Very Nice
This is a nice book. It is well written.
The chapters are devided into areas of New Mexico. In each chapter there is a little bit about the history of that area, places to visit and more information about other nearby areas.

Having been to many of the areas that are discussed in this book, I found the description on target and the suggestions of places to visit good. I particularly liked the history of the area with directions to see some of the historical spots in each area.

Very nice. Well worth the money. This book will join me in the car as we go on our trips. It will join the RoadSide History of New Mexico as one of our invaluable, must keep in the car resources.

Enjoy.

Heading to New Mexico? Buy this Book!
My family and I planned a trip last summer (2000) using this book. Our original plan was to spend most of our time in Santa Fe and Taos. After we read this book, however, we found several far more interesting trips that cost us about half what it would have cost in Santa Fe. Sure, we did a night in Santa Fe and Taos, but this book showed us the hidden spots in town that really were known only to locals. This book is so good that we even had a wonderful time in Farmington! Yes, that's right, Farmington. In fact, we plan to return their and once again enjoy the hidden restaurants and trading posts in which we found some of the most unique indian jewelry ever (and at about 1/3 of Santa Fe prices). Kudos to Ms. Moore! I just wish I could talk her into writing a similar book about Wisconsin.

Great Guide for Getting Off the Beaten Track
This small but fact-filled book explores the richness of New Mexico beyond the Albuequerque-Santa Fe-Taos axis. The author really knows her stuff--giving equal weight to the Native American, Hispanic and Anglo influences that make New Mexico such an interesting state. It's in the car beside me every time I head there.

Suits out of state visitors and native Floridians alike.
Florida Camping is packed full of great directions, reviews, and a 1-10 rating system. It looks condensed, but what you get is factual, to the point, and complete. Whether you are an RV camper or a tent camper, you can find the perfect campground in this book. You'll need to mark the page or lose it forever, there are so many campgrounds listed! Included in the reviews are local trivia, like "a kid was nearly eaten by an alligator here", or "this is the only area that rare white squirrels frequent", to "there's a fantastic bar-b-q place just down the road". Thank you!

A beautiful edition, to give as a gift
We have an inexpensive paperback version (see our reviews) of this classic poem, and we said that's enough for us. That was before we looked through this beautifully illustrated (by Bruce Whatley) edition of The Night Before Christmas.

The lyrics are the same, from book to book, but the fanciful illustrations in this one are enough to engage adults and children as they read this book together.

The perfect gift for any family whose Christmas tradition includes reading this classic!

The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Tasha Tudor
I discovered this book 31 years ago, for my daughter and it is still loved by all the family. The illustrations are wonderful, warm, charming and delightful and bring a special meaning to the story. We still read it to all the young children on Christmas Eve and for adults we read the story and pass a grab bag gift every time the word THE is mentioned. It would not be Christmas without this book. It is magical.

A Happy Christmas to All
This beautiful book was in my family as a hard cover edition for many years and was a Christmas Eve tradition for my four sons when they were growing up. It's poor battered body disappeared some time after the last of my little ones went off into the adult world. I am so delighted to see it back again, though this time as a nicely affordable soft cover. Clement C. Moore's enchanting story poem already provides an atmosphere filled with warmth and joyful expectation and with the addition of Tasha Tudor's quaint, nostalgic water-colors from an antique New England the Christmas magic is complete!
The winter landscapes fill our senses and Tasha's own gray tabby cat and Welsh Corgi welcome us into this charming world.
Tasha's Santa that you will meet in this book has been portrayed as the poem describes him...a right jolly old elf. He's not that much larger than the corgi and his team really consists of eight "tiny" reindeer. His pointy ears and his Eskimo mukluks add to the delightful ambiance of the book. He dances with the toys and with the happy animals and we can truly believe it will be a happy Christmas for all.
I hope this book becomes a Christmas Eve tradition for many, many more families.

Anthropology and Africa: Changing Perspectives on a Changing Scene
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Virginia (1994)
Author: Sally Falk Moore
Amazon base price: $35.00
Average review score:

Reviewing anthropology's African legacy... and its future
Sally Falk Moore, Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University, puts together a comprehensive survey of anthropological studies of African peoples. Her intimate knowledge of anthropological literature enables her to create a sweeping overview of trends in anthropology, from its inception in the 1800s through its troubled involvement with European colonialism and into its recent process of self-examination and redefinition. In each of these stages, Moore asserts, studies of African people have played a prominent role.

The writing style is clear and streamlined, and Moore admirably avoids indulging in dense anthropological jargon. The book serves as a fine introduction both for non-anthropologists interested in Africa and for students of anthropology seeking a synopsis of past African research in their discipline.

Professor Moore's survey is thorough and compelling, and it benefits from a multitude of sources (her bibliography is nearly as long as her own text!). It would have benefitted even more, however, from the author's own perspectives and points of view. She refrains from adding much in the way of commentary, which is perhaps understandable given the volume of literature with which she deals. Plenty of water has flowed under this particular bridge, and it's all she can do to dip into it here and there and describe the trends and conflicts that have taken place. Still, I would have better enjoyed the read had she contributed more of herself to the book.

an essential bibliographical resource
This is a great road map and literature review for graduate students and scholars working in Anthropology or African Studies. Moore covers roughly a century of anthropological work on Africa, tracing relationships between anthro. theory and changing conditions in the continent. Few other works cover so much material in such a concise and systematic fashion.
