Rilke rains on my parade
While audio readings are usually annoying (check out T.S. Eliot reading T.S. Eliot) this particular version benefits from Mitchell's suberb translations and Rilke's vivid imagery. Who among the angels hierarchies....

Explorations in the Teaching of English

A must have for teachers of English
I was first introduced to Stephen Tchudi and Diana Mitchell's "Explorations in the Teaching of English" back in 1990. It is an invaluable tool to secondary-level teachers in particular.

Of all the resource texts for teachers that I have read since then (and I've read MANY), this is by far the best all-around resource for the classroom teacher.

The only problems with it now, in 1998, is that it hasn't been revised. Until a 4th edition is available, this is still a top-notch resource for English/Language Arts teachers - whether you've been teaching for years or are just starting out in the profession.

beautiful poems / sensative translations
If you aren't familiar with the Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda, this collection of his mature work would be a excellent way to get aquainted.

Mitchell's translations are, perhaps, the best english renderings of Neruda. As he did in his Rilke translations, Mitchell has put connotative value above denotative, i.e. the general feeling of a phrase is always preserved, sometimes at the expense of the word-for-word accuracy. This, to me, is the right approach, especially with a poet such as Neruda, who relies so heavily on creating a landscape across a whole work. Like impressionist art, one must view the whole canvas at once - focusing on details will dilute the work to nonsense.

The body of work here represents only a small period of Neruda's mature output. They are not his most important work. But I, like Mitchell, identify with these poems closely. They pay hommage to everyday tasks and objects, and therefore force me to examine my own pedestrian life.

Neruda did not write for poets; he wrote for us. These poems aren't worth anylaizing because they poured out of Neruda's pen like blood from a wound. The closer his lines are to nonsense, they closer they are to our souls.

Book Overview
Only half of working Americans admit they have thought about saving for retirement, and many of those who do try to save, don't know if they are setting aside enough to support themselves in old age. How, then, can employees, their employers, and the public sector boost old-age financial security? The contributors to this volume--economists, financial advisers, and housing and benefits specialists --argue that a strong retirement income system requires attention not only to assets conventionally dedicated to retirement purposes such as pensions, but also to the broader determinants of retiree wealth including housing, health, longevity, and intellectual capital.

This book outlines key problems involved in reducing financial risks in retirement, and then it goes on to propose fresh solutions. These include cash-balance pension plans that combine features of traditional defined benefit pensions and increasingly popular defined contribution plans. Other novel approaches discussed include reverse-annuity mortgages permitting people to benefit from the value of their homes without actually selling them, various forms of annuities, and long-term care insurance. A framework chapter sets the stage by examining what retirement planning can be expected to accomplish and how planning reduces risks by hedging, insuring, and diversifying. This book should be required reading for all who seek to strengthen retirement decision-making and old age protection.

Olivia S. Mitchell is Executive Director of the Pension Research Council and International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Zvi Bodie is Professor of Finance at Boston University, P. Brett Hammond is Manager of Corporate Projects at TIAA-CREF. Stephen Zeldes is Benjamin Rosen Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia University.

Impressively clear and careful
This book is one of the most clear, careful, and rigorous contemporary psychoanalytic theoretical texts around. Mitchell writes with the logic and incisiveness of an analytic philosopher or logician. Although one might wish his depictions of specific clinical examples were a bit more textured and colorful, the theoretical arguments here are some of the best and most clearly stated around. I hope that more contemporary psychoanalytic theorists will become able to achieve this level of theoretical clarity and rigor.

SPADA - Anthology of Swordsmanship
SPADA is a journal that contains some of most current ideas on historical swordsmanship by a number of the field's leading researchers. As a student of historical swordsmanship myself, I think it is an excellent step in the right direction for the progression of this school of study.

As far as the contents of the book are concerned, my hat goes off to the editor, Stephen Hand, for distilling such a diverse, and yet interesting range of papers from the vast array of excellent treatises available.

The book also features some interesting reports on some of the most recent activities undertaken in the WMA community. This provides the reader with a very good 'big picture' perspective into what advances are being made in what fields, and an appreciation for the vast range of people who are now interested in historical swordsmanship.

With regards to it's practicality, the book caters for many different tastes - whether you are interested in the finesse of renaissance fencing, or simply a medieval re-enactor using the trusty 'sword and shield' method. SPADA provides useful insights and a greater understanding of historical methods of fighting.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining a greater appreciation of historical swordsmanship, and anyone who is curious to know what the swordmanship community out there is doing. I rate it as a 'must have' item, and I look forward to more SPADA releases in the future.

cheers
