FCP User
Chawla's book gives an excellent overview of digital and analog video and lists the necessities for optimizing your Macintosh and FCP in a quick and easy language and, more importantly, explains the whys of how things work. I also found the index referencing to be in good working order with easy to find listings. And the book goes over filter effects (left untouched by previous publishers) as well as the basics of importing/exporting alternative media and sound as well as how to incorporate them into your video editing.

Required Reading
I am a digital video producer by trade and this booked proved to me that I really don't know as much as I thought I did. It is simple to understand, but incredibly useful and informative. It will always be kept close to my editing station as an invaluable reference. It has already saved me from a making a couple of mistakes, that I had been making for years. YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

Like Ragu...it's in there!
Bravo, Bob! I read this book from cover to cover and didn't do anything else until I finished. Not only is this book written with honest advice for the practical consumer, but it also reviews all the various peripheral options, storage media, upgrade options, networking, and anything else you can possibly do to your Mac. Includes very practical advice on how to maximize your Mac's speed and performance in an efficient way. All the features of the Mac are explained for the functional user. My favorite part--at the end of the book, there is a whole reference section of web sites for shareware, freeware, tech support, buying online, hunting for graphics and fonts, gaming, etc. The sites are, according to the writers, the best on the web. When I visited some of these tech support sites, I appreciated this book even more--many of the site developers who were providing support online have terminated their services because they weren't getting the financial support they needed and they were devoting all their energy into helping other Mac users. This book is a wonderful reference; even advanced users will pick up some tips. Keep in mind that if you need some troubleshooting advice for a serious hardware problem, you're likely not to be able to get online at all where you can usually find the advice for free--that is if you can find someone kind enough to help. Buy this book, and keep it handy--"it may save your Mac's life one day."

Five stars for a five stars writing crew
I am glad there are but a few books this good: There is a definite danger more would put me out of the tech support business!

As the editor of MacHome Journal's free eZine, HotTips Weekly, I probably read more books about the Mac than most users.

It is a great credit to this work that it has become the ONE book stitting on my desk, ready for action. I consult it not only for what I do not know, but also to validate what I think I know.

It is clear, concise and well organized. When time comes to explain complex issues or find an elegant solution, it becomes the best friend you could ever have!

Good concise overview of QuickTime and MoviePlayer Pro 3
If you use QuickTime 3, or have it installed on your Macintosh or Windows computer, you'll find that this is an excellent reference for how to get the most out of QuickTime and MoviePlayer 3 Pro. The authors get right to the heart of the matter, covering all of the core QuickTime technology including extensive descriptions of MoviePlayer Pro track features, text, images, sound, 3-D, sprites, QuickTime VR, MIDI, HTML tags, and more. It's an excellent reference, and full of useful QuickTime 3 feature information which is hard to find in online documentation. It's easily worth the under $20 price just to have QuickTime and MoviePlayer Pro 3 documentation in print form. If you have MoviePlayer Pro 3 sitting idly on your machine you'll be inspired to start it up and investigate examples from the book.

Wonderful Synopsis of QuickTime Pro 3
The only guide to MoviePlayer lets readers quickly and easily harness the full power of digital editing. QuickTime 3.0 is Apple Computer's industry-leading digital sound and audio format, both on the Internet and elsewhere. This title is keyed toward Internet developers, multimedia developers, and digital audio and video enthusiasts and hobbyists.

Looking forward to their next book!

I love this book
If you're a QT user, don't forget to buy this book. This book is packed with useful hints and tricks. It's surely going to be useful to you someday.

Remember to buy some other books about general video compression theories, MPEG encoding, color theories ... so you'll handle codecs better. This book is not the whole thing.

Step-by-step instruction to powerful media!
As webmaster to a site with over 100 quicktime VR panoramas & QuickTime digital media - this book was a MUST HAVE! It gave me all the information I needed to go beneath the surface and unlock the powerful features that QuickTime has to offer. If you want to create & deliver cutting edge media with all the bells and whistles. . . . BUY THIS BOOK! Luke - webmaster virtual bakersfield.com

correction
Step one of the section "Creating Video Tracks from A Sequence of Still Images" states: "give each still-image file a common name with a sequential number appended to it (for example, picture1, picture2, picture3). Then place all of the files in the same folder." This is a great book for QTPro beginners, explains everything very clearly. I believe the poor review was due to lack of concentration not error on the part of the writers.

Karel the Robot

Authors: Jim Roberts, Richard P. Pattis, and Mark Stehlik
Amazon base price: $35.50
Used price: $34.88
Average review score:

It's Okay
Its concepts are amazing to any programmer but, widely known, I learned just as much from my Instructor in my post-secondary class then I did in this book. The Karel code also gets a little boring. However, to be a good programmer you need to know these concepts through and through, so I do find it useful as an introduction to programming. I don't recommend it to anyone who knows their own logical style well already; it will be useless to you.

Book is quite good, Software does not run.
The presentation of the concepts of programming and the building of layers of complexity was handled in a competent and easily read manner. However, the software simulator is completely out of date and does not run under windows 98. For beginning programming students with little or no other computer experience, this would be a good starting point...IF the software worked.

Richard Pattis is a genius!
This book is very well written and I highly recommend it. It is interesting to read, and very comprehensive. Richard Pattis is my 15-127 professor. (I hope I get an A on the Mastery! ) Thanks.

Introduction to ABAP/4 Programming for SAP, Revised and Expanded Edition
Published in Hardcover by Premier Press (1998)
Authors: Gareth M. De Bruyn and Robert Lyfareff
Amazon base price: $50.00
Used price: $99.99
Average review score:

Patchy and poorly structured
There are lots of good things about this book, but it is very patchy, not particularly well executed, and full of mistakes, omissions and misprints. The main use for this book would be for someone to read prior to attending an ABAP course - in particular BC400. Reading this book beforehand would certainly give a headstart in some of the concepts. However, this is a book for someone who already has some wide experience in programming and is definately not for the novice programmer. There are plenty of weak areas: security is not mentioned, despite being fundamental to ABAP, dialog programming is ignored, internal table coverage is sketchy. Parts of the workbench such as the organizer are not covered. Many of the examples are trivial and easy to understand. These offer the most comprehensive explanations, whilst other more complex areas are skimmed over with a useless explanation. Many, many, typographical errors exist. Some of the figures are missing or appear in the wrong place. A lot of the formatting of examples is wrong. Having said all that, if you need to try to grasp the general features of ABAP before going on a formal course, the book is quite useful. If you were hoping to learn ABAP from this book, forget it.

The BEST and MOST PRACTICAL ABAP/4 book I've come across.
I am currently involved with an installation project of SAP in several countries and I have had the dubious pleasure of getting exposed to the ABAP code. If you are involved with an SAP project you know the software will contain some bugs and you will also want some customization. Unfortunately, most of the programmers out there do not know your business and at times it is frustrating bridging the gap to meet the customization needs.

So the more of the programming language that you know the easier the communication will be. For example, the programmer will give you a program and if it does not meet your needs it is very helpful in being able to read through the program logic and understand what the program is doing. This book does an excellent job in explaining the commands, the syntax, giving practical examples, and highly stresses the practical rules for optimizing the program.

If you have the ability to write your own programs and play around in a development system this book is the one with which to start. It will give you the basics and beyond and is very easy to read and follow, especially with the examples.

Again, I highly recommend this book from a practical reference and also as a text book to learn how to program in SAP.

Excellent reference
I have attended SAP's partner academy for ABAP training and read Kretschmer & Weiss' book 'Developing SAP Applications'. Based on my experience, I would highly recommend this book as an educational supplement. It has many realistic examples and is easy to read. Difficult concepts and valuable performance related tips are clearly presented in a format that ABAP developers will find useful. In particular it provides excellent information on data extracts and batch data communication that Kretschmer and Weiss do not cover in their text

ALE, EDI & IDoc Technologies for SAP

Very comprehensive, practical and concept-explaining book
The concepts are very well explained and this would help anyone build their knowledge and expertise in this area. Most of this information is not avaliable in SAP help. Tips and advice from the author compensated for my lack of years of experience in this area. The IDocs section is very impressive as the author draws a comparison between the traditional methos of exchanging data using files vs IDocs. No fluff, this book has solid information. All in all, a great book for anyone in the ALE, EDI area.

I've read both the Arvind Nagpal and Rajeev Kasturi books
I've read both the Arvind Nagpal and Rajeev Kasturi books, and I conclude that the Nagpal book is much better for me, a person who has been doing SAP EDI for several years.

I do not know either of these authors. I do not have anything to do with the publishers. I bet this is more than many of the reviewers here can say!

I know that sheer bulk is not what we are buying here, but let's do some numbers to examine one aspect of the comparison. The Kasturi book starts with 388 pages. Well over 100 pages in the back are tables out of SAP that we can print any time we want (or save a tree and just pull up a screen). Since I've worked with SAP EDI for a few years, I didn't expect a lot of things to be new to me in the first 3 or 4 chapters, but man, there was nothing even moderatly interesting to me in the early part of the book. That left about 150 pages in the middle that, I'll admit, I only skimmed. But the per-page cost of those few possibly valuable pages is quite high! There was a strong ALE / example flavor to the book. As if someone wrote about a few of their favorite implementations.

Now, the Nagpal book starts with quite a few more pages (786). There is NOT a huge section of this book dedicated to stuff I could print out of or look up in SAP. Yes, some of this stuff is 'light' too. And again, I'll admit to skimming a lot of it that I didn't have a pressing need to know right now. And yes, there are quite a few print-screens in the book (but I LIKE print-screens). The bottom line is that I, a person who's been using SAP-EDI quite a while, found the Nagpal title MORE INTERESTING, INFORMATIVE, and found it had MORE INFORMATION than the Kasturi book.

--Dale--

A great book, well organized and full of useful information!
Thank you for an excellent book! I think it would be safe to say that this book has saved my company more than $30K in consulting costs already. I expect the savings to increase because his recommendations will allow us to implement a system with the proper controls in place to avoid costly errors. I have found Mr. Nagpal's book an invaluable reference to assist me in connecting our SAP 4.0B system to our major Canadian retailer customers.

I think SAP or the EAI vendors should give this book out with every licence! It's like a patient (and affordable!) SAP EDI consultant walking you through every step of the way.

I own both books and this one is by far the most useful. We did a customer master file load using ALE techniques and some program names were covered in the other book but Mr. Nagpal's book is the one I refer to daily.

If you have to do EDI with SAP then don't hesitate to buy this book.

Excellent
I bought a new computer and a new Office:mac 2001 and didn't know where to go from there! Then I purchased a copy of Microsoft Office:mac2001"Running." I started with Chapter 2 and am up to Chapter 25. I do a little learning every day. It's like I have my own classroom. Even for such a novice as me, the explanations are very clear, and some day I expect to be able to publish my own cookbook. All the Formatting Tools, the Address Book, E-Mail, how to costomize your work, Tables, columns, and graphics. It's all so clear and such fun to learn! In other words, I like this book.

A good guide to office 2001
This is a very well presented guide to using the new Office suite. It contains very useful tips that even experienced users of earlier versions will find useful. I made severeal beneficial changes to my preferences as a result. It is a very well illustrated book that can be used as a reference guide as well as being read. The authors provide contact information so that more esoteric problems can be addressed. I have just used it to learn how to create hyperlinks and how to use sounds from other email clients in the Entourage email suite. I recommend this large paperbook as a good starting point for learning more about the capabilities of the software.

Helping the Mac get along with Windows
This book is a definite must for someone who has never dreamed of using PC applications. Why would you if you own an iMac and its software can/will do what most Windows apps. will accomplish? If upgrading from Office 98 then this is a mere dress up to some already great applications. Entourage is the best email client and the other system apps. are superior for accomplishing any task as it relates to work OR fun! Highly recommend this book to enhance a great product to its fullest.
