The best handbook
The book is crisply written, and gives some remarkably clear insights and advice on reengineering. It also provides some useful, applicable tools (process maps, LP diagrams) to make an effort more effective. Advice includes service quality design, organizing a reengineering effort, and implementation. All is invaluable.

I stongly recommend this book.

Still waiting for your next book
Where's the great editorals from some leading authors and experts in the field ? Just started to re-read. Great stuff for those spearheading a re-engineering project. Still awaiting your next text/book from the trio of Kelvin, Rich and John.

The Definitive Guide to Performance Management
In this age of activity-based costing and balanced scorecards, there are lots of so-called pioneers. Lynch and Cross are true pioneers. They invented the term balanced scorecard, long before Nolan and Norton. As a process consultant, I use the principles in the book on a daily basis. The representation of the performance pyramid is very intuitive. People unfamilar with performance management concepts can very quickly grasp the interrelationships between strategic, tactical and operational measures. If your budget allows you only one book on performance management -- make this book the one.

Excellent
Focuses on developing corporate performance measures, specifically a balanced scorecard. Used it extensively while writing my thesis. Readable and usable, a rare combination.

Hallmark Doesn't Live Here Anymore
If your idea of love is limited to visions of puppies and balloons, The Thing About Love Is... probably not for you. In Polyphony Press' first effort, the heavy topic of love is tackled in gritty, gutsy pieces that cut to core of this complex emotion. Sometimes it's bliss, sometimes it's bizarre, and quite often it hurts, but regardless of its form, love is always intriguing. This anthology is in keeping with that notion. With a variety of styles and voices, the works featured here are unanimous in their ability to draw the reader in and keep him hooked. It is truly a great read that may challenge one's personal definition of love. Call it an enjoyable experiment in mind expansion!

Armed for Battle
It's difficult to find an anthology that has as much stopping power as this one. Reading it, I was impressed not only by the diversity of the authorial voices, but also by their veracity. Each story, poem and play seems to have come straight from the gut. What's more, the contributing writers help to remove our blinders; particularly when it comes to matters of the heart. Love, they argue, is nothing less than a battlefield on which each of us daily chances victory or defeat. Those seeking to enter the contest fully armed would do well to buy this book.

A Good Book To Curl Up With
Anthologies are not my usual choice of reading material, but as this was recommended to me, I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. While I could not relate to some of the pieces here, I enjoyed the underlying topic immensely. The poetry, drama, and short stories were a good blend. The Thing About Love Is... an enjoyable and fast read, but has a peculiar lingering effect that required that I return to it for further exploration. It's a perfect book to read from the relative comfort and safety of your best chair, where you know that you can dip into the joy and angst of love and for once, walk away unscathed.

Boring, boring, boring.
If you want to fall asleep, this is the book. Lifeless explanations, unclear steps in exercises, akward download process for getting images from the web. Some of them not downloadable, and some have missing layers when they are supposed to have them for the exercise. I like to read Photoshop books, even though they are technical, i like to consult them quickly, but also read them like a book, but this one...i can't get over 2 or 3 pages!! The book is thorough, but i think the process of consulting it should be more atractive and stimulating, with eyecatching titles, headers, arrows, etc.
I have become a big fan of Deke McClelland. I recommend buying his books if you want to enjoy what you read.

Buy this one!!!!!!
WOW! This is an amazing book! I love doing stuff with computers I'm still in highschool and I like buying books that I can go through to learn things. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or an expert at photoshop this is a great book to buy. It is long but when you look at it its well organized so you can either go through it chapter by chapter as a tutorial or just go to the table of contents and flip to the page that you need. After each chapter it has instructions to do an excercise that requires use of all the topics covered in the chapter!! It is amazing. Lynch even made a website where you can download workbook files and even e-mail the author. If you buy only one photoshop book make it this one.

Very good
I admit to being a Photoshop book junkie (well, book junkie in general!) For some reason I resisted buying this book for a while, but one day, on impulse, I did. I am very glad I did. I have not finished it yet, but so far, I am impressed. The writing is in a clear style that is easy to understand, and it covers other important aspects to Photoshop (and digital imaging-related topics) that I haven't seen in my other Photoshop books. It has ample images and screenshots, all in the appropriate places, which makes learning and understanding easier. Also, there is a "troubleshooting" feature scattered throughout the book, where the author answers commonly encountered problems. I discovered many answers to things I had been wondering about, while just thumbing through this book! I am really glad I bought this book on impulse, I think I made a wise choice.

Another thing that impresses me - the special website for users of this book, ps6.com. (Any Photoshop user can access most of the site, though.) It has the sample files you'll want to use when going through some of the book's step-by-step tutorials. (No need for a bundled CD, the sample files are on the site! You will need a password that is found in the book to get to the images, though.) I really was impressed that the author took the trouble to have a special site for this book's readers. The author seems committed to his readers, and in providing a helpful, comprehensive and informative book.

HIdden Power of Photoshop Elemsnts 2
Although there is useful information in this book, there were times when I just could not follow the instructions and even found some that were not complete, there were missing steps. Other times I found that there were no examples for what the author was talking about and I was left in the dark. I keep trying, but I always end up with a headache trying to figure out what the author is talking about.

The Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements
This book is well worth the money for the "Hidden Tools" alone. I consider myself an intermediate user of Photoshop Elements. I have been tempted lately to buy the full-blown Photoshop to gain the additional capabilities. This book and CD gave me most of the additional tools that I thought I was missing.

The book is not written for beginners. You should have a good understanding of how to use Photoshop Elements before diving into this book. Given the scope of this book, I found the first chapter to be a little too basic. I initially found parts of chapter 2 a little confusing. I never use gradient maps and found the explanation in the book to be somewhat confusing. I went back to my "Photoshop for Dummies" book and re-read the portion on gradient maps. This made the light go on for me on what the author was saying in Chapter 2. I found chapters 3, 4 and 5 the most useful. These chapters dealt with the type of image clean-up I encounter most often. These chapters dealt with curves, which I knew was a feature I missed in Photoshop Elements. Chapter 5 showed some great uses of the History Brush, another missing tool from Photoshop Elements that you get on the CD in the Hidden Tools. The remainder of the book gave some good hints on how to improve your images as well.

I read the whole book, but I am sure that not all was absorbed. I will keep this book close to my computer to use as a reference as I try to fix those difficult to correct images.

The author of the book has made himself available to answer questions on several Photoshop Elements and retouching forums. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to go beyond the basics of what is available in Photoshop Elements.

Excellent
I am a rank beginner to Photoshop Elements and photo enhancement. When I first started reading it, I was nearly scared off, as I didn't know what he was talking about most of the time. However, as he kept saying he would explain this later, I trusted that he would and so far I haven't been disappointed. I am in the process of working my way through the book and am learning more than I could imagine. I sometimes have to go through a lesson a few times to get it, but eventually if I follow the instructions closely, I figure it out. If there is something I can't figure out, there is a website... where one can get more information and ask questions. I am fully satisfied that I've gotten my money's worth with this book and the accompanying CD and would recommend it to anyone.

The Future of Modern Music: A Vibrant New Modernism in Music for the Future
Published in Paperback by American Book Publishing (2002)
Authors: James McHard, Lorna Lynch, and Richard Dziendzielowski
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

insightful; cursory at times philosophically
The Future of Modern Music (TFMM) highlights the tradition and changing role of modernity in classical music of the 20th century. As a student participant of the 2001 summer CCMIX program ... I firsthand gained from the pedagogy founded on sound based composition which is the focus of both CCMIX and McHard's book. ....

I categorize TFMM as a book that attempts to place the compositional modernity of the last century into a hyper modern role in the present. By hyper modernity I posit that TFMM supports the Western assumption that the detached theoretical viewpoint is superior to the involved practical viewpoint. Nevertheless, TFMM succeeds in relating the important transitions that classical music has made in the 20th century and is a worthy book to read especially for the classical listener who is not familiar with the advances of composition in this past century.

Impressive and useful information on Photoshop 5
This is a wonderful how-to book on Photoshop 5. Many times, I've picked up books that promise help, but then do more to confuse. This book, however, is done extremely well. The organization of the presented material is the best I've seen in computer how-to books. Advanced Photoshop techniques are explained in a step-by-step format that actually makes sense! And the illustrative photos enhance the various techniques discussed. All in all, I would seriously recommend this book to anyone that works with Photoshop -- you'll find yourself referring to it time and time again.

Wow! Techniques I've never seen!
I thought I'd read every book on Photoshop. When I saw this in the store I found things I'd never seen in a Photoshop book before. When I brought it home I became even more amazed. I love this book.

The Most Complete Photoshop Book I've Seen
I've grown leary buying computer books because they may be over 500 pages long and end up being repetative and not very helpful. This book, however, has restored my faith. Everything and I do mean EVERYTHING is covered. Not only is it complete, but the format makes the information easy to digest and, more importantly, to USE. Bravo, Mr. Lynch and thank you!

nice book for beginners
"Over 40 fun, easy tricks anyone can do!" That's what it says on the cover and thats what this book is about. 42 of the most basic effects. For instance, how to simulate and earthquake: Shake your camcorder and parts of your set.

I was really disappointed. If you consider applying make-up a special effect then you won't be. This would probably be a good book for kids.

The XatriX way of viewing this book.
Well, I was amazed to see that the special effects section of this book was very helpful. This is definitely a book I would actually pay for, considering I work for a book distribution company.

The format of the book was incredible! The sections were each displayed very descriptively, while most how-to books I read are poorly descriptive.

An unimportant comment of this book is that it is too short. You fail to learn all of the basic concepts of digital recording.

This book deserves a 5-star remark, but I would feel much more comfortable giving this book only 4-stars. I felt it could be longer and contain more concepts of digital recording.

I just want to say another thing on behalf of my new company, Titanium Skate Co. We would like to inform all of the skaters that our products will begin the manufacturing process in August.
