Montgomery covers a wide array of subjects dealing with challenges upon Christiaity, specifically on the historicity of Christ, God-is-dead theorists, the sufficiency of Scripture for today, and anti-God arguments based on feelings and "I think..."

Not for remedial readers; not for cowards; not for closed-minds.

Definitely for serious scholars; a must for pastors; necessary for apologetics.

A big book with lots of material that might be considered esoteric if read as "light" reading. Definitely take your time with this one.

If you are a "fan" of the fantasy books by Tolkien, C.S.Lewis, Charles Williams or Chesterton, then this is a book worth reading. It is a collection of essays by various authorities in literature, myth and theology. A couple of the contributors were acquainted with either Tolkien or Lewis. The central thesis running through this collection of essays is that mythic symbols found in folk-tales and religious rituals, all express a common, fundamental human yearning for healing and a return to a "lost paradise". The essayists draw on insights from religious phenomenology, Jungian analysis, Christian theology and literary interpretation to tease out the potent mythic symbols found in the writings of Tolkien, Lewis, Chesterton and Williams. Lewis, Williams and Tolkien were associated with one another as drinking partners in an informal literary club known as The Inklings. The essayists "test" their thesis about the power of myth to reveal our search for meaning through the novels of the Inklings. The essayists take us a step further to consider the Christian world-view that informed and shaped the writings of Tolkien, Lewis, Williams and Chesterton. Although a couple of the essays are slightly "dated", any one interested in fantasy literature would find the thesis very absorbing. It should be useful not merely to students of english literature but also to the general reader who might like to know more about the backdrop to The Lord of the Rings, Narnia, etc. Certainly a book to add to your list for reading if you enjoyed the novels!

This book is designed to introduce students of history to the science of historiography. It is divided into two parts. The first part is a survey of historiographical schools of thought. The second part consists of technical essays addressing particular theorists.The text commences with a useful discussion of the many nuances to the term "history", and includes a fascinating excursus into the question of time travel. Greco-Roman, early Christian, Renaissance and Reformation views of history are all outlined. Then the rise of modern historiography is described up to the mid 20th century. From this standpoint Montgomery then proceeds to examine contemporary Christian views of history and seeks to ground ultimate meaning in history in a transcendent perspective. Montgomery defends his case by arguing from the resurrection of Jesus to His deity as the foundation for building a transcendent view. In the remainder of the book Montgomery interacts with various other schools of thought including William James, Marxism, and so forth. The book, although now in need of some updating, serves as a very good survey of the subject, and goads the reader to consider "ultimate" questions when reflecting on historical processes. It is suitable for all students of history at a tertiary level, and would be of interest to historians who wish to understand how Christians approach the subject. All in all a very engaging book.
