him experience 'the dragon' which I would guess is inhaled H. This is a very very erotic encounter and the only reason that the book is rated 3 stars .....

So for those readers that love a lot of sex, enjoy torture in a freezing cold environment, adventure of the underground then you may enjoy this book, but, for those of us that look for the crisp writing of 'Afgan Bound' by this author ... well forget it babe ... better to get the vodka out of the freezer first and
down a couple ....

Paul West -- Not OK
According to the fly-leaf, the Chicago Tribune considers Mr. West "possibly our finest living stylist in English." Well, that may be but buddy he was way out of his genre with this book. The only reason I struggled through the entire book is that I finish what I start. Verbose, convuluted, complex and dry are some of the words I can muster up to describe this book. Reading one of the Greek tragedies that West continually refered to would be easier than getting through this horrid work of historical fiction.

West is a second-rate Faukner. At least Faukner lived in Mississippi. I got money that says West has never even BEEN to Arizona. I will say that this book had a LOT in common with Doc Holliday. Reading it was about as much fun as going to a dentist -- and did you about as much good as a dentist with a consumptive cough and a shaky hand.

Bottom Line: Don't waste your time.

Who's history?
I enjoyed this novel, as I have all of West's historical fictions. As a reader, you have to have a sense of humor, an inkling when someone is pulling your leg for dramatic effect. When reading West, this is doubly important. He's a master at this sort of thing. In other novels, he's made mention of Shakespeare during Milton's time, of Tourette's syndrome in WW2 China, and the conceit of having Lord Byron's doctor narrate his autobiography from the grave. Take it with a grain of salt, enjoy it. I suspect most readers prefer his spin on the fate of Big Nose Kate. It's fiction. It's wondeful.

Besides, West has moved on to bigger and better things. Can you imagine someone staking their whole lives, their entire imagination, their reputation and everything that consumes the soul on Doc Holliday? Life's too short, live a little.

And that's what makes it all so amazing!
The fact that Paul West, "with so little research" (?), could put together such a fascinating look into the life of Doc Holliday is extraordinary. With typical Westian flair he reconstructs Holliday as Holliday himself wishes he had been. This "fictional" account has permanently altered my idea of who Doc Holliday was. Bravo Mr. West. As for genre, I believe this is a literary book, rather than a pulpy one. It reminds me of Robert Kroetsch's The Studhorse Man and Coover's Ghost Town. For any generous reader, this book is sure to be a pleasure.
