In Elements of Political Economy, James Mill describes his ideas (in the Schumpeterean sense) using economic thought and economic analysis. He uses examples of the Industrial Revolution (industry) and the agricultural industry surrounding England. The utilitarian economist, father of John Stewart Mill, discusses his theory of velocity of circulation of money, the interest from capital as the result of wages of labor (against Ricardian theory), and many other economic principles. James Mill historically writes "the aggregate of commodities, taken all together, there is neither fall nor rise, (3rd edition)" an issue later paraphrased by Karl Marx in his Das Kapital (3rd edition). Sometimes difficult to understand, but a good book from a utilitarian, Ricardian, "Classical theory on political economy" perspective.

Very plausible. A fast-paced thriller. A page turner. I read it in one flight from Alabama (Roll Tide) to L.A.. The boy was too bright, the dad wasn't. But it kept me entertained, and I recommend it. Go for it!!! F

This is not a thrill-a-minute novel but it is interesting and well written. A nominee for the Supreme Court has to undergo the depredations of political opponents and the revelations of his past in order to be confirmed by the Senate. Probably a bit overlong but worth reading. The author wrote other best sellers, as well. He writes with clarity and compassion. The characters are well defined and the good guys win in the end. Nothing earth-shaking here but something entertaining and off the beaten track.

I bought this mostly for Ecclesiastes, and unfortunately, Juliet Mills' interpretation is absolutely wrong. This is one of the most beautiful, realistic and world-weary books in all of literature and she reads it as an angry, old testement prophet, or worse, a hell and brimstone fundamentalist preacher. Michael York is far too bright and hopeful for the Psalms. I don't think these people understood the true nature of the writings they were reading. A very shallow, TV evangelist approach to the Bible.
