Excellent biography for those wanting to know more about LMM
This book is a good, brief source for the information found in L.M. Montgomery's journals. Mario Rubio and Elizabeth Waterson edit the "Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery" series so they definitely know their subject! This book is ideal for anyone who doesn't want to read all four journal volumes, or who has read all four journals but wants even more information.
The authors also, I believe, have access to the original, hand-written volumes of all of LMM's journals. This means they know what's in LMM's final journal, volume 5, which may not be published for some time as some people she wrote about are still living. But they were able to include other details of LMM's life after 1935, which alone makes it worthwhile.
Superb brief biography!
Writing a life: L.M. Montgomery is written by two extremely well documented authors. Very brief, this biography gives you an overall idea of L.M. Montgomery's life, ideas and writing. A must read!

Country Christmases really are the best!
A wonderful find for country aficionados and for those who relish the sentimentality of Christmas. The writing is excellent and the illustrations picture perfect. The collection of essays and other contributions from the likes of L.M Montgomery (of "Anne of Green Gables" fame), Laura Ingalls Wilder and Bob Artley set the perfect tone. The many beautiful photographs and folk paintings of rural winter scenes in addition to old photographs of farmhouse Christmas pasts likewise evoke just the right mood for the holiday season. This book is for anyone who lives in the country, would like to live in the country and who loves Christmas.

A brief but engaging biography of author L. M. Montgomery
Mollie Gillen's biography of Lucy Maud Montgomery for "The Canadians" series provides readers with an excellent introduction to the life of the author of "Anne of Green Gables." Readers will recognize some strong parallels between Montgomery's childhood and her literary creations like Anne, Emily of New Moon, and the Story Girl. Montgomery's mother died when the baby was only 21 months old and she was raised by her maternal grandparents in Cavendish, on Prince Edward Island. However, young readers who have been enchanted by Montgomery's novels might be surprised to learn that the author was quite unhappy as an adult. Gillen not only provides standard biographical detail regarding the author's publication history, she gets into her strong friendships with pen pals Ephraim Weber and George Boyd MacMillan, as well as her troubled marriage to the Reverend Ewan Macdonald. What emerges is a rough yet compelling psychological portrait of the author. This 64-page book is illustrated with a couple of dozen black & white photographs representing the people and places in Montgomery's life, many of which I saw last summer when I honeymooned on PEI. Many of the pages contain a question for readers to answer from the accompanying text (e.g., "What is blank verse?", "Why would the town need a taxidermist?"). Ultimately, Gillen's biography of Lucy Maud Montgomery will make young readers think about the relationship between the personal lives of an author and the stories they write about. I can imagine them making a point of finding out when a particular book was written and checking it against this biography to see what was happening in Montgomery's life at that point in time. However, I do not wish to suggest that this is strictly a juvenile biography, for despite its brevity it will prove insightful to adult readers as well as those who the age of Anne and her kindred spirits.

Same ending over and over and over and over again
"Akin to Anne" is really boring, Yes,some stories are intresting, but most end in the same monotonous way:"Oh,your last name is ----!I had a half-sister/stepsister/sister who went out west and we never wrote to her because she married poorly! Her husband/middle name/grandmother's name was - (whatever the person's name)!" You may try to deny it,but it's true!
Enjoyable stories for those who love Anne books
Reading this book, you will meet many orphans who are sweet and dreamy but haven't been loved. But you are assured of happy endings in these short stories just as in other Montgomery's works. If you have already read many of them, you'll find the same character traits, plots and dramatic events several times in this book, but her stories are enchanting even with similar plots. And I'm sure you'll feel happy and optimistic after reading those stories. Like myself you may feel happy to imagine how those characters and plots have been woven into Anne series.
Delightful stories!
As a girl, I read all of the Anne books, the Emily books, and many of the other books by Lucy Maud Montgomery. As a young woman, I re-read all these books and found more in them than I had ever found in childhood. They are all timeless stories. I found Akin To Anne by accident, and I grabbed it off the shelf. It was as wonderful as I thought it would be. The heartwarming and engaging stories will leave a lasting impression. You will not soon forget these children, and you will spend many happy hours reading this book.

Maud: The Life of L.M. Montgomery
I bought this book in anticipation of finding out about Maud's personal life and her thoughts. I was very disappointed. There was nothing in the biography that gave me any insight into the life of my favorite author. I do not recommend this book.
Dull account of a fascinating life
This biography of L.M. Montgomery, marketed towards young adults, has nothing new to offer. It was mostly a rehash of Montgomery's own memoirs, titled "The Alpine Path". Plus, there was surprisingly little information about Montgomery's years after she published Anne. Perhaps it would have been at least an average bio if the author had illustrated some of Montgomery's experiences or parts of her life, but he really didn't even attempt to do that, with the exception of parts of some of her minor romances. If you are looking for a good L.M. Montgomery biography, try "The Alpine Path" or her journals to hear about Montgomery in her own words.
