Everybody Needs To Know About William J. Seymour
From Glenn Gohr -- Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center
Having read through this manuscript when in its formative stages, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is researching the Pentecostal Movement or the Azusa Street Revival of Los Angeles that began in the spring of 1906. It is also a good sourcebook for those interested in Black History as William Seymour figures prominently among African-Americans of the 20th Century. Larry Martin has done an excellent job in ferreting out little known facts about William J. Seymour, the leader of the Azusa Street Revival. He has also uncovered information regarding Seymour's family and his early life in Louisiana and other places he traveled before arriving in Los Angeles in 1906. Some of the background information he gives regarding everyday life in Southern Louisiana and in Los Angeles near the turn of the century are essential to the understanding of William J. Seymour and the role he played in the Black Community and in the beginnings of the Pentecostal movement. Having contacted a number of different religious and local archives, looking through old newspapers, census records, city directories, and the like, Dr. Martin has a clear understanding of who William J. Seymour was. This is the most complete biography of William J. Seymour which has been written to date. When combined with his reflections and documentation of the famed Azusa Street Revival, this makes an excellent backdrop for understanding the Pentecostal movement and current revivalism around the globe.

A Prophetic Marvel
Matin's tale of a broadcast giant trying to influence politics via a in-home cable response system, is as entertaining as it is relevant with todays internet capabilities. A fast enjoyable read with enough adventure, crime, and science to thrill non-stop. WARNING: Book does not come with bulletproof vest. (The only way to put this book down is at gunpoint, and you may opt for the bullet.)
Things are always more (or less) than they appear
While chronologically Martin's second novel, it is a clear departure from his now more familiar style of historical narration first used in Back Bay and then in his last three novels. Martin demonstrates his story telling ability without relying on history as a frame work. I was hooked from the first chapter and plowed through the near 500 page book in less than two days. Martin displays an uncanny abilty to lead the reader in one direction then turning the plot quickly almost 180 degrees while maintaining the integrity of the story. More than once I was totally surprised. It made for a most enjoyable read.
For fans of Martin's more contemporary works this is an enjoyable change of pace, yet shows all the craftmanship in storytelling we have come to expect from Martin.
While the best known works of Martin are historical, this book may accurately be classified as premonition. Published in 1984, Martin accurately predicts what has become a core problem in American society. If for no other reason the book should be read for this, but it is a great story.

the shoulder man
I have the extreme pleasure of working with Marty Kelley P.T OCS. He is one of the most renownwed experts in the shoulder. He has written many articles and chapters on shoulder rehab. Marty is also the musculoskelatel team leader at The University of Pennsylvania Health System. His knowledg of orthopedics is vast and un-ending. His book describes the shoulder in vast detail and also breaks down the specific injuries and diagnosis into easy to understand format. Also the sections on rehab are informative and also cutting edge. I can speak from first hand experience Marty knows what he is talking about. This is an excellent refference book for shoulder rehab. If you want to know about how to rehab the shoulder you need not look any further than his book.

LIfe Changer
Several weeks after my mother passed away, my husband was off fishing and I was attempting to come to terms with becoming the matriarch of my family...a difficult task! I wandered into a small bookstore in Weaverville, CA and this book jumped out at me. It brought me a sense of the peace and a meaningful goal, achieving "sagehood" or is it "sagedom." I read a selection or two each night. I am still a long way from reaching my goal, but the challenge makes me feel alive. I recommend it to all "of a certain age."
not a how to book
read no further!! Warning!! danger ahead. If you have come this far and still want a Christmas present for that old person you know, you better know what you are doing. Don't waste your money unless this person is open, friendly, lively, alert, happy, honest, intouch with themselfs and is full of joyfull life. If they fit all the above and more, then search their bookshelfs and their bedside table because they probably already have this. This is a wonderful book! Reading the first page I found this great quote "The great task of the sage is learning to see in the darkness and not be afraid" and this " Enjoy the monents given you. Love the people around you. Live the life offered you." Need I say more. Now, If your like me, old and full of life, I keep my copy close to my reading glasses.

a true, unknown classic
I came across this book in the 'magic' section of a Tower Books store... (I mention this misplacement to let you know this book is hard to find even when it's in print.) The author devotes the first two or three slim chapters (all the chapters of this book are short but effectively enlightening) to Shakespeare's 'secret' (the structure of his plays as well as practical aspects of his religious art - call it 'alchemy,' but don't let that word turn you away, it's not a book on alchemy in the usual sense that word is used...) Then he devotes the next twelve chapters to twelve of Shakespeare's greatest plays (as well as the most mysterious plays) giving the reader very impressive, revelatory insights as to what these plays are about and what some of the various characters symbolize (for instance how some of the beautiful and charming female characters in the late 'romances' - Cymbeline, Winter's Tale... - represent the Heavenly Realm, etc...) and the general 'undercurrent' of themes that are meant to carry a viewer or reader through a universal drama of darkness to light... Suffice it to say this is not usual academic fare, but it is original and impressive and enlightening and it has the added grace of being concise...
Alchemy of the Symbol & Structure of the Plays
Academics will wince. Many will throw the book down in anger. A few may even write angry letters to the publisher demanding that the book be recalled. After all the work they've done convincing the public that Shakespeare was a Marxist, feminist, proto-Nazi, homosexual, anti- smoker, imperialist here appears (or reappears) a little book suggesting that Shakespeare was just simply an inspired artist creating inspired art suggesting that there's something higher than the fully-accredited human being. This book is a to-the-point revelation of Shakespeare's Work's; justifiably forgettable when you go back to the plays themselves (as all books on Shakespeare should be forgotten when you go back to the plays themselves) but a revelation none-the-less. By itself it's worth all the books on Shakespeare in the New York Public Library; and it's a good aquisition for those interested in the esoteric side of life (what's NOT contained in Horatio's philosophy...).

VBM for Starters
Martin's book is an excellent introduction to the practice of Value Based Management. Although it is far from being an MBA type book, it explains the basics and shows some good examples. Maybe the strongest point of the book is the comparison of several approaches used by the biggest consulting companies sponsoring VBM: Stern Stewart's EVA versus BCG's and McKinsey's measures. When you're ready to climb another step, the best choice is Young and O'Byrne's "EVA and Value Based Management". It goes deep in details of implementation of EVA based systems, is comprehensive and technically advanced and also give pros and cons of the measure.
T-H-E Value Based Management Guide
This book, along with Young and O'Byrne's "EVA and Value-Based Management," are perhaps the only two books you really need to develop a comprehensive understanding of shareholder value and value based mangement. In fact, the book is almost equivalent to completing MBA-level coursework in both corporate finance and competitive strategy (relax, the book is far more exciting). If you've been thinking of implementing -- or have already implemented -- a value based management program, you should add this book to your library... soon.

intriguing and beautifully written
Like the other reviewer here, I was assigned this book in my junior year of high school by a well-meaning teacher who was so frustrated by his students' lack of interest (or comprehension) of Free Fall that he simply gave up. Three years later I picked my copy off the shelf and gave it a second try. Although there are still times when I have to blink and reread a paragraph several times to absorb the frenetic stream-of-consciousness style of narration, I am constantly in awe of Golding's exquisite writing. To all brave readers, give this one a chance.
No wonder he won a Nobel
I heard about 'Freefall' from my old English taecher, a man called Mr. Breen. You could never have said that we got on very well, probably as a result of his compulsive, patronising behaviour and my downright laziness and inability to accept authority. Anyway he was a man who liked to tell stories, and one of his favourites related to a curious book by the name of freefall. It was two years later and I was about to come and live in Paris when I saw the book in question in the token airport lobby bookstore . I bought it, and then read it. It is hard to explain the feeling that you get when you are so intimately touched by a piece of literature that you become almost posessive about it and protective when you find out that someone else has obtained the same sense of enjoyment out of it as yourself. That is why I greet the fact that I am the only one to have reviewed this book with a mixture of elation and sorrow. The story revolves around the analysis of the narrator's life (Sammy Mountjoy), and tries to ascertain where it was that he lost the ability to manipulate his own fate - where he lost his freedom. We are presented with various episodes from his life as he tries to find out 'where it happened'. The obscurity of his period in the concentration camp is somewhat baffling, but the rest of the novel is written so beautifully and with such convoluted yet clear language that it is a joy to read. This novel is far too good to miss, but remember, I got there first.

Dogs, Drawings and so much more
After using this book for slide researching in an art gallery, I bought it online and am very happy with it. It has excellent quality photographs of Wegman's dogs and his fashion pictures that revolve around Fay Ray and Man Ray and has a well-written prologue and interview with Wegman. However, I think the book is far more interesting because of Wegaman's other art interests including hilarious film stills, photographs of objects, comic line drawings, and full-page images of his collage-like oil paintings. They help to complete a picture of not just a funny artist, but of an artist who can use multiple media to represent his ideas in a fresh, funny, and uniquely beautiful way. I'd recommend this book to anyone who knows of William Wegman and wants to know more about this very talented man.
william wegman is talent!
I do not own this book, but soon shall. I recently saw some of Wegman's work at the Birmingham Museum of Art and it was pure talent. I think that this exhibit drew more attention than the mummy and egyptian exhibit. His work is wonderful and I loved it. I give 5 stars to Wegman. Any true lover of Photography and/or Animals should see his work. It's great.

Great Sermons of Azusa Street
This book which contains sermons preached by the late Bishop William J. Seymour should be read by every Christian, Saved, Sanctified and/or religious person. Bishop Seymour takes us back to the old time way, that the bible speaks about, " Ask for the old path ". What Bishop Seymour is preaching about is not just a beleif, but it is a way of Life according to the bible. He speaks of The Baptism of the Holy Ghost and how to recieve it, first getting rid of sin, then by tarring on the altar, seeking to be filled, not someone teaching you how to speak in tongues. I even appreciate that fact that he expounds on the fact that not everyone speaks in tongues, that it is a gift to some not all. The Bishop also preaches about being the husband of one wife and the wife having one husband. Many find this controversial in this day, but it is written in the bible, and Bishop Seymour breaks it down scripture by scripture so, that there would be no mistake about what God has ordained.
This book is a must for those who want the true word of God, not false doctrines. If you want to know Christ and his ways of righteousness, I highly recommend this book.
Simple Truths / Amazing Impact
Here are some of the actual sermons preached by Bishop William Seymour at the Azusa Street Revival in 1906. This revival introduced pentecostalism to the world and changed the religious landscape forever. Read for yourself the simple truths that changed the world.

Exceptionally good for beginners
I wanted to find a worthwhile text to supplement the Access
2.0 introductory courses I developed. For beginners, this is
the best of the bunch.
Many introductory database books immediately dive into the
specific program they are about. I think this is a disservice
to the beginning reader. There are a few things which
everyone needs to know about relational database design
before even thinking about using such a program.
One of the best things about this book is its initial chapter on
the essentials of database analysis. It doesn't get into so
much detail as to scare people away, but it successfully
emphasizes the benefits of developing a plan before building
an application. With this book as a start, the reader is less
likely to develop the bad habit of "shooting from the hip".
The remaining chapters cover tables, queries, forms, reports,
and macros. The book includes useful exercises to develop
the rudimentary skills that anyone needs to know in order to
work with Microsoft Access.
In fact, the exercises are unified in that they all revolve
around a common theme: developing an application for a
bookseller to track customers and inventory. It's a good
example, since many aspects of the sample application
can be used elsewhere.
There is one major topic this book doesn't address, and that's
how to write Access Basic code. But then, coding isn't a
suitable topic for an introductory text, is it? If you're at that
stage in your Access career, you need to look elsewhere for
guidance.
For absolute beginners, though, this is the only book I
recommend.

What were Seymour's secrets. Humility, passion, holiness, love for people across racial lines.
Larry Martin begins with Seymour's birth and childhood and vividly protrays his treatment as a black person. Yet Seymour rose beyond racial cruelty and hate--and embraced and spread the unconditional love of God. See for yourself. You've got to read this book.
