Compelling scholarship with true love of Christ's message.
I have tried to read the Gospels several times, and had always come away dissatisfied, feeling that I was missing the true meaning. This book (and part two) solved that problem for me. Barclay takes anywhere from one to several verses at a time and discusses them in the contexts of the time they were written, the prevailing religious thought, and their admittedly proseletizing purpose. He demonstrates how Matthew took ideas from the Hebrew Scriptures and showed that they predicted the coming of Christ. He also tells that many of these references were inappropriate, but because Matthew was intended for the Jews, this method was used. Beyond this, though, Barclay explains the meaning of the words and deeds of Christ, making opaque parables and homilies clear and compelling. The love of Christ and his ministry to save mankind come alive in this book. Barclay elucidates the message of Christ in a powerful, heart-gripping and understandable way. I am a Jew, and recommend this book to people of any faith if they wish to understand Matthew.

very thought provoking
this book is really good...i especially enjoyed the depth of knowledge and insight. it tells you how customs and manners were relevent to that time period and why people did the things they did during that time. ive been looking for books of this nature for a long time and finally found some. it is a very good book and i will probably buy the entire series.

Thorough yet readable study on the Gospel of Matthew
This is one of the two volumes Barclay wrote on the Gospel of Matthew - each covering roughly half of this book of the Bible. These are a part of his series on the New Testament, where Barclay clearly discusses each section of each book of this portion of the Bible. Each section of the book starts with William Barclay's personal translation of the text and then goes into a discussion of the text, the times, the culture, the people, and the beliefs surrounding the text. William Barclay talks about the Bible in the context of when it was written and how it applies today. It is not surprising that the writings of this scholar hold up now as they did 30 years ago. Funny how truth stays the same year after year - it keeps going, and going...

wonderful
A wonderful Puritan jewel. This book clearly shows how easy it is to be almost a Christian. As one, like all believers, who struggles for sin, it really gives one pause. We must be committed to put away our sin and strive in God's power to be fully committed to Jesus. Discipleship is not an easy thing. The cost is very high. And our flesh pulls strongly against us. This book shows us the depths of true commitment.

Are you truly saved?
After reading Mead's work about true conversion I am convinced that this is a must read for all who truly want to examine their own faith. He causes us to look into the deepest parts of our hearts in order to examine what is the motivation for following Christ in our lives. We will be surprised at how easily many are fooling themselves in having a security when indeed they may be lost. A classic that should be read by all believers.

This is a beautiful book, with magazine style articles (they coincide with the pictures). It is a great book to have around the house for a casual fast food reference of Authurian art, and a sort of who's who in the legendary relm of King Arthur. Great for all ages.

Beautiful and Informative! :)
This entire book was filled with beautiful illustrations, and gave a terrific overall view of the Arthurian tradition, not to mention Pre-Raphaelite art!....wonderful...

A must for for goat vet
I have just about every goat medicine and management book available and this is by far the best. Smith and Pugh are decent books, but when you need a quick answer Matthews is the best. This book is inexpensive, portable, and gives treatment options not found in the other texts. I am a veterinarian and see on an average of 10-15 small ruminants per week and this book is used constantly. I found the anaesthetic protocols particularly useful as I am not fond of using Xylazine in goats. There are few pictures, but the information is easily located and you don't have to wade through alot of useless albiet interesting informatin. This book may not be as useful to goat owners as for veterinarians, because it does assume a basic veterinary education. Any vet that works on small ruminants should have a copy of this book, and if you are a goat owner you may want to consider purchasing this as a gift for your veterinarian or at least showing them this review and encouraging them to buy a copy. I cannot reccommend this book highly enough for the small ruminant practitioner.

Excellent reference book for veterinarians
"Diseases of the goat" is an excellent comprehensive reference manual for experienced goat herders and veterinarians alike. The book covers all major diseases and their treatments, and includes drug dosage recomendations. All drugs are listed with their generic and brand names. Some surgical proceedures are also discussed, and anesthetic dosages are discussed as well. This book is the first book I pull out when my veterinarian needs reference material on goats.

Changed My Life
This audio book changed my life. I have always wanted to read and study Scripture, but, like a lot of people, I could never find the time. Listening to the Gospels on CD was the answer. The sound quality is great. Michael Smith does a terrific job with the narration and the background music adds to the overall message instead of detracting from it. I would highly recommend The Gospels Come to Life to anyone interested in learning more about Jesus Christ and his teachings.

The Jacks Book & the Jacks
Excellent book with real old fashioned metal jacks! The only downside is that the jacks are stuck to the back page, and removing the box would damage the book . . . still worth it though.

Great Book On Jacks With Heavy Weight Metal Jacks & Ball
This book contained many variations from around the world of the game of Jacks. It's everything you ever wanted to know about Jacks. It even contains instructions for making your own, though with the excellent set of heavy weight metal (deluxe) jacks and ball that they include you won't need to. They even include a cloth bag to store it all in. Relive your childhood and refresh your memories with this book or better yet pass it on to a new generation. The only negative is that there aren't many illustrations in this book so younger children may need help in reading and following the instructions, but older children won't have any problems following the well written instructions.

A book of divine life...
I've read the Chinese edition of Life-Study.
The church has been on the earth for almost twenty centuries. During such an extended period of time, many saints have authored studies on various books of the New Testament, and numerous commentaries and expositions have been written. However, most of them touch only the objective and doctrinal side of the divine revelation and have failed to stress the side of life. The purpose of this Life-study as expressed by Witness Lee is to present the truths contained in the New Testament, to minister the life supply, to solve the common and hard problems found in the New Testament, and to open up every book of the New Testament by giving a thorough interpretation of it.

student
I read this set of life study books. they are excellent to read because they explain these new testatment books in an organic livin way. It makes you enjoy the bible. it makes me appreciate The gospels in a deeper way. After reading these life study books I realize how wise it is. How God likes to hide. These Life Study Books unlock the bible. You have to read one to see for your self. Its kind of like trying to enjoy the coconut milk without knowing how to open the coconut. These books open up the bible so you can enjoy God who is in the word as life.

Matthew 1-7
Published in Hardcover by Moody Publishers (1985)
Author: John MacArthur
Amazon base price: $21.99
Average review score:

Conservative: Thorough, Scholarly, Yet Easily Understood
Good solid hermeneutics and clear presentation make this an ideal volume for the pastor, student, or serious layperson. MacArthur is not only an excellent Bible teacher, but he writes simply for popular use, yet nothing is water-down. This is a most thorough work, useful in preparing sermons, lessons, or personal growth. MacArthur interprets from a moderate dispensational viewpoint and seems to follow obejctive principle of interpretation. He brings in a generous amount of cultural and background information, as well as other Bible texts. I suggest you purchase the entire Matthew set. There is probably none finer.

Superb and Inspired!
John MacArthur continues to educate and enlighten Christians in his New Testament Commentary series. In this commentary, Dr. MacArthur gives a detailed and thorough exposition of the first seven chapters of the book of Matthew including an in-depth analysis of the beloved Sermon on the Mount. Each chapter begins with several verses taken from the book of Matthew and is followed by a lengthy and thought provoking literal interpretation. If you are looking for an educated and spiritually blessed exposition, this commentary series is for you.

Simply speaking, it's BIBLICAL!
In this day and age, Christians must decern what is right and what is wrong because there are so called "pastors" in Christian churches who mis-interpret the word of God. "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." (1 John 4:12). To learn the true doctrine of God's word, I strongly recommend the John MacArthur Commentary series. I was very thankful for my understanding of the bible through this commentary. But always keep in mind that it is the Holy Spirit who leads you into understanding of his word, so seek him sincerely in humility. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." (Matthew 5:6)

A remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets
The Franconia, New Hampshire, farm of the American poet Robert Frost was turned into a museum and center for poetry and the arts in 1976. From that time, "The Frost Place" has been annual event wherein an emerging poet has been invited to spend the summer living in the house where Frost once lived and wrote some of his greatest poetry. The Breath Of Parted Lips: Voices From The Robert Frost Place, Volume One is a remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets, each of whom won that honor of a summer's residency and document the success of the original concept as a means of generating outstanding poetry while nurturing the poet's muse in the rooms and views that were once the inspiration of the great Robert Frost. Poem At 40: Windwashed--as if standing next to the highway,/a truck long as the century sweeping by,/all things at last bent in the same direction./An opening, as if all/the clothes my ancestors ever wore/dry on lines in my body:/wind-whipped, parallel with the ground,/some sleeves sharing a single clothespin/so that they seem to clasp hands,/seem to hold on.//And now that I can see/up the old women's dresses,/there's nothing but a filtered light./And now that their men's smoky breath/has traversed the earth,/it has nothing to do with them./And now that awkward, fat tears of rain/slap the window screen,/now that I'm naked too,/cupping my genitals, tracing with a pencil/the blue vein between my collar bone and breast,/I'll go to sleep when I'm told.
