I recommend this book to anyone. Even though it is listed under “young adult”, anyone interested in historical fiction will enjoy it, and it can also be read aloud to younger children.

Even though the book is primarily about 16 year old Katy, the other characters in the book have detailed personalities that make you care about what happens to them, too. The details that are included of this time period also add interest to the story. You don’t typically think of what people ate, the clothes they wore, and the way families interacted in other historical time periods. There’s a lot of emotion throughout the book which includes tragedy and hardships, but Katy hopes and works toward a better future. It all makes for a realistic and exciting story.

I read this book a long time ago, but where others fade,this remains in my memory. It is a most unusual tale of the triumph of the human spirit. The main character suffers a disfiguring injury which has a profound effect on his life. The steps he takes to re-enter the world are nothing short of amazing. Read it. You won't forget it.

Frieze takes us into the mind of the Buddhist from India who designed and built the famous temple at Borubudur. This means the setting is circa 700 A.D., but the book doesn't read like a historical novel. Instead, it's a poetic attempt to recreate the designer's mind and aesthetics by looking at the great monument he left behind. One feels privileged to discover the workings of a great artistic mind, and it's done in tight, elegant, and lyrical language. It's got certain qualities that make me compare it, for style, lyricism, and great feeling, with Martín Cruz Smith's Stallion Gate. It's not an easy read,and it's not for everybody, but it's one book I wish I had written.

William F. Wu, the poet's son and a novelist and short story writer. Before expressing my opinions, I should make my bias clear; as the poet's eldest son, I can't possibly read her poetry impartially. Yet I find it fascinating to see how strength and subtlety interweave in her work to describe not only parts of life I shared but also her experiences that are independent of me. Some of my mother's poetry recalls her awareness of having mixed Chinese and British descent; I was raised with only a sense of pride in our heritages, and with no expectation of meeting prejudice on my own. In other poems, she writes about everyday life, and I often recognize the way she uses real details to bring out her larger point. I see the flowering crabtree down by the driveway; the stainless steel flatware still used in the house; the cat I raised from a kitten, who lived to be fourteen years old; a Chiefs football game our family attended with our season tickets, all used to create poetry about concepts far greater than the mundane. With a little embarrassment, I find poems about myself -- and my brother, Chris -- describing us, of course, from her internal point of view, one not expressed as a mother directly when we were young. Because all her poems build to a larger abstract issue, we are both central to the works and at the same time stepping stones to a universal concept. I find it an odd but amusing role to play. From Ink and Sandalwood contains poetry that is unique by any measure.

"Just Like You and Me," by David Miller, has a simple theme: animals and humans have a lot in common when you think about it. The author briefly looks at several species (cheetahs, penguins, chameleons, etc.) and for each shows a characteristic that it has in common with humans. Example: both lions and people like to lounge around!

The book is illustrated with photographs of paper sculptures. This artwork is truly remarkable: rich in visual texture and color. This is truly a visually striking book.

This is an art anthology which traces the history of male love in Western civilization. It has many superb reproductions of works which are difficult to find, and the text frequently reproduces highly interesting written materials which are also difficult to find. It is indispensable, and a classic.

It's set in Peru and Bolivia and maybe Brazil, and is full of erudite literary references and wonderful descriptions of old Lima. At first I thought it was real magic realism but then I thought it was a satire of the genre. The heroine is a sort of sexy female Candide. I was just rereading it and checked Amazon.com for more Cecile Pineda but find everything out of print. The only other review is of a novel called Frieze set in the ancient Orient.
