Its about time!
Your local bookseller will have entire sections of books all about heterosexual relationships-- how come it took so long to get a true gay and lesbian relationship book that was this good? The good thing about this book, however, has to do with its sub-title: "Creating the Stories of Our Lives." Whereas other books of its genre seem to rest only on their author's self-proclaimed expertise, Martinac uses the book as a sort of collage. She explores relationships though all sorts of interviews and personal stories written by herself and other gay and lesbian people. This book doesn't tell you how your relationship should function, rather it tells how other relationships have, and thus you can relate your life to those in the book. I would definitely reccomend it-- Very inspiring!

Wonderful Work!!
Paula Martinac and Roberta Achtenberg have done the gay and lesbian community a great service in creating this warm and complete look at the current state of lesbian and gay relationships.

I highly recommend it.

Out of Time, by Paula Martinac
The delicious feeling that women loved each other in another time is the reward of reading this book. It's a thrill, so different from most ghost stories to read a good writer whose intrepid imagination doesn't shy away from asking "What was a kiss like in the 20's?" then startling us some time later with the answer pressed sensuously against her lips.
It reads easily and inevitably, even in its most unlikely plot turns, because the narrator has been found by spirits who kept their secrets while living, but are ready, as the world finally is, for them to be exposed.
A very fun read. I recommend it.

The past comes alive
I was glad to see this book back in print, because it is delightfully written and cunningly put together. As Susan learns more about the past, she loses touch with the present. I think that has happened to everyone who has ever fallen in love with a picture or a story and wished they somehow knew how it all came out in the end. My only quibble is the unrealistic ending, but that was a small part of an otherwise inspired, unique novel.

couldn't put the book down -- what a great read!!
a friend told me about this book just this morning and the premise alone got me outside long enough to pick it up and spend the day reading. It reads so true-to-life, especially for those who have been haunted by other's pasts and sensitive enough hear them. Someone should consider making this novel a movie -- each scene is vivid and compelling -- thank you Paula Martinac

mindless irritation
this novel irritated me. it seemed like a lame attempt to publish lesbian literature - as if the fact that she was gay waas enough. the main character was simply boring. she was one-dimensional and her lame quest to fulfill the whole left by her long-term lover was just, well, lame. i wouldn't waste your money on this one.

Quick getaway, like a weekend in Vegas...
This was a fun read. Entertaining, humorous, and a definate dose of drama for those like myself whose homo-love lives are teetering on the edge of mundane. It is a book with sand tucked away in between the creases of each page, and wrinkles and dog-eared pages left by all of those friends who have been hovering over the same copy for the past couple weeks. I recommend you get a couple of friends to pitch in a buck or two and make the book do laps. Hey, it's cheaper than going to the latest meant-for-twenty-somethings movie and you'll get the same satisfaction. Enjoy!

Rita Mae, step aside!
I don't know how I missed this book the first time around. Chicken is witty, sexy, real and fun. It reminded me strongly of the Rita Mae Brown I once loved -- quirky characters and excellent writing.

It looks at lesbian life in a different way than the romance novels do, which provides for a rich story with a lot of breadth. Fortunately, even though I don't consider this book a romance per se, it's got plenty of the good stuff.

I am so glad this book was brought back into print. It's a slice of lesbian life and a delightful novel.
