Mr. Driebe has done beautiful creative work in his compilation of In Search of the Wild Indian. It is packed full of photographs and has enough history and information to provide the reader with a great understanding of the photographer's life work while instilling the desire to want to learn more about these native peoples. The subjects in the photos are uplifting, haunting and expressive. The energy in this book is amazing. I thank Mr. Driebe for this gift -- it is ageless and will continue to take top billing on my coffee table.

Not often am I willing to spend this amount on a book; this one is worth the price. Excellent pictoral, and the details are just wonderful. Portrays Native Americans as no other work has; in detail and with respect!!

A BEAUTIFUL book and great addition to a home library. This book is about Carl and Grace Moon who had a special connection to the Indians of the southwest, however it is also about the wonderful Native people who inspired them. Many beautiful photos and very in-depth text! These people are still there, I have visited with them often. I hope this book will serve as a wonderful tribute to them.

moon has made a very readable guide that is simply better than the rest. lonely planet also has a good guide, but the information seems to be tied together with rambling of factoids.

This is a great book.It tells you were to stay,what to see,were to eat all on the moon!It gives a short history of the moon andsome stuff that might happen on the moon(the author predicted that we would find ice on the moon and we did in the year the book predicted!) This is a must if you love the moon.

This book not only got me around, but I learned a lot along the way.

Carl Parkes provides a great cultural education and writes well about Thai history. You'll be informed and your table manners won't offend your Thai hosts (they use forks and spoons but not the way that we do). More photos and maps would be nice (the D-K guide to Thailand will fill those gaps). But the big shortcoming with the book is the subject itself: Bangkok. Sophisticated and curious travelers to Thailand always say that their favorite spot is Chiang Mai in the north! You've got to fly through Bangkok to get there so you still may want to carve out a week to see Bangkok and environs. But do try to get to the north (Parkes also wrote the Moon Thailand Handbook, which will be useful if you do decide to visit Chiang Mai).

I first picked up the initial edition of Bangkok Handbook in 1992. As I worked in Bangkok for 7 years in the 1980s and I was a bit curious as to how deep this guide would go. While most guide books cover all the basic sights and things to do they often fall short in really getting under the surface. This book did indeed have things to teach me. I ended up taking some of the walking tours myself and used the map of the river stops extensively.

I like my guides to give my some good historical and cultural information in a concise but insightful manner. Take Thai temples. First time visitors are typically struck by their stunning beauty. But what do all the architectural forms mean? What aspects of Buddhism are contained within their design? You could read whole volumes on this at your local university. The Handbook, however has a two page spread that will get you up to speed fast with an understanding of the basic terminology and historical usage. To my mind this is what separates the Handbook from the more popular Lonely Planet travel survival guides. These "backpacker bibles" may be very good at where to get the cheapest rooms and meals, but really fall short on what you are really seeing while you are there.

Bangkok is both heaven and hell. It's city of fabulous restaurants, fantastic shopping, pristine temples and frantic sex. It's polluted, noisy, smelly, ill-planned and hot, hot, hot. And It's traffic is world famous. We used to joke that you could do anything you wanted in Bangkok; you just couldn't get there. (Over the last few years with the advent of many new tollways and since Dec. 99 the overhead trains this has really abated.)

I've used Parkes book a lot - along with my reprint of the "1928 Guide to Bangkok" which is great for my historical expeditions. And I have found myself in Thailand every year since I've left in 1990.

"What is poetry? Carl Sandberg asks in the delightful "Short Talk" that opens this volume. How is a poem made? If it can be explained, is it really a poem? Should children write poetry? He then goes on to present his own captivating, often amusing poems. Dealing with everyday themes that young readers will enjoy, he writes about skyscrapers, hats, tactors, and buffaloes; pumpkins, weeds, cabbages, and birds. There are groups of poems about children, wind and sea, and night; and a number of Sandberg's best-known powems, including "Fog."

The 1999 Edition was great for the first couple of years, but it is time for a new one now. This one is now antiquated. It's been 4 years now and we would like the 4th Edition ASAP. Let's go Carl and don't let the JV book take away all the light from the Varsity team's book !

I owned several guidebooks while living in Thailand and used them extensively while traveling throughout the kingdom. The LP guidebook is updated every year which made it excellent for the nitty-gritty of travel. On the downside of the LP, EVERYONE is carrying it over there. I found myself following hordes of backpackers from the train station to every guesthouse listed in The Bible. I began to notice travelers unwittingly conversing in "lonelyplanetspeak"--qouting directly from lp guide. Moon Publication's guidebook provided me with out of the way places to stay and eat as well as a different point of view--off the beaten track, but not in a ditch. Carl Parkes has a great sense of both humor and adventure. I found him to be a much more enjoyable travel companion than that other guy.

The Thailand Handbook gives you valuable background information on the culture and history of Thailand. As far as places to go are concerned, it is refreshing to see a guidebook that covers not only the major attractions but also the attractions of smaller towns you might pass through on your journey.

Moon guides are in general well researched, balanced, informative and truly valuable travel companions. Northern California, for example is quite excellent.

This "new" edition of the Philippines Handbook, published in late 1999, is, however, a sharp contrast to Moon's normal standards.

Sloppily edited and badly out of date its errors are too numerous to mention, the accomodation sections being especially unreliable. I checked out accomodation comments for several cities which I personally know well including Manila and Cebu and the data in this book are either very out of date, very incomplete, or just plain wrong. Information on shopping in both Manila and Cebu is similarly outdated or just plain absent.

No travel guide, unfortunately, takes this interesting, challenging and rapidly developing country seriously. The "new" (1977) Lonely Planet guide is little better than the Moon guide

In summary, if you have an older edition of either guide, use it. These "new" editions are a sham.

Unlike the great South Pacific handbooks by Moon this book lacks detail. It mentions areas you can go to, but not how to to get there or where to stay. It has general information but is not worth it. Would rather like to depend on Lonely Planet, am going to check out Jens Peters book as well. I'll pass on this guide.

This was our guide to our last trip to the Philippines, and was priceless. Was enjoyed just as much by our relatives there. Would never have enjoyed the 'Hobbit House' so much if it hadn't been mentioned. This is a must have guide for anyone travelling there.
