Better for Drama Students
This book is an alright book to read, if you were acting it out in Drama. If the book was written in regular form, then it would be good for the classrooms. This book was interesting to read but hard to understand. You had to some what jump back and forth between people talking. I feel for the people who had to be put in the concentration camps, and were forced to work against their will just to keep their family members alive. I do not think that people have a right to degrade other humans beings of their own kind or culture.

Miller is inspired...
In this book, not only does Miller define a modern hero, but he also finds distinct parallels between the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare. The book shows an array of impressionable characters who will not only spark emotion in you, but will make you think. There is the everlasting struggle between Good and Evil, Personal belief and Broad interpretation, Individual and Society, and most importantly personal judgement. Could a similar circumstance happen again right here in America? Most definitely. Do people allow themselves to be suppressed and deceived? Absolutely. Does Miller allow his readers to see their selves, peers, and beliefs in a new light? Without a doubt. This book is a piece of history in more ways than one.

L.A. Theatre Works Recording is outstanding!
The last time I read "The Crucible" was in high school back in the 1960s. Over the years I had forgotten much of what it was about, however it wasn't until I listened to the excellent production by L.A. Theatre Works that the raw emotions of this gripping story came to life.

As a few other reviewers here have suggested, this story works better as a play, not just a high school "textbook." I'd suggest that any students who have to read this book also take the time to listen to this recording.

My impression this time is that a merciless, judgmental religion is no true religion. I hope that young readers, or listeners, will realize that this is not the type of religion that Christ intended.

Useful Map
A comprehensive map of the trails (including roads and tracks closed to cars) of the central part of the East Bay Hills. Good detail, including property jurisdictions, topographic (20 foot contour intervals), ground cover, points of interest and conveniences like bus stops. It also includes a good index (of trails), mileage marked on trails, rules and regulations for the various parks, general and contact information for each.

Map is printed one side only, on regular paper.

A great resource for finding and enjoying hikes of any length in the area.

There is also a Northern Section map of the area.

A belated review
The trend in fiction today seems to be in presenting protagonists who are morally flawed, sort of like Ishmael in MOBY DICK, who nonetheless rise above their shortcomings to persevere. This is what John Ramsey Miller has achieved in THE LAST FAMILY.

While certainly not on a par with SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, this novel is certainly a cut or two above the standard fare within the thriller genre, with a high, original concept and one of the best baddies since Hannibal Lecter and Lyle Pointer.

The ending, too, seemed telescoped, gotten over with, unsatisfying, which marred the whole book and largely invalidated what Mr. Miller had worked so hard to set up. The main problem I had while reading LAST FAMILY was that there was not one character in it that I liked.

However, the book has one of the best closing lines I've ever read. I'll certainly give Mr. Miller's next book a chance.

A good read if slightly flawed storytelling
John Ramsey Miller has produced a fine first effort. The evil Martin Fletcher was a captivating character. The story was a page-turner, and except for some slightly flawed elements, the book is a fine example of this genre.

Now, to the flaws. The main character, Paul Masterson, was brought out of a retirement funk (physically, mentally and emotionally) too quickly. More time could have been devoted to Paul's recuperation. Also, some of the peripheral characters were hard to believe (Tod Peoples). Finally, the security used to protect the "last family" was, at times, laughable. Ten ardent fans of any television crime series could have made better plans.

Having said this, I feel as if I am being too hard on Mr. Miller. These flaws are minor and do not take too much away from a fine first effort.

Action, Action, and more Action!
A great debut novel. It was hard to put dowm. Mr Miller has written a very entertaining, action-packed, fast-paced, compelling book. The characters were great, the villain was incredibly scary and believable and Paul Masterson was great, flaws and all. I can't wait to read his next novel. A sequel would be great. I highly recommend this book if you like fast-paced action. But beware if you're squeamish.

Use This On al Queda ?
Good grief, this sort of thing sounds like TORTURE. People become accountants because they failed at something else. And they actually read stuff like this?

Fulltime Accountant /student
This book is very practical and covers all the pertinent information needed for a good foundation in Accounting. The book is easy to understand and gives practical examples and useful exercises.

Response to a reader from Houston
I am an accounting Professor. I am also an accountant. I am so surprised that you thought people became accountants because they failed from something else. It is totally wrong. I am so pround of it. I am 27 year old. I have a good car, have a good house (no debt at all; I just repaid all my mortgage recently.) I do not think that people who are in the field from which you mentioned they failed can make money and have good reputation like I do. Do you know that an auditor money as much as a lawyer (I am a good auditor; please do not talk about other case)

For this book, I found it is very good. I used Prof Skousen's textbook in first accounting class as well as intermediate. My students like them so much. However, they give a little bit too much detail. A professor should adapt it when using in class. This book is a excellent alternative to another book published by Wiley.
