Compelling story of a place few could even imagine...
This book conveys the words of a young Union soldier who was captured and taken to the Southern prison they called Andersonville. This detailed account taken from the diary of Charles Hopkins tells a story of survival and horror. It makes you imagine trying to survive in a disease riddened prison with barely any food or fresh water. Read this book because it will be one you will never forget

Involving, enlightening, and uplifting--a "must read"!
This first person account provides a wealth of insight into the day-to-day rituals of "life" in one of the most forbidding Civil War prison camps. Throughout his trials, however, Charles Hopkins never loses his faith in humanity and even manages to endure with a sense of humor. His uplifting story bears testimony to the strength of the human spirit under fire. Hopkins' style of writing is descriptive and conversational, and works well with the enlightening information and photos supplied by editors Mr. Styple and Mr. Fitzpatrick. I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in the Civil War and in becoming acquainted with one of its many unsung heroes.

Very helpful for the regular classroom teacher
This book is a useful mix of theory and specific strategies, of reports on current research and examples of best practices. After reading it I think I understand better the dynamics of conflict in the classroom, and I also have some new things to try in crisis situations. It is a huge and ovewhelming book which most teachers would avoid, so I cut it apart into five sections. I handed the sections to teachers, who read them enthusiastically when they would never have tackled the whole book. It can be read like that, in sections, and not necessarily in order. The content is highly recommended but the format must be made teacher friendly!

The best single-source for working with troubled students!
Long and Morse have written and collected a panorama of articles which collectively define the state of the art in aproaches to troubled and troubling students. This book goes beyond the traditonal to the truly insightful interventions which focus holistically on the child or youth and his struggles within systems. Strategies for regular education and special education teachers are clearly described, and a list of resources in areas from sexual abuse to grief are inculuded. The book begins with a collection of short stories from contemporary literature in an intoduction to the reader into the minds and lives of children who are emotionally disturbed. Conflict in the Classroom has been a classic in the field for 30 years, and this 1996 edition is as worthy of the same honor as its fine earlier editions

Coon Tales and Cockle Burs
What an entertaining little book. I got this for my uncle who is an outdoor nut and hasn't read a book in years. He loved it and has gotten copies for most of his hunting buddies. If you have a hunter or fisherman in your family, this is perfect. The stories are short, funny and so much like the whoppers told around the campfire. I seldom run across books written in short-story humor form and this is a type of "hunters" genre all by itself.

"Who's creating a disturbance? I'm a pilot with the Allies!"
A shorter version of this book was published in 1967 as _You'll Flip, Charlie Brown_; it was retitled in 1976 when it was expanded with strips from _The Unsinkable Charlie Brown_. Don't be misled by the title; the WWI flying ace and his endless struggles against the Red Baron are present, but there aren't many of them here. The down-behind-enemy-lines thread with the title quote, of course, *is* here. (How many aces got KP for losing too many Sopwith Camels?) Oddly enough, the 1993 front cover art was of Snoopy as a soldier of the Foreign Legion instead of as the WWI flying ace.

The book has no introduction, afterword, or anything except various strips of the adventures of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and other members of the world's worst Little League team. Cool. The strips include, among other things, Charlie Brown vs. the kite-eating tree; Charlie Brown at the psychiatric help booth when Lucy's assistant (Snoopy) is filling in; Lucy as arm-wrestling champ; Charlie Brown's brief assignment to the school safety patrol. In addition to a lesser-known thread featuring Linus having talked Peppermint Patty into waiting for the Great Pumpkin (the famous one being the one with Sally), some more conventional letters to Santa Claus are thrown in. Some threads with a point (I can't call them *serious*, since they're still funny): Charlie Brown dealing with Sally when she starts lying to her teacher.

And Linus built armies of snowmen long before Calvin and Hobbes thought of it.

For Lovers Of New Jersey's Haunted History
I have almost every one of the author's other books; he's not the best writer in the world, but he's one of the few people out there writing about the ghost and shipwreck legends of the Jersey shore, so I'm thankful! In this book, he writes about pirates, various ghosts and shipwrecks, haunted old houses and inns and even war stories...all taking place in and around Long Beach, New Jersey. If you like this kind of thing and if you get a kick out of reading about New Jersey's history, you'll like this book and the author's other books. All the books have a bit of a home-made look about them, but they're still fun.

The Little German Notebook: A Breakthrough in Early Speaking
Published in Hardcover by Reflective Books (09 April, 1999)
Authors: Charles M. Long and Charles Merlin Long
Amazon base price: $15.95

One can learn enough German in 12 weeks to get by.
For those of you with German on your schedules, this unique book presents a breakthrough technique for learning to speak German quickly. The author, a national think tank consultant, introduces a brand new way of learning languages in only 12 weeks! The interesting aspect of the technique is that it builds upon the language knowledge we already have. Using the technique, a novice can mentally identify up to 3,000 English cognate words and mentally transform them into correct German words --- without a dictionary or memorization.

German grammar in The Little German Notebook has been greatly simplified through a series of innovative techniques, tips and short-cuts. Sentences in early speaking are largely constructed with transformed English words; however, a few key native German words must be learned and added to complete the sentences. Simple tips are also provided for multiplying one's basic vocabulary into many thousands of additional German words.

The 40 beautiful German photos alone are worth getting the book. It could be used as a 12-week introductory course, or as a study aid for accelerating learning, or as a self-teaching tool. I believe that, if I studied diligently for the required 12 weeks, I could learn enough German to get by. The accent, well that's another story. Think anyone would believe I'm from South Germany?

An Excellent Book
The Long Journey is a great book. Barbara Corcoran has created wonderful characters and a suspenseful plotline that all readers will love. The writing is so real that you can feel every single thing that is going on in Laurie's mind throughout the story. Perfect for a cold winter's day in fornt of the fire. :-)

Laurie is 13 years old and lives with her grandfather (her parents died when she was young) in the abandoned mining town of Hawkins Dry Diggins, Montana. Once, the town had been thriving, but when it was discovered that there was no gold in any of the mines, it was quickly abandoned by all except Lauri and her father. Now, you will get to follow Lauri and her horse on an adventure throughout rural Montana that is filled with suspense and excitement. I absolutely loved this book and all of the characters in it. Be sure to read The Long Journey if you can find it. You won't be disappointed!! :-)

Draws upon hundreds of interviews with former POWs
Long Night's Journey Into Day: Prisoners Of War In Hong Kong And Japan, 1941-1945 reveals the plight of Canadian, British, Indian, and Hong Kong POWs captured when Hong Kong fell to the Japanese in December 1941. The grim experiences of American POWs are also represented throughout this seminal military history. Starvation, diphtheria, beriberi, dysentery, tuberculosis, and harsh punitive conditions were endemic among the prisoners. Yet many of the men were able to find ways to improve their bleak existence, sustain their morale, and survive these hostile conditions. Author Charles Roland draws upon hundreds of interviews with former POWs, as well as archival material from around the world to detail and document the extreme conditions that the prisoners were compelled by their captors to endure. Long Night's Journey Into Day is an essential, core title for any serious World War II studies reference collection.

CLark describes small town living along the Big Sandy River which was once the cities life. I think people of all ages would love this heart felt book.

The most helpful book in the subject I've read!
This book is truly useful. Worrying about long term care alternatives for my elderly parents, I found this book to not only have all the answers, but insightful tips and points. The authors are extremely knowledgeable. I have other books by Inlander who I find to be the best friend the health care consumer in America has
