Recommended for students of the French Revolution.
Leonard Bourdon: The Career Of A Revolutionary 1754-1807 is a superb work of historical research illustrating the ways in which one individual was affected by, and influenced, the long and turbulent course of the French Revolution. Leonard Bourdon also rescues an active, intelligent and interesting man from a prolonged period of scholarly neglected, redeeming his reputation from being perceived as a particularly cruel and revolutionary terrorist. Scholar and historian Michael Sydenham follows Bourdon's political career from the final days of the old monarchy through Bourdon's active participation in the Revolution. Bourdon was always aware that political development must be accompanied by educational change, and his lifelong interest in education is an integral part of his story. Bourdon left remarkably few personal papers. During the painstaking exploration for details of his life, several critical as well as unfamiliar events of the period have been illuminated, suggesting that similar misrepresentations of other relatively unknown French revolutionaries have distorted our current understanding of this dynamic period, crucial to the growth and development of modern democracy. Leonard Bourdon is highly recommended reading for students and scholars of the French Revolution.

The Life We Are Given

Adventures in living.
Mahatma Gandhi said that we must be the change we wish to see in the world. Through the Integral Transformative Practice (ITP) set forth in this 221-page handbook, George Leonard and Michael Murphy show us how to change the world by first changing our own hearts (p. 194). Leonard is a founder of the Human Potential Movement. Murphy is a founder of the Esalen Institute. Together they have created a lifelong program in THE LIFE WE ARE GIVEN leading to the transformation of body, mind, heart and spirit.

This is by no means a quick-fix, self-help book. Most of us realize only a small part of our human potential, and as a result we live only a fraction of the life we are given (p. 170). Not surprisingly, in our fast-paced culture, we turn to quick-fix programs, "crash" diets, weekend workshops, and audiotapes in our quest for self-knowledge and spiritual awakening (p. 27), rather than making a longterm commitment to strive for our highest potentials. Leonard and Murphy show that it is only through a lifelong practice of affirmations (pp. 53-72), Japanese "kata" (pp. 73-106), meditation (pp. 107-116), exercise (pp. 117-131), and nutrition (pp. 133-143) that we are able to realize our true potential for an extraordinary life. "How do you become more intellectually interested and focused? Practice. How do you become a more loving, caring, emotionally expressive person? Practice. How do you develop a sense of community and social service? Practice" (p. 45). The practices they offer here are also easy to integrate into the current American lifestyle ("the householder's path").

For anyone interested in stepping onto the path of self improvement, skip the multitude of self-help-quick-weight-loss books promising overnight results, and invest your time and money in this handbook instead, and then practice.

Michael Leonard Paintings

Pensively sensual works
Michael Leonard's art is well known to admirers of Figurative Art and this difficult to find book of his paintings justifies his place of importance in the currrent resurgence of representational art. Leonard finds beautiful metaphors in the sanctity of the locker room and allows us a quiet view of young men ending or beginning physical nurturing of the body beautiful. The lighting effects are luminous and the brushwork is fastidious. Much is left to the viewer as to the interpretation of these paintings but Lincoln Kirstein's commentary adds much to the pleasure of this book.

very handy manual
i found your book excellent in bedside procedures and normal values but unfortunately i have not found enough guides in clinical pictures (diagnosis)and full investigations for separate disease entities to help in query bizzare clinical presentations in our wards

Great reference book
I highly recommend this text for third year medical students. It properly assumes that the third year medical student knows next to nothing about clinical medicine and proceeds to explain abbreviations, commonly used drugs, procedures, protocols on rounds, and a whole host of useful things needed to survive and thrive in the hospital setting. I used it not only in medical school, but during my residency as well (especially during the first two years), especially when learning critical care medicine. Definitely shell out a few bucks and buy this book before you start your clinical rotations during medical school.

The best since M.A. Krupp's Physician's Handbook 21st ED.
It takes seconds to find what you need to know, and as you see from the table of contents it truly is a fantastic all-in-one must buy, must have for the serious medical student or pharmacist intern. This book will make you shine.

Great source!
The book is easy to follow and understand and has simple diagrams that complement the reading.

A beautifully done and accessible neuroanatomy text.
This is one of several books I bought while in med school studying neuroscience. This is a beautiful text, with wonderful drawings, good use of catscans and MRIs, and an excellent layout. It helped me considerably to learn the anatomy of the spinal cord and brain. Since I am deaf and they couldn't deal with it in a classroom (looking down at microscopes does not make lipreading easy or help my interpreters)...they sent me to the morgue with medical students and nursing students. This book provided the background I needed to do well in this situation, because the drawings were explicit enough to be recognizeable when presented with the real thing. I also use this book with deaf students who I hope to encourage to go into science. The drawings always get them interested enough to ask questions, and that is what good science is about. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

Well rounded
John H., Phd Martin constructed a well-rounded neuroanatomical textbook. The material covers every anatomical aspect of the n.s. including chapters on embryonic development and vascular anatomy. The text is continuously tied in with detailed images (ct, mri, & myelin stained slices of c.n.s.). The reading material is exceptionaly easy for its class. The book gets very detailed, and will make you a leading source on neuroanatomy. Author comment: "Even though this book came out a few years back in '96, the material today is still very similar and they do not get any user-friendlier."

The *kayters* review
This was a precious book that I bought to go with our small What Dogs Do coffee table book. I decided to read it because it was so short and I wound up really enjoying it and even reading one of the observations out loud to my husband because it reminded me so much of our cat! This is not a novel or a wonderful work of literature, but the thoughts and observations about all things feline are wonderfully on the mark! Anyone who shares life with a cat will be sure to appreciate this cute little book.

Cat-egorically Terrific
This short book makes you feel like you have nine lives. From the beautiful minimalist drawings to the quiet eloquent words, it is a great and affordable gift. It appeals not only to cat lovers but to animal (and people) lovers everywhere. Every page brings a gentle and touching surprise.

A Charming Book
This is a charming book, wonderfully witty and engaging text, beautiful drawings that capture the moods and inner life of every cat I've ever met. I'm planning to give it as Christmas presents to every cat-lover I know. Really a treat!

Imagine That!
The mostly lighthearted adventures of a nerd, Imagining Heather was a charming tale of company life and the perils of figuring the best route through life. I thorougly enjoyed the slightly bemused tone of the protagonist, and his befuddled heroism. The book's gentle humor made me smile, with occasional outbursts of laughter. If you can relate to Dilbert but are socially adept enough to have a family, you're going to enjoy this book.

ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!!! A must read!!!!
Michael Leonard is hilarious and extremely witty. I found myself having to pause to laugh hysterically more times than I can count! If you have ever worked in an office, I'm sure you can identify with the main character. I felt like he was writing about me! You owe it to yourself to read this book. Do yourself a favor and pick it up today, you won't be disappointed.

The Evolution of Men's Club
Originally published in 1981, the Men's Club is set in the Bay Area during the late 70s. A psychologist named Kramer gathers a small group of men in their mid-to-late thirties together to discuss guy stuff. The club starts out, writes Michaels, "trying to recapture high-school days. Locker-room fun. Wet naked boys snapping towels at each other's genitals." There's some drinking and pot smoking before the men migrate into more dangerous territory-a refrigerator stocked full of food for tomorrow's luncheon - a woman's group hosted by Kramer's wife.

Mixed in with the bacchanalia are men talking about themselves. These aren't men talking about sports or power tools, but strange, sometimes sad, stories about their relationships with women - sometimes their wives -- who they've connected with, but are still trying to process. Michaels does a satisfying job tying up the story with a cohesive ending and the writing is terse and engaging.

Also, it's not an especially dated book, because men haven't evolved much in the last 20 years.

A truly funny novel that brings news from the gender wars
Seven men, some acquainted and some strangers, meet one night to begin a club. This won't be a working man's club named for a large four-legged mammal or a toney businessman's city athletics and dinner club; instead it's a club dreamt up by a psychotherapist, modeled on the women's consciousness raising groups of the 1970s. Without an agenda, the men immediately focus on one subject -- women. They tell stories of bafflement, need, love, abuse, and marriage. They listen and they argue. They eat and drink and smoke and fight and break things. Their stories are outrageous and they sound true. Most of all, these men pay serious attention to one another. Michaels's masterful prose brings each man to life with gestures and dialogue and unforgettable stories. This is a small novel, but it brings important news from the gender wars. Women should read it, because it is both amusing and horrifying. These are characters you can hate and love just as if you knew them. In fact, you do know them. They are your brother, father, son, husband, lover, or friend.

The book is a no-nonsense, fact-filled resource.
I have a homestead in Peru (near Cusco / Machu Picchu). I wanted to raise my own meat; thus I bought a dozen chicks. As life dictates they grew and the day came for eating. I gave the first chicken to my housekeeper to kill and clean. She smothered the poor bird by holding its beak closed and plugging the nostrils. The suffocation process took about two struggling minutes. Not a good way to kill a bird, I thought. The second chicken was given to my hired hand, and he killed the bird by stretching its neck three times. Yes, a better method, but really, what do the professionals recommend? Thus, I initially bought "Storey's Guide to Raising Poultry", to find the most humane way to kill poultry.

The book is a no-nonsense, fact-filled resource. Written for those who are serious about raising poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, game birds and other poultry). Written by a professional poultryman, the book covers nutrition, disease, immunity, housing, breeding and management in a comprehensive manner.

The writing is clear, terse and complete. The diagrams and drawings are good. The book has a superb index, along with a good glossary, a list of associations, an appendix that gives you sources of supplies and equipment, and much more.

The descriptions of the breeds of poultry could be better. The one paragraph given to various breeds is inadequate for those who are unfamiliar with breeds (Wyandottes, Australorps, Araucans etc.). The feed section is bias towards commercially packaged feeds, and gives little to no information on homemade mashes. In Peru, we must make our own mash, or go without.

All-in-all, Storey's Guide it is a lot more book than I initially needed. But, after reading through the book, I was both impressed and intrigued enough to consider raising other types of poultry. Hum, maybe turkeys are next. I did use Mercia's recommended method for killing chickens (sever the jugular and insert knife for debraining) and must confess that killing a chicken, regardless of the methodology, is not my preferred hobby. Strongly Recommended

If you only get ONE book for your poultry Library, THIS ONE
I picked this up at the public library to skim over and take back but after having it for just one week, I must have my own copy. The wonderful knowledge that is presented in easy to understand directions from all aspects of poultry. The nice part is they have instructions how to build most any poultry equipment you might need and this would be great for anyone, especially home schoolers.
I am getting my copy.

Good scale book
Covers all the scales you will need for playing guitar. Graphics are easy to understand and are presented in a format that is easy to memorize. I recommend this book for anyone who has had problems learning or understanding how to use scales and what they are used for.

Nice book for a beginner
Now the problem I have with this book is that it is supposed to be an easy to use but complete guide for the more aware guitar player. Well it is quite easy to use but it does not by any means introduce you to all of the scales and it gives only one playing shape a scale instead of the five required to cover the entire fretboard. So this one is more of a guide for the beginner really only the first chapter will not be easy to decode for someone starting to study scales.

Great, easy to understand info at a bargain price!
I found the book to be quite good. It does a pretty good job of explaining modes and how they relate. I've had a lot of guitar books. This is one I would recommend. Some other good books are The Uncle Tim series and The Guitar Guru books. The graphics are very clear and easy to understand. For (the price), you absolutely can't go wrong buying this book.
