unoriginal and uninteresting recipes
The recipes in this book aren't terrible, but there are so many other "healthy" cookbooks out there that are far better and more original -- try any of Don Mauer's cookbooks, for example, or if you care about exchanges, I have a recent Weight Watchers cookbook that is far more interesting than this one. Moreover, I was disappointed that a cookbook with the word "healthy" in the title would include recipes that call for ingredients such as nutrasweet and diet Mountain Dew. And the fact that many of the recipes call for brand name ingredients without any explanation makes me suspcious, too. On the whole, this just isn't a cookbook I'm interested in coming back to, and it will not be getting a permanent spot on the shelf in my kitchen.

Great for those on Weight Watchers
My husband bought me this for Valentine's Day. I love it! I recently started Weight Watchers and there isn't a single recipe in this book that is more than 7 points per serving. (That is better than the cookbook that I bought at Weight Watchers!) I have made four of the recipes so far and they have been fantastic. Some people may need to "tweek" some of the recipes to suit their tastes, (Crab cakes need a little garlic salt,etc.). But hey, I do that with all of my cookbooks anyway. Its really nice to have some choices when it comes to eating healthier! I intend to take a look at some of this author's other cookbooks

Great book for low fat cooking
This looks to be a great book for low fat cooking, unfortunately my husband is diabetic and it is not really suitable for low carb cooking. We received it as a gift.

Disservice to cancer patients
Tis book is merely a repackaging of the authors previous books and is a disservice to cancer patients. It is designed for losing weight, not a common problem among cancer patients. The introduction blithely states that the cancer patient may want to substitute high calorie items for the low calorie ones used. The recipes are for four to six servings, something cancer patients do not need. It is "recommended" to freeze the remaining servings for future use. However, at that rate the freezer will be filled within a few days with leftovers.

More importantly, there appears to be little to no basis for the recipes chosen. There is nothing in the introduction or the recipes explaining why these recipes would be good for cancer patients. Nor do I see they particularly would be. The recipes appear to have no particular basis for helping either patients undergoing cancer treatment, trying to recover from cancer, or trying to prevent cancer.

I would recommend avoiding this book. If you want a good book on this subject, go to a true cancer recovery book, written by an expert and with full explanations of why things will or will not help you, Daniel Nixon's "The Cancer Recovery Eating Plan: The Right Foods to Help Fuel Your Recovery."

Healthy recipes for everyone, including people with cancer
Make no mistake about it--this is a COOKBOOK, not a diet book. And none of the recipes are repeated from earlier books!

JoAnna Lund's recipe books are wonderful for eating healthy, whether your goal is losing weight, lowering cholesterol, or recovering from cancer or other medical conditions. All of her recipes can be enjoyed by all members of the family, not just the person recovering from cancer. (For the previous reviewer to say that cancer patients don't need recipes that serve 4-6 people is ridiculous and even offensive! Cancer patients are family members, and JoAnna's easy, tasty recipes make it possible for all members of the family to eat together. They're even easy enough for most teenagers to make if Mom or Dad aren't feeling well one evening.)

I own most of JoAnna's cookbooks and have used them primarily to lose weight and get healthy. The front section of all of her books contains information to be used if weight loss is your goal, or ignored if you're simply looking for healthy, easy, dishes to tempt a recovering patient back to the table. Each recipe also contains diabetic exchanges for anyone who needs that information. (If you're not diabetic, you just ignore it.)

The heart of this book is the FOOD--please don't lose sight of that. Yes, the introduction is from a top cancer educator and provides some valuable insights if you're coping with that disease. But the recipes are for EVERYONE, and they're delicious.

Another homerun from the Lady from Iowa
I have been a subscriber to JoAnna Lunds newsletter every since it began publishing. I have all of her books, but this one strikes a chord close to my heart. As a volunteer with Hospice I know up front how important nutrition is with people undergoing treatment of any kind for cancer. JoAnna takes that into consideration and makes everyday "comfort food" have the most nutrition possible while not breaking your bank account. I have used this cookbook as a helper of sorts to families who are caregivers so they can sit down together as a family and eat the same dishes the patient does. If you only buy one of JoAnna's cookbooks (who can stop at one? They are all great!) please buy this one, everyone in the world today seems to have someone they love or that they work with or a neighbor or someone they go to church with that has had cancer in their family or just want to take better care to better of theirselves, this is the book for that.

Helpful...but pretty boring
OK - has basic meals...nothing too fancy or adventurous. I bought this new months ago and have yet to cook something from it...just too boring to bother with.

I'm not a fan of soupy, goopy, skillet food...and there appears to be lots of that in here.

Good if you like to buy lots of pre-fab foods
It would seem that the "man" Ms. Lund has in mind is a down-home man with a hearty appetite that doesn't mind a culinary repetoire that's heavy on pudding and casserole/skillet dishes made from canned soup. Convenient? Yes. Tasty? Yes, but in a plasticy, fake sort of way.

I imagined that Ms. Lund's book would be filled with healthy comfort food. If your notion of "healthy" is highly-refined low-fat pre-fab foods (canned soups, mixes, notoriously high in sugar abd salt) this book is for you. Although this is certainly better than a full-fat diet, I don't think it's a nutritionist's dream.

The food is good for picky eaters, like unadventurous grown-ups and picky kids. It's all very familiar and doesn't have any funny-sounding stuff or weird vegetables in it. Recipes such as Turkey Tetrazini are serviceable and edible. Desserts are perfectly inoffensive as well, although there seems to be a lot of pudding mixes involved.

Ms. Lund includes a diet system which assigns points to different sorts of foods. You are allotted a certain number of point of each type per day. The system is relatively simple, if a bit of a pain to keep up with.

This book would be a good fit for a cook with very little time and a very picky group to feed. However, as a person who does not enjoy too much pre-fab food and prizes fresh, whole foods, this book was not for me.

Fat out of your diet with food that taste good.
I am a man who has many health conditions--heart problem and diabetic--that require me to reduce the fat in my diet. I have tried all sorts of diets and fads that have come along to assist me. None have worked in the long term. Most are two difficult and time consumming to prepare with portion control that is not suitable to satisfy a man. The recipes in this book are easy to prepare and use the things right off the grocery store shelf. They are satisfying and I don't crave fat things. Ms. Lund states in her book that the preparation of the meal should not take longer than it does to eat it. I could not agree more.

I am a walking testament that the simple to prepare and tasty recipes in this book--especially the desserts--greatly reduce the fat in your diet. A side affect of Ms. Lund's recipes is that reducing the fat is causing me to lose weight without having to eat portions that will only satisfy a mouse. I recommend her book highly.

Is this healthy?
I agree with some of the other reviewers. Joanna Lund's books do not contain healthy recipes, they are full of processed foods. The fat content may be low, but what about the sodium, sugar, and carbohydrate count. There are many other excellent crockpot cookbooks out there, that use real food.

Extremely disappointing
I purchased this book expecting to find healthy recipes for crockpot cooking. If your definition of "healthy" consists of using processed foods, such as canned soups and processed cheese, than this book is for you. Personally, I prefer recipes that consist of real, whole foods that are nutritious and simple to prepare. I ended up donating this book to my local library. Maybe someone else will find a use for it. Yuck!

Eating healthy does not need to mean rice cakes forever!
After my husband had a heart attack four months ago, it became my job to redirect our family eating habits. Because I knew I had to have good tasting food for this to succeed, I began the hunt for new recipes. During the "education" phase of my husband's cardiac rehab program, we were introduced to the cookbooks of Joanna Lund. I noticed the ingredients were ones I already had in my kitchen. The finished products were facsimilies of things we already liked. I bought the book - tried a few things and when I saw my husband look for seconds - I KNEW this was one of the best buys I had made in four months! Each menu is broken down by calories, fat grams, proteins etc as well as diabetic substitutes. Strongly recommend.
