A great book for restaurant operations. All of the recipes work. Also, great for giving service staff information about the varities of fish. I give it out to chefs as a reference book.
Seafood - Simple and Sublime
Sheryl and Mel London have done justice to fish! This is a must have cookbook for every chef. There are especially good sections on how to buy, prepare and cook fish in easy to follow and practical prose.
In addition to the selection and preparation of the ocean's bounty the book contains superb recipes for a simple meal - or an extravagant seafood feast. Favorites I have from the book include Cacciucco Alla Livornese, a spicy fish stew derived from an old Turkish recipe and Sauteed scallops with Ginger, red pepper and chives.
An excellent resource and a must have for every modern home cook.

The best bean & grain cookbook in existence.
I pulled this one out of the library and then spent the next year and a half looking for it in all the used bookstores around. It is a great cookbook in general, and full of great recipes. The tea-poached plums with vanilla barley pudding is one my favorites. Definitely one of my most used cookbooks.
Informative and Useful
I took this book out of the library on a whim, but what I saw of it in the 3 weeks of the loan period persuaded me to buy it. It is chock full of information, both historical and uses, on pretty much any grain or bean I've ever heard of - and many that I haven't. It has a very well set out table for every grain and bean giving basic cooking instructions that I found very helpful, and it also contains a number of interesting recipes. Unfortunately, it is out of print, so I'm now hoping someone can find a copy for me!

Great book!
My mother gave me a copy of this book, & it has become my bread bible. I've made many recipes from this book, & they've all been good. All recipes use natural ingredients, which for me is very important. If you can only afford to buy one bread cookbook, you should buy this one. It's great!

You can bake your own bread!
I bought this book in 1982 and still use it today. It is excellent to learn how to make bread easily. Very informative about grains and flours. Mel London "talks" you into not being afraid to try yeast bread baking. This is much more than an ordinary recipe book and one of my very favorites.

Excellent!
This is a must have reference book for all cooks. It will not teach you how to cook, but for amatuer, budding, or professional cooks, it provides valuable information that you may not have thought about, or long ago forgot. I didn't understand the title until I opened the book, then it was like cleaning out the garage and finding old forgotten treasures! I rank it with "The Joy of Cooking" and LaRousse's "Gastonimique".

ridicuolously slanted polemic against parts of london
The Rough guide to london is the most biased guide book i have ever read. I really don't understand why one would put a political bias in a guide book - but Rob Humphreys seems obsessed with both bashing the Rich and the British Conservative party a as well as gossipping about peoples sex lives. Such things have no place in a guide book. I would suggest you look at the Lonely Planet Guide which is much much better.
Very thorough and comprehensive but also very long.
Rough guides, in general, are the BEST. However, I feel that although this book would be extremely useful for someone moving to London or currently living in London who wants to get to know it in EXTREME depth, it is WAY WAY WAY too long (672 pages) for the casual visitor who may be spending just a few days there. It would take you more time to go through the book (even just skimming) than doing the actual sightseeing itself. You are better off getting the RG to England or Britain, both of which have very extensive information on London but information which can be digested on a short visit. The London guide is simply too long for a book on just ONE city - even if that city is London.

A very readable in-depth guide.
I visited London for the first time in March 2000. I selected this guidebook based on favorable experiences with other books from this series. London is a huge, complex city that can overwhelm a first time traveller. This book made it very easy to to find my way around. I don't expect any travel book to be completely accurate in describing accomodations, restaurants and other commercial venues in a fast-changing urban environment. However, I found this one to be right about 98% percent of the time.
Some nice features of this book were detailed sections on activities for children, and better than average information for gay/lesbian and disabled travellers. Another real bonus is the suggested reading section at the back of the book. I found some very worthwhile books there that I have been reading as background for my next London trip.
