An effective, highly recommended book.
Dr. Gary McKay and Dr. Don Dinkmeyer are practicing psychologists who have co-authored several books. How You Feel Is Up To You: The Power Of Emotional Choice is their latest offering, in which they teach readers how to gain control of their feelings. They say their book "is designed to help you gain control over your strong unpleasant emotions--guilt, anger, depression, stress, anxiety--and increase your joy and happiness. The doctors first discuss emotions, explaining how and why they're created. They then show how negative emotions can be replaced with positive feelings like joy and happiness. The trick is in learning how to change your thinking. Five basic principles are the key to changing the way you think. First you must learn to accept your feelings and yourself, then remind yourself to live in the present, rather than the past. Thirdly, you need to recognize the purpose of negative feelings. Then you need to become aware of your thoughts, and finally, develop a plan for change. Each of these principles is fully discussed, with detailed instructions and exercises for incorporating them into your life. Self-discovery exercises are sprinkled throughout the book, to help guide you through the steps. The doctors also provide real-life examples from their privatepractices. McKay and Dinkmeyer say that "choice is powerful; it sets you free." They explain that "while you may be able to do little or nothing about a change that results from external circumstances in your life, you can decide how you will respond. Your response is in your control." They offer practical help in learning how to gain control of your responses, so that you can choose your emotions. Readers who are tired of anger, depression, guilt, and all the other familiar negative emotions will find How You Feel Is Up To You an effective teacher of the skills they need for making healthier and happier choices. Practical, Powerful, and Effective
I am a marriage and family therapist and I highly recommend this book. It is the best book on managing emotions and putting the individual in control. Particularly the chapter on anger was incredibly useful and gives the skills to transform a person who feels any emotions (ie. anger, depression, anxiety, etc.) are out of balance. I have recommended this book to many of my clients and have witnessed dramatic results as a result of them using these principles. Rick A. Jass, MA

Parenting Teenagers:(STEP) Not Available Any where
I recently found this book in a Recource Center's lobby. I Started reading as I wated for my teen to finish his counseling session. I found this book to be an excellent source of helpful information. I have been searching for my own copy for a week now.

Why don't any of you " BIG" book stored cary it?????????

It really works!
I have found that Parenting Teenagers(STEP) to be one of the best books available to find practical and real solutions to parenting today's teenager. I have used the STEP model with my own son, now 19, and it helped us not only with setting boundaries but also improved our communications with each other. I have had several friends who have also used this with their teens and they like it. It's definitely a book that any parent of a teen should try to read.

Must read if you have a teenager
I was desperate. I couldn't talk to my son, he was angry, his grades were awful and we fought constantly. I knew that I had to change, but how? I knew he needed help, but I didn't know how to help him. This book help tremendously! It points out the different parenting styles, positive changes to improve your relationship and excersices to help you and your teenager. It makes sense, easy to read and to the point. Must read this book if you have a teenager.

A child-rearing handbook you can't live without
As a parent of a child diagnosed as ADHD, and even bi-polar, when all else failed, I found Parenting Teenagers to be the hand book I had searched for. Taken as a class with a weekly discussion group I finally have the tools to help my child without "Toxic Phsyciatry".

Great Canadian Talent
Winner of the Governor General's Award for poetry, and with just cause! This is the single best collection of poetry I have ever read. McKay, the avid bird watcher and lover of nature in general, clearly takes a special liking to flight and the moon. Throughout 'Another Gravity' his words seem to lift off the ground, and carries us soaring with his imagination to those very seemingly unattainable heights. A pleasure to read, and highly recommended.

Ideal for graduate students in bone health
This is the first time I have seen a book dedicated to exercise and bone. Usually bone books are about medication, biology, etc. and then they pay lipservice to exercise. The authors are to be congratulated on providing a very readable, beautifully illustrated and yet authoritative text for those of us doing Master's degrees, Honors degrees, or even PhDs in the field of bone research. I imagine that graduate students all over the US are eternally grateful for having all this information in one place. It really clears up those comples issues such as how to interpret DXA scans, why results of different exercise studies differ and the problems of stress fractures, amenorrhea etc.

It even has research suggestions for a wide variety of students - see the later chapters.

My boyfriend is a fitness leader and he loves it because it provides evidence-based exercise programs for women and men of different ages and abilities.

Well done authors - thanks from the bottom of my heart!

This book is a parenting "bible"!
This book is informative. It is concise, and easy to read. It gives many helpful examples. It also gives great deal of alternatives for difficult situations you find yourself in with your children. It has many ideas which are similar to "Children the Challenge." Another very helpful book. I started using the ideas of this book and saw immediate results in my children and myself.

Great Parenting Tools
This book is an easy to read book that can add some very helpful tools to your parenting "tool belt". I facilitate effective parenting classes and use this book as the text book.

This book is why we have a great kid!
We give this to every prospective new parent without fail because it is THE BEST. No other way to put it. Our 8 yr old is an incredible kid because she can talk to us, we can talk to her, we all understand how to comunicate and understand each other, and what to do when we don't. It has helped us through deaths, moves, toilet training, fears, "bad" friends, school, misbehaviors, social situations, etc. There is a special place in the afterlife for these authors. They have made our family a success. The dialogue will sound contrived and phony to readers at first, but please trust us when we say-IT WORKS! Now it seems as normal as can be, and is the only way I will ever interact with a child (or certain adults!)from now on!

STEP right up
This is the book used with STEP training, the 7-week parenting course. Where I live, this class is offered through the YWCA, and our school gives a modified version of STEP to all incoming parents.

Every day at our school we use the conflict-resolution model described in this book. I can think of two reasons it's so effective. First, it's very respectful of children, encouraging them to speak up and have their concerns heard. Second, the process takes so long that they soon learn to streamline it to resolve their issues without adult help. They usually come up with ways to solve problems that are okay with everyone.

We use the principles in this book at home, too.

MUST HAVE BOOK FOR ALL PARENTS
JUST FINISHED BOOK THROUGH A "STEP" COURSE. ALL 18 MEMBERS AGREE, THE BOOK IS GREAT! (WE PARTICIPATED IN A CLASS FOR 7 WEEKS (COVERED A CHAPTER A WEEK) AND IT WAS GREAT. THE SKILLS TAUGHT REALLY WORK! HANG IN THERE...IT TAKES PRACTICE BUT IT IS WORTH IT FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY..WHAT A GREAT GIFT FOR ANY NEW PARENT (THE EARLIER YOU START, THE SMOOTHER YOUR FAMILY WITH RUN)...

A 25-year-old success story !
The concepts in this book work --- our now 25-year-old daughter is proof of it. We used the 1976 edition of this book, and we are now ordering a more current version for her to use with her 3-year-old son. Our advice to parents with strong-willed children: HANG IN THERE! You will find that some techniques work better than others --- each child is a unique individual. The process is often a rocky road, but the rewards are wonderful. These children grow up to be exciting, self-motivated adults!
