Stories of Mexico before Disney and Taco Bell
To say that B. Traven captures the essence of old Mexican life outside the big cities, coming from a reviewer who has yet to set foot in Mexico, might seem a bit rich ! But I've heard that his novels and stories are required reading in Mexican schools. That may give more than just a little insight into what Mexicans think of his work. The pleasingly-written stories are well-constructed around themes of interest to everybody---history, poverty, work, love, dreams, animals, and humor. Throughout, Traven's respect for the common people of Mexico shines like an unwavering beacon, though he never idolizes them.

The title piece, about an American stuck away in remote jungles, who reads his way through a library of rare books on pre-Columbian Indian civilizations, and reaps an amazing result, cannot fail to grip readers. Stories like "Effective Medicine", "Assembly Line" and "The Cattle Drive" reflect Mexican life as seen through American (or foreign) eyes, while "Burro Trading" is one of the most humorous stories I've read in a long time. Mexico is no doubt in the grip of the 21st century already---traffic jams, pollution, the Internet, privatisation, globalisation, and sweeping political change. These stories might harken back to a simpler time of less justice but less uncertainty, when social status was more fixed and Mexican ways had not been sullied by MTV, MacDonalds, and Madonna. Mexico is no doubt better off nowadays. The view of Mexico provided by the history of the Conquest and by the broad strokes of Rivera, Orozco, and Sequeiros is not the only one. This group of stories, by a talented, somewhat-mysterious writer, ought to be much better known than they are because of their attention to smaller details on a more daily plane. I strongly recommend THE NIGHT VISITOR.

Riding West is a real keeper!
Ordinarily I skip or only skim prefaces, but that would have been a big mistake in this book which starts right out with a hilarious account of Jim Greer's encounter with Jack Nicholson, the famous actor immediately recognizable to everyone but clueless Jim. Riding West is always entertaining and frequently moving. Greer's description of his metamorphosis from performance auditor for the Colorado legislature to outfitter in the rugged high country of Gunnison County should be of interest to anyone who has ever contemplated reinventing himself in the midstream of life. Greer emerges as a fascinating (if somewhat eccentric) personality and a superb storyteller. I hated to see this book end. Someday, I suspect, it will be made into a film. It has all the earmarks of a classic, one that belongs in the distinguished company of other such classics as A River Runs Through It.

Today's technology in Bible prophecy

Very enlightening book.
This book has a lot of material from the Scriptures, and goes into the descriptions for various present-time inventions, as mentioned in Scripture in relation to the end-times prophetic passages.

It takes quite a bit of concentration and time to digest it all, but it is well worth it when compared to the fictional accounts in prevalence.

It is for the serious student of prophecy, not for someone looking for comfortable entertainment.

Excellent textbook for independent study
I home educate my 12-year-old son, so I need a textbook that gives clear explanations, includes plenty of worked examples, and provides answers to the exercises so I can check his work. This textbook is brilliantly clear and perfectly suited to independent study. Answers are provided for odd-numbered exercises only, but there are so many exercises at the end of each chapter that this has never been a problem for us: we just do all the odd-numbered exercises. Each chapter also has a chapter test and a set of cumulative review exercises at the end, for which answers to ALL of the problems are provided. This is an extremely useful feature for home educators. At the end of the book there is a cumulative test of the whole book, for which answers to every problem are provided, so you can do a thorough review with no uncertainty about marking. You could also use the final test as a pre-test to determine what areas you need to work on, if you're trying to fill in gaps from an unsuccessful school course. I only wish we could find textbooks of this quality for our other subjects!

Best Math Textbook ever!
This is the most beautiful math textbook I've ever seen. To each chapter there are many examples that show clearly what is covered. In the problem solving questions, some are based on real life. The only little problem is that the answers at the back to the exercises are odd-numbered! I use it as a homework textbook for a math programme and I NEVER get stuck on it!

OK, but Shades of Black is better
Yes, the photos in this book are beautiful but I prefer the book "Shades of Black". This book, to me, seems like it copied the concept of Shades of Black and the words lack substance in my opinion. I bought this book for my daughter, wanting to fill her library with images of black children. This book is so boring, even I don't want to read it. I'll keep it because she likes the pictures and the colors...otherwise I'd probably sell it.

Wonderful Book. My little one Loves to hear and look.
This is a fabulous book. I bought it when my daughter was only 4 months old. I have been reading it to her ever since; she is now 19 months. Everytime I say get a book she brings this one. She loves the pictures and the expressions I make when I read it to her. She especially loves the expressions: "Bubbles babies belly" or "Shakes like a bowl of jelly" and then we both shake together. "Honey Color Hands" and then we wiggle our fingers and etc. So in additon to reading you must bring the simple words to life for your child to enjoy it. Its awesome and excellent.

A 10 Star Book!
I bought this book for my then 6 month old niece and my family constantly reminds me how wonderful this book is. It is her absolute favorite! Her grandparents smile each time they tell me that my now 17 month old niece constantly laughs along, kisses the pages and imitates the faces of each photographed baby. My little niece has even attempted to lick the images of the pictured food that accompanies each brown sugar baby photo.

Although I don't have kids, I bought a copy for myself. I plan to have just as much fun with my little tyke as my niece now demonstrates. It's a MUST HAVE for any parent--black or white.

Thanks Chuck! We needed this!
Financial Self Defense is a perfect complement to More Wealthwithout Risk. Before reading Financial Self DeFense, I was one ofthose people who bought brand new cars (I really liked that new car smell) was Insurance Poor (actually a misnomer, I was Insurance Rich, BUT CASH POOR from being overinsured) spent 120% of my income and thought I was doing okay with the few thousand I had put away in my credit union making that pittance of 3 1/2 % (what the heck, that was more than what my bank was payng) and was living from paycheck to paycheck and figured that was okay because so was everyone else that I knew. Now I buy cars 2 1/2 to 3 years old, have better insurance at 50% less cost, earning 15-20% in no-load mutuals and for the first time in years, have money left over instead of having more month left over at the end of my money!

The strategies from Financial Self DeFense came into play recently when I was attending a benefits meeting at work. This was an Insurance Meeting, Health and Dental, and both the benefits director and Insurance Reps were pushing "duplicate coverage" with a lot of emphasis and voice inflection. I asked why we needed "duplicate coverage" when at best we got paid one time, maybe? There was a long pause and no logical explanation so neither I nor the majority of employees elected to sign up for the "duplicate coverage"! If it wasn't for Financial Self DeFense, I would have foolishly signed up for the extra, unnecessary coverages and if it wasn't for my speaking up, so would have most of the others in the room.

There is just so much information in this jam packed easy to read book. You'll find yourself referring to it again and again. I also highly recommend "SUPERSELF" as a personal development and effectiveness equalivalent to Financial Self DeFense. Both are "super books" you'll love them.

Somethingelse that impressed me about th! is book is the emphasis that Mr Givens puts on values and a! ligning them with goals and your dreams. Values are something that are all to often left out in best selling books and in individual lives and a subject that we need to hear more about. Excellent, results, life changing book!

I FEEL FINANCIALLY BULLET PROOF! SAVED OVER $16,000!
I saved more than $16,000 in my first three months after following the "GIVENS STRATEGIES" as outlined in FINANCIAL SELF DEFENSE. Over 1/4 of that was just on car buying. I also learned how to "debt shift" high interest credit cards to lower interest cards and buy and a new home without credit reference and no cash down, straighten out my credit report and get the maximum from my IRA. If you want to make the most of your money, buy this book, read it and then apply everything. It really works!

Charles Givens is the Top Financial Educator for the times!!
Before reading Financial Self Defense, I was suckered in to a 60 month auto loan, because I was told the payments would be lower, that I could afford more car and the interest wouldn't be all that significant! I was one of those people that spent all or most of my money on my lifestyle and I wanted this car in the worst way. (Of course, it was brand new, right out of the showroom)

I saw Charles Givens on the Oprah Winfrey show and was very imressed as he was the only guest that day and held the entire audience and me spellbound for an entire hour! One of money wasters he talked about was buying a brand new car. I felt like he was talking directly to me! I went out that night and bought Financial Self Defense.

Immediately, I began to make extra principal payments. After applying some of the GIVENS STRATEGIES for a few weeks, I had saved enough money to begin making double payments. In short, I was able to pay off a 60 month car loan in 24 months. What was interesting, was the bank manager tried to discourage me saying all of the upfront interest was already paid. Nonsense! I then told him I wanted to cancel the credit life as well and got back a nice refund.

I also found it refreshing that I could use my credit cards to make money when combined with the money market mutual fund strategy that Givens recommends.

I am now investing in No Load Mutual Funds as per the Givens Strategies and for the past 7years have averaged well over 15%.

Most other books are boring and don't offer any type of immediate results. With Financial Self Defense, I got immediate results! Most other books are also too focused on budgeting. With Financial Self Defense, I found that I COULD SPEND MY WAY INTO WEALTH. Before Givens, I always felt that saving, investing and financial management meant deprivation. Not when you GET GIVENIZED! I highly recommend Financial Self Defense and More Wealth Without Risk to live out your dreams instead of just dreaming about living. I also recommend SUPERSELF, to get your personal life under control.

More inspiration than perspiration!
Davis Miller shares the story of his life and the inspiration he has received through his serendipitous encounter(s) with Muhammad Ali. This is a poignant account of a boy's difficult childhood, and the inspiration he receives from his real-life hero, Muhammad Ali. This wonderful book is much less about boxing, and much more about family love. How wonderful it would be to sit in the living room of Muhammad's mother and feel the warmth of her radiating love. The author states that Muhammad Ali would have been a world-class figure even if he had never put on a pair of boxing gloves

A good read.
In this book, Davis Miller describes the influence that Muhammad Ali has had in his life. The reader is shown how, as a teenage boy, Miller came to adore Ali, and how this love had a hugely positive impact upon the author's development as a man. Later, when he meets his hero and shares friendship with him, we see how Miller feels somehow directed in his development as a writer as a result of his relationship with the great boxer. This book is not about Ali, at one point in the book the writer even makes it clear that he is not really interested in the facts of Ali's life, rather it is about the power of Ali to inspire and uplift those people with whom he comes into contact. My only concern about this book is the degree of worship accorded to Ali by the writer. It is difficult for me to 'buy into' the elusive simplicity with which the author appears to view the world, but I chose to read the book anyway and I must say that I enjoyed it. I'd like to finish by saying! that I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the ability of those special, rare people to positively inspire others and make a difference in their lives.

a 'guy's' book women will love
Wonderful story. Tells of how Mr. Ali affected an 'underdogs' life & gave him strength to become a writer- even though he (the author) failed english as a subject in high school. This book is not just for sport/boxing lovers. My bookclub (all women) loved it.

Montesquieu: The Spirit of the Laws
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (1989)
Authors: Charles de Montesquieu, Anne M. Cohler, Basia Carolyn Miller, and Harold Samuel Stone
Amazon base price: $140.00
Average review score:

Not as good as the other reviewers think
The Spirit of Laws is a passionate and eloquent statement of liberalism. But it is only that: a statement. It is not a defence. Montesquieu rails against despotism and carefully spells out the separation of government powers. But, unlike Locke or Mill, he gives little argument for why liberalism should be accepted. And those few sketchy comments he does give (e.g. despotism is bad even for the despot) are unconvincing.

Good book, but not really a philosophical treatise...
Montesquieu doesn't really put forward a unified philosophically based political system here, so don't read it expecting something like The Republic, Leviathan or the Two Treatises. Stylistically this is very like Machiavelli; that is, no overiding system, rather just a long series of pithy pieces of advice for people actually in (or intending to make their own) government. If you've read Machiavelli's Discourses, you'll know what to expect.

I recommend you read at least Locke's Two Treatises and Machiavelli's Discourses before this, and then you'll get the theorectical background behind many of Montesquieu's points. Like Locke he thinks of liberty and republics being fine things, but like Machiavelli he cautions that circumstances should always be taken into consideration, and there is no one form of government that is always the right one for every people at all times, even republics. Because of this most of the book is spend enumerating various circumstances that might come up and appropriate reactions. For example, an early section is spend discussing the effect of climate on the people of that area, and given this, what form of government suits them best.

What this means is that while his work may not stand at a level with The Republic or Leviathan in terms of philosophical merit, if you are looking for knowledge that will be useful in the real world, this book is probably superior to those.

I definitely recommend you check this book out. It's imposing length is split into much easier to digest mini-chapters, so it doesn't seem as long as it is, and the use of examples makes it more interesting than many of the other drier works of political philosophy you might come across.

a must read for the world's democracy advocates
an understanding of Montesquieu is critical for today's emerging democracies, in that he was one of the first to recognize the importance of securing the liberty of the governed with the aid of reason, such as by constitutional design and by the rule of law. The probelm is that there is a caveat to his theory: democracy may not be the best form of government for every country.
