Very good book for any age, any time.
I first read this book a few years ago, when I was in about fourth or fifth grade. Being a tomboy at that age and even a little now, it was great to read a book about a girl who didn't sit around and "play dollies" and put on make-up. It was also neat to read about this feminist young girl, working for equal rights even though she was just a kid.

I like the ideas that this book presents. I reccommend it to any kid to read, boy or girl, any age. I think most kids will understand the point the author is trying to make-- that females deserve the same opportunities as males, and that not all women and girls think the same way-- without being annoyed by obnoxious characters and corny writing. I think it's a funny book, both because of how interesting Barbara's writing is and how dated it is, from the 70's. (hehe..) But it still makes a good point and is fun to read.

Adults might like this book, too. It isn't written in a patronizing way and isn't boring. I've read it at least ten times, and I'm seventeen. Just last night I dug it out of a box of my old books to read again. But I have a tendency to do that a lot, anyway. :)

My favorite
I have 10 nieces and nephews who all love to read. I remembered this book as being my favorite growing up. I'm ordering it so they can read it too!! As a kid I identified with the book because I was so into sports. I'm going to read it again when it comes in! Hope you enjoy it too.

Goldilocks for a 3 year old
This is the story of goldilocks & the three bears written very simply with repeated words & colorful drawings. My not yet 3 year old loves to count the chairs, birds & porridge bowls. He's learning the hard & soft, going up the stairs & such. I would think that this book would be a little dull for an older kid, although it's easy to read. But definitely a keeper for us right now.

Manna for chart hounds
An odd but fascinating book that shows the week-by-week positions of the singles that made Billboard's Hot 100 chart in the form of line graphs. Aside from the fact that you'll need a magnifying glass to read these charts, this is a nifty reference source for chart buffs and music historians. Superceded in large part by the Joel Whitburn books of Billboard chart reprints.

Sensible and Realistic
This book addresses the reality of what children actually go through as they learn to read. The simple and positive text introduces children to basic pre-reading skills that they will soon or have already encountered, and lays out the different strategies they will use as they learn to read, without preaching or talking down to them. Phonics is included, but we all know that children use other clues when beginning to read, and those, realistically, are included, too. Many colorful and warm illustrations help make the more visually oriented child feel at home (my younger son.) This book did not teach my eldest to read. His teacher did. And he did. In Japanese. Having been raised bilingually, he was not very confident in his success in reading and writing in Japanese. However, many of the concepts outlined in this book (except phonics) can be applied to reading in Japanese, and he found that he was indeed, ready to read. Once he bagan to read in Japanese in school, he suddenly began to read in English, as well. Now his younger brother, who is not so verbal in either language, is enjoying this book.

A great book about an excellent way to approach reading
This book was exactly what it took to get my 5-year-old interested in learning to read. While it does employ some of the concepts of whole language learning, it also stresses phonics in a balanced approach to teaching children to read. For us it gave my son confidence to realize he really was ready to become a new reader. He especially liked the questions at the beginning of the book which indicated he WAS ready to learn to read, and also the activities at the end of the book which included passages that he could already "read". A wonderful choice for parents who are open-minded enough to realize that phonics and whole language methods can be used together to teach children to read.

Terrific for a child eager to learn to read
This little book points out the many ways your child is already reading. It is a tremendous confidence builder for a child who is ready to learn to read in earnest. My 5 year old has read and re-read it and it provided a terrific gentle introduction to the subject.
