Did you ever read about some crime in the local paper and wonder what sort of creep would do such a thing? ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE goes a long way towards answering that question. During an interview on National Public Radio the author, Eddie Little, implied that his story is autobiographical. If this is so he had a life you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Thankfully Mr. Little avoids self-pity and the result is an amazingly good story. I think you should read ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE. In fact I urge you to do so, if for no other rea- son than to learn what kind of jerks you may be rubbing shoulders with the next time you're in a crowd. It's scary! Note: I'd have rated it higher but I can't seem to shake this prejudice I have against criminals. GOOD JOB!

There are certain books you can pass along to friends and loved ones with high marks, and, then, there are books you give very high marks to, but choose not to pass them along.

Your aunt Maude would probably not understand this fantastic novel at all. Your mother would wonder why the hell you loved it so much. You would feel frustrated to defend your preferences, and, so, it may be easier to keep it in your bookcase and only offer it, if at all, to persons evaluated to be of the nature to appreciate a literary genius.

This is potent material. As a nurse working in emergency medicine and in forensics, I search for an understanding of such pathology. Aside from a gripping novel, I can not escape the impact of such revelations by the author. He opened more than his soul to expose this kind of wound on paper.

If you want to know what to expect when you are completely addicted to your drug of choice, go to page 226, paragraph 11. There, in full blown absolute reality, is the truth. Only someone intimate with the issue could tell it straight. Eddie spent some very difficult nights and days in order to elucidate the hell he went through. The gift for all users is to be good enough to translate the truth into words that the most unyielding addict will pay attention to.
In an extraordinary novel, Eddie has done just that.

For me, the setting of Another Day in Paradise, the life on the fringe, the dope, and the violence, though important to anchor and carry the novel, were simply a vehicle for the raw, unfiltered emotions and actions of people who continue to live only because they have nothing to lose. The characters had been stripped down by what they lost, or never gained, to the point of utterly basic humanity. A bit more peeled from their personas would have left them human but lacking the subtle difference that distinguished them from completely mindless killers. The novel makes a good case, not excuses, for the decisions of these survivors of unimaginable, emotion-killing pain to live not as innocent, but nonetheless honest, animals. After all, animals aren't mean, they do what is necessary to survive. No more, no less. In a world where the stakes for minor failure are life and death, it follows that the characters would be fools if they were not severe enough to have a reasonable chance at success. Not pretty, not desireable, but theirs is a brutality executed with nearly flawless logic. The novel had one of the best, plain-spoken explanations of the stupidity of racism I have ever read. The imagery of the novel was biting and realistic. If you liked this book, read You Just Can't Win by Jack Black.

My 1 year old son really loves this book. We've read it so many times that I know the story by heart. The pictures are bold and bright. My son likes to turn the pages himeself. It's got a great rhyming text. And the words of the items that Eddie packs repeat, which is great for learning to read and identifying objects in the pictures!

"Steel Toes" rocks. This sequel to "Another Day in Paradise" starts off with Bobby Prine, dopefeind and convicted felon, surviving a race riot and escaping a gladiator camp in Indiana (circa 1975). Bobby hits the road in a hemi cuda, along with a couple new crime partners and gets back to business - drugs, sex, violence and crime. This book spans from prison, to an Indiana militia compound, to New York's nightlife, to Boston's criminal underworld. Told from Bad Bobby's POV - brutal, funny, scared, hard on himself and others, Bobby pulls no punches. One of the best scenes is when a college chick that Bobby is falling for takes him to the ballet - and he actually digs it. This ain't no cheesy crime fiction, this recurring character moves, sounds and acts like a bonafide life born-to-lose anti-hero. I'm sure major chunks of prose and most of the cast hail from Eddie Little's real life experiences - They're too good not to have. I'm hoping for a third installment of Bad Bobby, like Vachss's Burke, this is one character I could follow for volumes.

This sequel opens with Bobby, now 18 years old, having failed at escaping from a gladiator camp in the midwest. But Bobby's got heart, he won't give up. He fights his way through a race riot and finally scales the walls with a couple homeboys. Bobby and his boys hit the road in a souped-up Hemi Cuda and from then on the story is non-stop action. Bobby goes from an Indiana militia compound, to hanging with junkbond salesman in New York, to the criminal underworld of Boston. He hooks up with Syd and Billy Bones, two great characters from his first novel, and gets back to business. Cashing bogus checks, doing burglaries, packing heat, shooting dope and falling in love. Eddie Little has done it again, writing a crime novel that is not only entertaining, but deep. The characters and description is great, you can tell Eddie Little has tread the rough ground of which he writes. Bad Bobby Prine is better than any "recurring" character I've ever followed in other crime novels. I'm waiting for a 3rd installment, this dude keeps you on edge, I could follow bad Bobby for volumes.

No kidding, Eddie's first [Another Day in Paradise] is fantastic. Having said that, I think his latest is even better. The voice is more refined, where it's still all tough, but with more focus. And I found a lot more hope in this one. Rock on, Eddie!

I had only read Edward Bunker's 1st novel before I was arrested for armed robbery and I had this book sent in to me when I was in Snohomish County Jail awaiting sentencing and it gave me a strange courage when I read it. Edward Bunker is the real deal.
Nobody can touch him in terms of understandng and experience. Prison is like war; you can never understand it unless you've experienced it firsthand.Most people will never have to endure what Eddie Bunker(and me) have had to endure but because Bunker is so talented, they can get a little taste by picking up any one of his books; I've read them all and they're uniformly awesome. Edward Bunker is my hero. My first book STONE HOTEL was strongly influenced by him. I think he's the greatest.

I have read all of Bunkers books and love this one . A story of a boy and the cycle of life of crime trouble depression... if youve been there you know already. So there is hope out there a way out of the darkness.. Read all his books.. real gritty gangsta ..

All I can say is that "Little Boy Blue" is a blueprint for how a troubled boy can be transformed into an adult sociopath. Ironically, the system that is supposed to reform him is the culprit in pushing him toward further hopelessness and delinquency. Alex Hammond is basically a good kid with good instincts who is battered by authority until he lashes out and becomes submerged in hatred. There are many instances when he can choose between obedience and rebellion, and even though he inevitably decides to rebel, he often seems to have little choice. Frustration with a dictatorship of adults who have little patience or tolerance for the special needs of this disturbed boy sends him hurtling on a collision course with tragedy. Especially troubling is the scene where Alex is placed with relatives who are inflexible in their method of discipline--he seems to be making slight progress when a fabricated lie shoves him back down the mudslide. Here Alex actually shows a hint of conscience--or has he simply gained dominance over the aggressor? The harrowing course of his life is told in uncompromising, brutally-honest terms. Every professional involved in rehabilitating children should own a copy of this book. It chronicles the downfall of innocence, introducing a doomed child whose life is always threatened by an undercurrent of depression.
