Is a picture really worth a thousand words?
This is an amazing compilation of tribal tattoos from around the world and throughout time. True to its name it features tribal designs, not the neo-tribal tattoos that have come popular today.

I found the pictures to be great as I was looking to find out more about tribal designs from many cultures. I was served well with pictures, but not so well with explanations of what the tattoo was, what it meant, which class would wear it in society, how it was applied, the history behind the tradition, etc.

I am using the book as a reference and find that it only becomes great with supporting articles. I had done extensive reading on tribal traditions from around the world and found that this book served well as a companion to these and other articles, but not as a stand alone book. Without the history behind the pictures, you loose the whole meaning.

I strongly recommed this book, be it as a source book or simply for a tattoo enthusiaste. However, I would urge everyone to supplement this book with further readings on the matter.

Let's get tribal
I thoughly enjoyed this book, as it contains numerous serious
tribal body art designs. My only quibble is that the illustrat-
ions and pages were very small, and it was sometimes hard to pick
out the designs, especially on the Scythians. If only it were
larger in pagination, and illustration!

An Excellent Cross-Cultural Reference of Tattoos
This is an excellent book for those looking for indigenous art and original "root" design. It addresses body art from a large spectrum of social groups and all continents. The illustrations are very clear and detailed, and it is well organized to allow you to follow the evolution of a design as it jumps from country to country, culture to culture. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to find a particular tattoo design, either for personal use or simple research.

windows 98 simplified
Sorry about the harsh #1, but I have just started to work my way through this book and have run into a problem. I am not sure if the error is yours or mirosofts. Page 20 SHOW DESK TOP. When I press the small icon to minimize all open windows, not only do the windows disappear, but so doe's th task bar. That leaves me with no way to re- display them later. I still intend to keep working my way through the rest of the book as I do like the layout. I do hope somebody in your company will take time out to answer this. By the way I am 69 and new to the computer world, and am really keen on teaching myself as much as possible about it. Hope to get a reply from you shortly Thank you. Tony

"Outstanding Master Visual"
I'm a "Total Newbee" in the World of Computers. "Master Windows 98 Visually" is by far the most, "Cut To The Chase", and makes you understand exactly what you're reading and best by far, what you're learning. You cannot read this book and "NOT" learn and understand. "Master Windows 98 Visually", blows the others out of the water. I got so frustrated and was going broke investing in hope, when I came across this book. For a beginner as well as advanced I recommend this book. I've had the pleasure of teaching my instructor and class mates a few things. I'm looking forward to purchasing additional books by this author and I'm giving my friend a copy as a gift, she's had a computer for 3 years, and she's coming to me for answers to her problems.

Thank goodness for MaranGraphics.

Master Windows 98 Visually really works!
If you can read a cookbook or other simple instruction-type books, this is great. I learned so much about options that I didn't even know I had available. It is clear, concise and with all the illustrations, even a complete novice can start to use it immediately. I've been able to organize my files, manage disk space, customize my computer and customize my menus with what I need. I'm no longer stuck with things I don't need or understand. This was one of the best purchases I ever made. It's incredibly easy to understand and instructions are super easy to follow - everything is illustrated for you.

A rather painful experience
Some people like Tanenbaum's writing style. Other people find his work tedious and boring.

I belong to the latter group.

Most of the book is just waffle... he explains neither the general principles nor the implementation specifics in great detail, but instead spends 10 pages explaining the obvious, follows that with a page with good technical information, then a page of insightful commentary, but then continues again with another 10 pages of pointless chatter.

Some chapters provide practical information, but it is clearly aimed at the university student -- and has all the excitement of a monotonous lecturer.

If you're after a to-the-point summary, try something else.

You must be a serious student to finish this book
I acquired this book after reading Tanenbaum's excellent "Modern Operating Systems, 2nd ed." While I enjoyed that book, I couldn't finish "Distributed Systems: Principles and Paradigms." Those without a programming background and a serious need to learn distributed design principles won't finish either.

"Distributed Systems" doesn't engage the reader as "Modern Operating Systems" does. While important topics like communication, processes, naming, synchronization, etc. are given full chapter coverage, discussion within some chapters fall short. For example, why introduce the concept of "little" and "big endian" on pages 74 and 75, but not adequately explain what those terms mean?

My favorite aspects of "Distributed Systems" were the chapter summaries. I could almost have had my interests satisfied by reading these concise descriptions of key computing ideas. If you don't need this book in the classroom, you'll probably be happy reading the summaries, too.

Great book, but poor choice of cover art
Chapters 1 through 4 are a great introduction to Distributed Systems, in the case you have had less than optimal training on the subject in the past - I read these chapters at the beginning of a recent Distributed Systems graduate course since this was the situation I was in. Chapters 5 through 7, which were the main concentration in the course, are also the heart of the text: Synchronization, Consistency and Replication, and Fault Tolerance. The authors write very well, and the diagrams are among the best I have seen, especially if you think visually like me. In my opinion, some of the explanations are drawn out a bit much, or worded in a strange way, but this does not take away from the text's substance. What does subtract from my high opinion of the book is the cover art, which makes it look like a book one would read in grade school. At least one professor in the graduate school I am attending is not interested in using the text for his DS courses for that very reason.

Gripping and stays with you
This book is about a murder. But it's a lot more than that. This book makes you challenge beliefs, think deeper, and stays with you long after you've gone through the last chapter. The characters are interesting. I especially liked the mysterious lab, and the secrets in its glass containers.
Worth reading!

Great book but confusing situations
This is a great book. It helps you understand the troubles and hardships the people of South America go through times of fighting and war. I also liked the way the author used many adjectives to help you picture the setting and sorroundings. My only dislike was the confusing situations. At some points I had to reread a page to actually understand the situation. Another thing I liked was that I felt like I was actually growing with the main character through his teens and becoming a man.

Interesting Projects, Comprehensive but Not In Depth
This book is a comprehensive monogrpah of the renowed dutch architectural practice. Starting from single houses in the early years to the recent XL projects such as high rise office building and airport, most of the major projects are covered. Some of the photographs are very interesting as the photographers play around with reflection on glass, local people (e.g. cleaners on maintenance walkway, yuppies on motocycles), etc. in the architectural shoots, which are very rare in the architectural publication. However, due to the large no. of projects and large sized photographs (each of which usally take up one page, if not two), the selection of drawings and photographs are very limited, not to metion the architectural detailing of the projects which are very appealing. For example, there are few photos and drawings for the very interesting high-rise office building which was built over a running highway. The coverage on the airport complex project is also very limited. When compared to the recent monograph publication on dutch architects, e.g. MOVE of Ban van Berkel, SMLXL of OMA, etc., the coverage of projects, touch with the architect as well as graphic design of this book are relatively not appealing.

Consequently, as a mongraph of Benthem Crouwel, it is a valuable publication waited for long time.

Buy Frommers or Fodors instead
I was very disappointed with this guide book. I've bought a lot of guidebooks and have never seen one as general as this one. The information contained in Fodors or Frommers big Carribean books give better coverage to St. Kitts which is what I was interested in learning about.

Search the web instead
I read the review that said this book was worthless and chose to ignore it - mistake! You can definitely find all of this information, plus a whole lot more, via the few websites and message boards about Anguilla. Buy a book to read on your trip instead!

Helpful Guide
I have found this book to be an informative helpful guide about some of the Carribean islands which little seems to be written.

It is particularly useful for someone, like myself, who is ready to explore the Carribean beyond their own favorite island, in my case - St. John.

I am finding it to be a great resource tool.

A minor fault - I wish it had more colored pictures.
