:)
This is the third book in the Matched in Montana series. Nurse Rebecca O'Reilly swore that she would never get involved with another doctor, ever. Being hurt by one was enough for her Thank you very much. Rebecca knew she was safe from falling for her boss Dr. John Saville. The man was cold, unfeeling, and had an ego the size of Texas as far as she was concerned.

Dr. John Saville has never had an easy life and has worked hard to get to where he is today. John was attracted to his nurse, but her actions and sharp tongue clearly show him that she is not the leas bit interested in him, as a matter of fact, he is sure that she dislikes him for one reason or another. Only when an emergency hits there small town Rebecca and John are forced to work together for the sake of others. Rebecca sees John in a new light and even feels herself being drawn to him. Whether they will have a future is anyone's guess.

I liked John for his compassion and professionalism. Rebecca, on the other hand, was a very judgemental person. She was quick to offer insults and to never give anyone the benefit of the doubt. I realize that her insecurities are from the hurt that she suffered in the past, but she still got on my nerves. If it wasn't for the town matchmaker these two would probably have never had a chance for a happy future.

I tried...
I tried to stick with this book, hoping it would get better, but I finally gave up on page 87. The story made no sense in a lot of ways, the heroine kept doing stupid stuff and I didn't like the hero at all. I really like Meagan McKinney's books, usually -- what a BIG disappointment.

This book is awesome!
Another 5 stars for McKinney! I loved this book so much that I can't help but read it 5 times more. The hero and heroine's lovestory is very titillating and facinating that I couldn't quite put the book down. I have read some of McKinney's novels before and I have to say that this is her best one yet.

Another excellent book by Meagan McKinney!
Just when you think you can't take it anymore, Meagan McKinney gives you the fairy tale ending you're hoping for. This is another excellent book with a sexy, erotic hero and a beautiful, bewitching heroine. McKinney's descriptions make you feel like you are actually there. The time period is hoop skirts in the south. McKinney loves to make the couples hate each other so much that they cross the line to extreme love and lust. You can't put this book down until you find out what happens! You have to love this book.

Not her usual
I also have read all of Meagan's previous books and am a devoted fan but this was not her best work. If this is your first time reading her work, don't hold it against her. I had a difficult time finishing this book. It did not flow well and she did not develop the characters enough. I would highly recommend any of her earlier books but I do not recommend this one.

AN OK BOOK!
I enjoyed reading this book, and would suggest it to others looking for an entertaining novel . . .If you want to read a book that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift! This book was edited by Lupus specialist Dr. Matt Morrow too, and has the latest information on that disease. ..A perfect gift for someone who started college late in life, fell in love too late in life, is living with any illness, or trying to understand a loved one who is. . .A gift to be cherished forever

geisphobia
While Lord Trevallyan's reason for not wanting to have a relationship with Ravenna --- he's resisting fate --- is plausible, it gets a zero for dramatic effect. Trevallyan is also in constant battle with his hangup about their age difference (rightfully so) which just made him seem insecure. In turn, Ravenna hates Trevallyan for sending her off to an English school where she was shunned and ridiculed. Again, plausible, but boring. Ravenna's story within the story I simply found distracting from the real story and not particularly interesting.

Having no great obstacle but stubbornness and resentment, the story just dragged on and on. Still, no matter how thin the plot, if told well, any story can be great. Unfortunately, this story just did not catch my imagination.

And last but not least --- I know it's essential to the plot, but if I had to read the word "geis" one more time . . .

disappointed...
i didnt enjoy this book. wasnt horrible, but i didnt think it was one of her best. i thought she could ve done better.

Lovely and Lyrical
I loved this book. It's very melodramatic, but it works because it is beautifully written. This is one of her best books. It's very much like Lions and Lace and Fair is the Rose as it is set in a different time and setting than the usual stories of this genre.

Should Have Read The Reviews First
There are several reasons why I hated this story, but I will only discuss my top three.

First, we have the typical hero with a tragic past who thinks it is perfectly fine to inflict misery on others because of it. He will imprison the heroine, touch her body at will ignoring her protests, using her as a pawn in his plans for revenge and the hell with who he hurts in the process.

Second, we have a heroine who is described as having a strong will but we rarely see it. Anytime she tries to stand up to the hero, she melts from his scorching kisses. I just hate authors who use this whole scenerio. It's kind of insulting to our sex. If a guy has taken you prisoner in his home, stolen a family heirloom from you, and informed you that he was going to get revenge on your father by making you his concubine, would your resistance against him disappear once he kissed you?

Last of all, I just did not see what deep feelings they had for each other at the end of the story. When I read a story by Lisa Kleypas, Mary Jo Putney, Karen Monk or Jo Beverly, I have no doubt in my mind that the hero and heroine genuinely love each other. When this story ended, I mostly felt sorry for the heroine. Whatever assertiveness she has will eventually be crushed by the hero.

Disappointing.
This is the first time I am writing about a book I didn't like.I just finished reading it and I did enjoy it until the moment Brienne gave into Avenel again after she knew he only seduced her to get even with her father. What a spineless woman! Where was her self respect? That she even spoke to Cumberland and Rose after was ridiculous, since they knew of his plans all along....PLEASE! I forced myself to finish the book and then pitched it.

One of my favorites!
This is the first book by Meagan McKinney that I have read and I absolutely loved it. In fact I am reading it for the 3rd time now.

I have to disagree with the comments in previous reviews that Brienne is too weak and that the book is offensive. One has to remember that this story took place in 1780. Women didnt have the voice that we do today.

I think Avenel is one of the most interesting and attractive characters I have come across in a long time. Yes, he is very dominating but in a way it adds to his charm.

I think this story was well written and I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good romance novel!

Wanting the fairytale, but not getting it.
This author may have fairytale endings to many of her books, but fairytale is far from what this author lives. In a description of what this author likes to do with her spare time, she states that she likes to spend time with her two sons. She also has two stepsons who she will not even consider her stepsons, and this is quite evident to both of them in their young lives. She writes of the finer things in life, but money and material things will not make you happy in real life, Ms. McKinney.

Started Out Interesting -- But the 'hero' is never redeemed
The premise of Moonlight Becomes Her sounded interesting enough and it started out interesting as well, but it does not continue through with its promise. Her hero and heroine never seem to emotionally connect and I can not figure out how he is even a hero in the first place. Rafe Belloch isspoiled [and]treats people like dirt -- his 'love' interest Mystere (who has it bad enough as it is) included.

I have mixed feelings
The story line was great! And you can't beat the first scene- Rafe is riding in his private coach down a poorer side of town when he is stopped by Lady Moonlight and her bandits. Rafe is robbed and to slow him down, plus for a little bit of fun she has him to strip down to his underwear (she actually wants him naked but her bandits stop her at the underwear!). He is humiliated and vows to return the favor to her one day! Great first scene!!! But from there it was tough reading for me. Maybe it's just me but...I had a hard time staying focused and interested until well through the middle of the book. I didn't put it down because I knew it would get better and it did. I liked both of the main characters- Rafe Belloch made his fortune from the railroad but has a vendetta to settle with NY's aristocrates. Mystere was an orphan plucked from the streets by Paul Rillieux to be claimed as his debutante niece to work the NY aristocrates stealing their most valuable jewels right from under their noses. 2 years later Rafe and Mystere meet during a NY Society Social. Is she the one? Rafe vowed he would never forget those eyes, that body. It really is a good story. This was my first Meagan McKinney book and I do look forward to reading others. So read it for yourself-- See what you think..... P.S. I wasn't satisfied with the epilogue. It had a lot to be desired for me.

BORING!
This book was boring. What is meagan Mckinney doing, her older books, My Wicked Enchantress were good but these new ones are tiresome. I basically skimmed the entire book and the only reason why I didn't stop reading was to give her a chance.

PLEASE try to write how you used to HISTORICAL romances with some degree of fun!

After this book I may no longer buy.

ho-hum formula writing
"Still of the Night" is the first book by Meagan McKinney that I have read. In it I encountered a "woman's blend" of romance, mystery, and suspense that seemed initially engaging. There was also a big element of "action/violence" that seemed to have strayed from another genre.

McKinney's Louisiana "downhome" sayings are fresh and unjaded, and her language escapes cliches. The love/sex scenes are well portrayed with the right touches of physical allure and emotional involvement.

In spite of her deft phrases and skillful dialogue, I found "Still of the Night" too formulaic, as if conforming to a careful outline with a strange spin intended to appeal to women and men alike. From its promising opening pages, I expected another kind of book. I missed the integrity of a full-hearted, cleaner romantic novel it could have been.

Marvelous!
This is the first book I have read by Meagan McKinney, and I have to tell you that it won't be the last! Suspenseful and just the right amount of romance for my taste. Stella de St. Vallier is the main character who lives at an old manor in Louisiana. She is entangled in many webs of intrigue, darkness, and disbelief. She is also searching for the 200 plus year old treasure that is supposedly hidden in her manor, Shadow Oaks. She lives with her great-aunt Rose and friend Leora, a.k.a. Maman. Just wait till you get to the end, you won't believe it!!! Don't miss this fantastic read!

Watch out Woodiwiss and Lindsay, Ms McKinney's here!
I found that the Fortune Hunter was a very different kind of read than I initially expected. I enjoyed it very much, but I found Lavinia's lack of spunk in some of her Edward confrontations a little irritating however realistic it may have been. I HATED the way she so readily volunteered to be Edward's mistress despite all her hard work at not becoming just that very thing. I found Edward hard and unwielding in a reprehensible sort of way, not because of his disbelief in spirit mediums but his constant ridicule and reproach of Lavinia's character...It was still a very fascinating read and I was loathe to reach the end...Perhaps a rewrite of the end is in order Ms. McKinney??

A New McKinney Convert
I just discovered Megan McKinney at my used book store and must disagree with some of your reviewers. While Edward was very rough in his opinion of Lavinia, his attitude reflected that of most disbelievers of the time. In addition I felt McKinney laid the groundwork for his emotional reaction based on his own childhood and relationship with his family. I admired Lavinia for her strength in standing up to him and his abuse, and for her determination to do whatever she had to do to protect her family. Finally, the sexual tension between Edward and Lavinia was delicious.

Not Meagan's best
I'm usually a fan of Meagan's writings but after reading the reviews on The Fortune Hunter, I was afraid to read it fearing the worst. But after finishing it, I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it despite a few very disturbing scenes where the heroine was verbally attacked by the hero. The language used was to the point of being objectionable and I believe caused many readers to dislike the hero. To the end, the hero did not redeem himself and ended frustrating the readers. There were good points to this book though, which I believe earned it 4 stars. First of all, Meagan Mckinney is an excellent writer and kept a good pace with twists and turns throughtout the book. One kept looking for the dark hero to redeem himself and was a great disappointment when he did not. Perhaps Meagan can rewrite the book and build up the hero's character.

The Merry Widow wasn't merry or even partially happy!!
This book was so disappointing I had to force myself to finish. Meagan McKinney has never disappointed me this way (well, My Wicked Enchantress was pretty bad).

Noel Magnus, a newspaper tycoon, eludes his inner demons by traipsing across the artic looking for a missing explorer and a mystical opal, while wooing and seducing Rachel, the proprietor of a saloon on Herchel Island.

Noel promises love but not marriage. Rachel longs for warmer climates, residence in a house with a white picket fence and being adorned in dresses worn by Godby's models; and nights of passion, but after the ring is installed on her finger. But Noel believes Rachel is protected from a cruel society by remaining in the Artic. He's promising nothing but frigid temperatures and licentious affair.

Thus Rachel sets out to resolve the problems herself by creating the widow of Noel Magnus, whom New Yorkers'presume to be dead. But while the widow inherits wealth, respectibility, and comfort, she also inherits the haunting secrets of the Magnus family and must fight to conquer Noel's demons with love and understanding or lose both herself and Noel to what she considers a 'life without a life'.

On a personal note, Noel was brooding, depressing, and downright abusive. I found nothing heroic, sensual or strong about this man. Yes, he loved the outdoors and was an expert in Artic expeditions, but a polar bear exhibited more warmth and affection than Noel, and polar bears are flesh eaters!!

Happy readers!!

Though not her best it's pretty good
I think some of the reviews below are overly harsh... I would give this book a B- to B grade. It's fun in its way. The settings (Arctic and Gilded Age New York) are interesting, and so are the characters. The premise is unique. There are some cliches (orpahned children and kindly housekeeper) but the story is suspenseful throughout. I did not mind the hero's harshness, given what the heroine had done I thought she was lucky he didn't sic the police on her. I enjoy a dark romance with lots of tension between the hero and heroine and this book had that. I did think that all the stuff with the painting at the end was predictable and silly. But overall I found this book entertaining. Not on the order of Lions & Lace, Fair is the Rose, or A Man to Slay Dragons, but still worth reading for McKinney fans.

Best romance and suspense you will read this year!
I have long been a fan of Meagan McKinney yet she continues to get better! I love romance but it has been awhile since I have come across a book that grips me from start to finish. For the first time in months I found myself sacrificing all hours to finish The Merry Widow. McKinney manages to create male characters that are dark, passionate and fierce - and yet men you love. Her heroines are gutsy and rich in character. History and locale come to life. If I were to offer any criticism of this wonderful novel, it would be on a passage where the main characters are finally reunited. I was disappointed at the lack of excitement. I had been reading fast and furious to this point and yet was let down with the almost casual description. However, with that singular criticism, this book is the best one I've read ( and I've read several!) in months. Enjoy, Enjoy!
