Having no great obstacle but stubbornness and resentment, the story just dragged on and on. Still, no matter how thin the plot, if told well, any story can be great. Unfortunately, this story just did not catch my imagination.
And last but not least --- I know it's essential to the plot, but if I had to read the word "geis" one more time . . .

First, we have the typical hero with a tragic past who thinks it is perfectly fine to inflict misery on others because of it. He will imprison the heroine, touch her body at will ignoring her protests, using her as a pawn in his plans for revenge and the hell with who he hurts in the process.
Second, we have a heroine who is described as having a strong will but we rarely see it. Anytime she tries to stand up to the hero, she melts from his scorching kisses. I just hate authors who use this whole scenerio. It's kind of insulting to our sex. If a guy has taken you prisoner in his home, stolen a family heirloom from you, and informed you that he was going to get revenge on your father by making you his concubine, would your resistance against him disappear once he kissed you?
Last of all, I just did not see what deep feelings they had for each other at the end of the story. When I read a story by Lisa Kleypas, Mary Jo Putney, Karen Monk or Jo Beverly, I have no doubt in my mind that the hero and heroine genuinely love each other. When this story ended, I mostly felt sorry for the heroine. Whatever assertiveness she has will eventually be crushed by the hero.
I have to disagree with the comments in previous reviews that Brienne is too weak and that the book is offensive. One has to remember that this story took place in 1780. Women didnt have the voice that we do today.
I think Avenel is one of the most interesting and attractive characters I have come across in a long time. Yes, he is very dominating but in a way it adds to his charm.
I think this story was well written and I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good romance novel!

PLEASE try to write how you used to HISTORICAL romances with some degree of fun!
After this book I may no longer buy.
McKinney's Louisiana "downhome" sayings are fresh and unjaded, and her language escapes cliches. The love/sex scenes are well portrayed with the right touches of physical allure and emotional involvement.
In spite of her deft phrases and skillful dialogue, I found "Still of the Night" too formulaic, as if conforming to a careful outline with a strange spin intended to appeal to women and men alike. From its promising opening pages, I expected another kind of book. I missed the integrity of a full-hearted, cleaner romantic novel it could have been.

Noel Magnus, a newspaper tycoon, eludes his inner demons by traipsing across the artic looking for a missing explorer and a mystical opal, while wooing and seducing Rachel, the proprietor of a saloon on Herchel Island.
Noel promises love but not marriage. Rachel longs for warmer climates, residence in a house with a white picket fence and being adorned in dresses worn by Godby's models; and nights of passion, but after the ring is installed on her finger. But Noel believes Rachel is protected from a cruel society by remaining in the Artic. He's promising nothing but frigid temperatures and licentious affair.
Thus Rachel sets out to resolve the problems herself by creating the widow of Noel Magnus, whom New Yorkers'presume to be dead. But while the widow inherits wealth, respectibility, and comfort, she also inherits the haunting secrets of the Magnus family and must fight to conquer Noel's demons with love and understanding or lose both herself and Noel to what she considers a 'life without a life'.
On a personal note, Noel was brooding, depressing, and downright abusive. I found nothing heroic, sensual or strong about this man. Yes, he loved the outdoors and was an expert in Artic expeditions, but a polar bear exhibited more warmth and affection than Noel, and polar bears are flesh eaters!!
Happy readers!!

Dr. John Saville has never had an easy life and has worked hard to get to where he is today. John was attracted to his nurse, but her actions and sharp tongue clearly show him that she is not the leas bit interested in him, as a matter of fact, he is sure that she dislikes him for one reason or another. Only when an emergency hits there small town Rebecca and John are forced to work together for the sake of others. Rebecca sees John in a new light and even feels herself being drawn to him. Whether they will have a future is anyone's guess.
I liked John for his compassion and professionalism. Rebecca, on the other hand, was a very judgemental person. She was quick to offer insults and to never give anyone the benefit of the doubt. I realize that her insecurities are from the hurt that she suffered in the past, but she still got on my nerves. If it wasn't for the town matchmaker these two would probably have never had a chance for a happy future.
