fun sticker book for toddler and preschool set
For a recent trip we bought a large number of sticker and activity books for our toddler. These in the Sticker Stories series were very popular and helped make the trip a pleasant one.

There are seven colorful two-page spreads and one one-page picture on which to place stickers. These show various scenes, including a rural area, an airport, an air show, city air space, a forest fire, an aircraft carrier, outer space and a night scene. There are over 70 reusable stickers to place within these scenes, including jets, space shuttles, satellites, and helicopters.

We will definitely buy more activity books from this series.

Great Buy
This sticker book (along w/ the train one) have been hours of fun. The book has so many stickers. It really sparks the imagination. I'm going to get the truck one for a xmas stocking stuffer.

Best Sticker Book
The Sticker Stories series are the best sticker books around because the stickers are placed in settings (airport, air show, downtown) that allow kids (and parents) to make up stories to go along with the book. Most sticker books simply have text next to an empty "shape" where the sticker should be placed. Also terrific is that the stickers can be re-used over and over again. The "Trains" book is great, too.

Who said we weren't prepared!
Edward Miller's "War Plan Orange" is a well researched and effectively written book on the United states Navy's plan of action against a naval threat from the Empire of Japan. He covers the plan from it's initial design, through it's many changes, and through the point where it was "taken off the self" and executed.
While the sneak attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor might have destroyed a large portion of the physical fleet. One thing they could not touch was this plan and through it's use as the foundation for the US response, the defeat of Japan was assured. Let's hope that we still make plans that prove this effective.

Excellent analysis of military and geopolitical factors.
Author Edward Stanley Miller has expertly distilled the political and military conditions of each era of war planning for the Pacific Theater. Using a plethora of original references to illustrate contemporary reasons for each era of stratagy, Mr. Miller has done a yeoman's job. The text is logical (a difficult task to identify all of the ebbs and flows of the various planning bodies of the time)and informative. The supporting tables, charts and maps are helpful but could have been expanded. Additional maps of Midway, Corregidor and various other key locations would have enhanced the text. Considering the main thrust of this scholarly work however , any lack of illustrative aids is not a major handicap. This book serves as a benchmark for U.S. military and geopolitical stratagy in the greater Pacific area for the first half of the twentieth century.

A revelatory vindication of interwar military plans.
Too often these days both fictional and "factual" scholarly and media representations of military personnel falls into two categories: buffoons or renegades. Edward S. Miller explodes the myth that the interwar military planners were a bunch of buffoons and the actual combatants who won the war against Japan a bunch of brilliant innovators. War Plan Orange reveals the careful, thoughtful debate and study that went into Pacific War Planning for 48 years. In the final analysis, about the only mistake the interwar planners actually made was to underestimate time and resources required (something that happens with every campaign). As to basic strategy, their work was sound. The campaigners of WW2--some of whom helped with interwar planning--did nothing innovative, they simply executed a good plan proven through much wargaming and study.

Children learn of structures in their own backyard.
This book takes the pre-schooler easily through the history and constructions of all types of bridges. As every book should, it encourages the child to look more closely at elements of his/her everyday life and environment. It's great to see non-fiction for children. Great graphic images.

Intelligent, wonderful introduction to bridges for kids
The author truly captivated my child for hours on end with a simple to understand primer on bridge design. The illustrations were magnificent and my daughter can now appreciate the many different types of bridges in her world.

Bravo Savage, Fishman, et al.
I am a 4th year medical student and found this book to be an excellent review of preclinical basic science material. It is concise but detailed enough. It can be used as a quick reference when you don't have time to read a larger source. Highly recommended to add to your library. Just wish there was a new edition.

Lucid, relevant, concise, yet comprehensive
I am a surgeon and found this book lucid and very readable, and at the same time containing more than enough information for principles of surgery examinations for residents. Its critical mode of writing will also serve the surgeon well throughout his/her surgical career and will inculcate a certain critical ability in its reader. My only suggestion for improvement would be a more upto date edition and a slightly better written chapter on biostatistics. Good work Savage et al! Thumbs up all the way!

The Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band

Author: Edward F. Polic
Amazon base price: $142.00
Average review score:

The Glenn Miller AAF Band-Sustineo Alas/I Sustain the Wings
With exquisite expertise and monumental research efforts, this two-volume set is the ultimate discographical and historical source for this legendary musical aggregation.

With very rare exceptions in the chronology, Mr. Polic has succeeded in bringing to light the entire gamut of every aspect of the unit's activities at home and abroad, save for personnel and/or venue details lost to the historical record surrounding a miniscule number of in-person appearances.

Also, there remains some mystery regarding lost masters
of certain sessions known to have been recorded but still lacking a definitive answer regarding their disposition through either civilian or military hands.

The work is easily adaptable to end-user revision as previously unreleased material becomes available through various domestic and foreign labels.

Apart from this definitive source material, Mr. Polic has acted behind the scenes with various record producers within the States and overseas in an effort to bring as much of the civilian and AAF recorded libraries to the buying public as possible...despite some inane obstacles placed in the path by some rather short-sighted label executives.

Mr. Polic's efforts on both fronts are incomparable.

"Must Have" Discography for Glenn Miller AAF Band Collectors
Ed's 2-volume set added an extraordinary new depth of information and understanding in which to listen with renewed enjoyment to my Glenn Miller AAF/AEF band music collection! His complete discography details every single performance by date, location, time, personnel, tunes played,(unit-Orch., Swing Shift, Uptown Hall,Strings with Wings, etc.) vocalists, etc. in the USA, UK and Europe! Then a complete alphabetical tune listing provides a cross-check list of every date that tune was performed!Plus Glenn's letters/enlistment papers, etc.! A monumental effort that is definitive and a "must have".

Poignant, lovingly wrought story of love and friendship.
I am a big fan of Patricia Polacco, she's one of my favorite children's author/illustrators. This book lives up to my expectations: Warm, big-hearted pictures seem to burst from its pages--the images fill your heart and mind like old memories brought vividly to life. Ms. Polacco also places real photographs of real neighbors (in Oakland, California) amidst her soft, rolling illustrations, adding the intimacy of a scrapbook to this tale of interracial/intergenerational friendship and love.

After two boys are mistakenly accused by Mr. Kodinsky's shop (Mr. Kodinsky is a Holocaust survivor, look for the faded blue number on his left arm) their grandmother and mother help them make beautifully decorated eggs to show Mr. Kodinsky that they really are good boys. The ensueing bonds of friendship and treasured memories make for a wonderful family reading experience, especially for children attuned (or who need some exposure) to warmth and the joy of giving.

Another Polacco book that touches your soul
Chicken Sunday is another one of my favorite Polacco books. This is a fabulous and emotionally touching story of an interracial friendship and the children's journey of love and service. Young Patricia (who has written another great episode about her rich and colorful life) and her two best friends Stewart and Winston (who happen to be black) want to buy the boy's gramma (Eula Mae) a hat that she has wanted but could not afford to buy. Since the death of her beloved babushka, Eula Mae also serves as Patricia's surrogate grandmother. The children witness an act of racism on the hat shop owned by the Holocaust survivor Mr. Kodinski. They were going to ask Kodinski for a job to raise the money to buy Eula Mae her favorite hat. Mr. Kodinski sees the children and assumes that they are responsible for the act of violence. Ultimately, the children redeem themselves by making Pysanky eggs for Mr. Kodinski to sell in his store. He tells them the story of his life and then gives the trio the hat. Naturally Eula Mae is thrilled.
Chicken Sunday is named after the chicken dinner that Eula Mae feed the children every Sunday after Church. This is another multi-cultural book teaching children that it is okay to have friendships with people who are different. Incidentally, Patricia remains close to these boys to this very day. It also exposes children to different types of racism. This book has a wonderful lesson for children and adults.

Chicken Sunday
Chicken Sunday is a touching story of friendship and family. Patrica Polacco writes of a childhood recollection. Patricia and two of her childhood friends set out to raise money to buy the beloved Miss Eula an Easter bonnet as a "thank you" for her wonderful Sunday chicken dinners. The three children need to deal with trying to prove their innocence to Mr. Kodinsky and Miss Eula after being wrongly accused of throwing eggs at Mr. Kodinsky's store. The children decide to make Pysanky eggs and hope Mr. Kodinsky will let the children sell the eggs at the hat store. The reader can definitely feel the love between Patricia, the boys and Miss Eula. The realistic drawings and colors are a great addition to this already enjoyable story. Readers of all ages will truly enjoy this book.

The Wilderness Campaign of WWII
I didn't care for this book. I found it difficult to follow with a dry narrative. But as others have said, if you want the facts, they are contained within the pages of this book. It's awful to think that the America high command was so willing to sacrifice the lives of thousand of young GI's for no tactical advantage whatsoever. This costly battle should never have taken place! The men who fought there never flinched from their duty and are due are highest degree of respect and admiration. But it angers me to think the whole thing may not have been necessary in the scope of world events.

A closely detailed study of the brutal fighting
A Dark And Bloody Ground: The Hurtgen Forest And The Roer River Dams, 1944-1945 by Edward G. Miller (an active-duty army ordnance officer) is a closely detailed study of the brutal fighting which took place in the Hurtgen Forest near the end of World War II. Those deadly battles in the Hurtgen Forest have been overshadowed in military history and popular imagination by the more famous "Battle of the Bulge", and yet the gripping depictions of combat, terror, and the revelations of lethal blunders in A Dark And Bloody Ground make it a truly recommended resource for avid students of Military History in general and World War II Studies in particular.

A Dark and Bloody Ground
I purchased this book as part of research I am doing. I found it to be very informative and interesting reading. The author does a wonderful job putting names of men with places throughout the book. I was even able to find reference to my Dad, Capt. Gilbert H. Fuller, 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment.

This book will prove very helpful in my writing of a WWII memorial of my parents and their contributions to the effort.

I would certainly highly recommend it to others.

Photonics Rules of Thumb: Optics, Electro-Optics, Fiber Optics, and Lasers

Very useful & practical for optics/photonics practitioners
Very good book, with a lots of "short cuts" and good "back of an envelop" estimations However, high degree of subject understanding is required when practicing these short cuts. So be careful!

One topics omitted is that of Microscopy (one entry). There are a lots of Rules of Thumb that can help with resolution, magnification, NA or f/#, field of view, depth of field, depth of focus, working distance, etc. Perhaps these can be added to a subsequent edition of the book.

They Learned This Stuff The Hard Way
I'm a great fan of lore books as opposed to textbooks or reference books. Lore books are the ones that contain the things that many people in the field may know, but which they had to learn the hard way, and I like them because they help me learn the easy way!

Miller and Friedman have written a fun and very useful lore book, which has helped a lot of electro-optics people (including me) stay out of some nasty potholes. The book is inexpensive, and if you're building or specifying electro-optical systems of any sort, you should own it.

Great reference book
Easy to use and practical for the engineer and physisist invovlved in optics projects. Will save you the embarassment of not knowing the limits of many common optical devices and systems.
